What I Learned in October

Newborn Photographer Raleigh

“It’s daring to be curious about the unknown, to dream big dreams, to live outside prescribed boxes, to take risks, and above all, daring to investigate the way we live until we discover the deepest treasured purpose of why we are here.”

So much has me thinking lately…One of my favorite things about October has been our annual fall break trip. And though we don’t go far, it reminded me this year of my favorite book when I was a teenager, and still a favorite, I Married Adventure. I could fill up this post with the entire book (so just read it!) but maybe I’ll only add a few quotes here and there. I love adventures with my kids, no matter how simple they may be. I think I’d rather go on 100 adventures than buy new clothes or shoes, or what not. The memories are precious to me. What I was reminded of in October was how much I love these adventures with them, how I also want to foster a love of adventure in them, too. (And fall is perfect for so many adventures – apple picking, pumpkin patch, the mountains, and many more!)

Tin Roof Teas. Thanks to my friend Brooke who took me to a tea tasting, Harrison is now addicted to their organic vanilla honey (which he eats on his pancakesevery single morning) My children love to eat, and every night Harrison gets so excited to talk about pancakes in the morning. (P.S. pancakes take like one minute to cook – super easy! wooohoooo!) Tin roof teas also has an amazing tea selection – we went to a tea tasting which was super fun. Oh, and their honey is raw and unfiltered.

The best time to go to Hill Ridge Farms is on a weekday during the fair week! The boys went down the big slide to their heart’s content. So much fun to do there without waiting in the long lines that can happen on the weekend.

My favorite pumpkin patch hands down is Farmer Ganyard at Upchurch Farms. I absolutely love that my boys can pick a pumpkin right off the vine – what a great experience. I know it’s a lot of work for them to grow the pumpkins, and I’m really thankful such an awesome place is in the Raleigh area. They also have a super cool corn maze, which is not overwhelming so it’s manageable to find your way out. There’s also some fun things for the kids to play in, (you have to jump in corn at the pumpkin patch, right?) some bunnies, ponies, and goats, and several mazes for the little ones. It was truly an adventure hiking to the field to find our perfect pumpkins right off the vine.

“A life of adventure is ours for the taking, whether we’re seven or seventy. Life for the most part is what me make it. We have been given a responsibility to live it fully, joyfully, completely, and richly, in whatever span of time God grants us on this earth.”
 -Luci Swindoll

I have been reading and loving The Lifegiving Tableso much. (Anyone else reading it with me?) I think my boys have definitely loved all the new recipes I’ve been trying, and I’ve been so encouraged about teaching so many discussion and listening skills during meals. I have also loved The Lifegiving Homeso so much, so I knew I’d love this one, too. (The workbooks that go with both are so worth it, too!) It just changes your perspective so much from worrying about being a Pinterest mom, but encouraging in how you can make a difference in your children’s lives. There’s balance, too, like who doesn’t love the Life Giving Table’s chapter on snack meals. Yesssssssss.

This will be part of my November goals but there are so many projects that have been on my heart lately. (One for a full year. I just need to do it) so this has got to be the month that I start some of them.

This has got to be my favorite time of year..so much to celebrate + I love celebrating,

KACHOW!

Halloween Lightning McQueen Photographer

Special Thanks to Wake County Speedway

I wish I could have taken a video of Harrison when we drove up. (You know, I couldn’t since I was driving) It was like his Disney World, he was so excited. Since the spring, he has been the biggest Lightning McQueen race car fan. We were out at dinner at the beach this summer, and he saw a race on tv and was just mesmerized. It was only appropriate that when he finally had a birthday party..(well, he had a 1/2 birthday party this summer since he was born on 12/25) Well, it had to be a Cars 3 party. And it’s been everything Lightning McQueen ever since. We have cars kind of everywhere, and he just loves playing cars. One night I caught him filling up his bed with cars before he went to sleep. His love of cars is absolutely precious. (If you’re wondering why Owen is not in the Halloween pictures this year, he decided that he didn’t want to participate in Halloween. He said he doesn’t like seeing people dressed up as witches and scary stuff + would rather not participate. He has decided he may go to a church trunk or treat this weekend) I did get a few of the boys together, and Owen helped me take these, but he chose not to participate. This was so much fun – he sang songs from SING the whole time, and huge thanks toWake County Speedway for letting us come and photograph the racetrack.

The Airstream

Raleigh Family Christmas Mini Session Photographer

Oh, Darling, Let’s Be Adventurers…

It is always fun to dream up a creative family shoot for clients, and this one was just so much fun. I’m not a huge camping fan, so this was the best way to camp, ha! (not camp….) I did work at a wilderness camp in 2003 and spent my summer in the woods, even hiked the Appalachian Trail. It was a stretch for me, but I survived. We did a lot of camping with my church youth group growing up. One time, I was in a tent with a friend or two, and it started pouring so badly, there was water everywhere and the tent just slid down the hill into the lake (with us in it). On another camping trip, and a friend and I gave up and slept in my brother’s explorer? expedition?…it was big. The rain was just soaking through our tent like crazy and we were soaked. I have had terrible snake encounters outside – not bit, thank goodness, but I did step on one a few minutes into a hike. Another one surprised jumped out at me from a rock. (And completely weird that in all the tall grass, etc. that I’m in for sessions, I haven’t seen a snake during a photo session yet) I probably shouldn’t have said that because, you know, now I’m going to see one. Ok, so I feel like I had to tell you all of this to say, that the airstream is my kind of camping. It was beautiful and even had a shower – pretty cool.

Boyce Farms has been a favorite for so many years, and the owners are just the best. We love, love, love this farm + loved being able to have the minis there again this year. It is the best farm, and the only place to get your Christmas tree!

Ericka and I spent a lot of time discussing + dreaming up this mini, and I cannot wait to show you all of the images. Previews are hard because I don’t want to give the whole thing away so clients are super excited when they see their gallery. Every single session went so well, Ericka tolerated my Christmas music, we sang the Trolls soundtrack, paddington made an appearance + some clients even got to witness Ericka’s amazing dance moves!

From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much to everyone who came! It was truly an adventure + so much fun.

Sun Soaked

Raleigh Babys First Year Photography

All through the year the light changes..what time it rises, what time it sets. The clouds can dictate a lot about what the light will be like at a session. The light the night of their session was just stunning, and perfect for such a sweet evening snuggling their baby girl. It was just so adorable – this little one LOVES her mama’s hair in a top knot. She just giggles! Absolutely adorable.

According to Mom..

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one? Stephen-Native to North Carolina.
Olivia- Liv was born on Cinco de Mayo after 26 hrs of labor! And she looks like her Daddy!
Alecia– I always loved the name Olivia. It was my pseudonym for an occasional latte at Starbucks:)

Does your little one have any favorites? Liv loves when I wear my hair in a top knot and shake it like crazy. She loves taking walks outside, swinging on her front porch swing and her white noise machine.

Tell me about your favorite parts of the session or why you enjoyed the session. The sun setting, the light was beautiful and getting all the shots felt easy and comfortable.

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the shoot + why you chose them. Our outfits were neutral and clean colors to go with our pictures being outside near a field. Stephen’s shirt is my favorite color on him.

Any words of wisdom you have for other moms preparing for a session? Bring toys for your babe, we forgot! Maybe pack them in your diaper bag the day before!

What baby gear has been your favorite during the first year? Portable white noise machine, Womby swaddle, Tula carrier, Little Unicorn muslin swaddles and my Fawn diaper bag/book bag

Little Blue Truck

Raleigh Fall Mini Sessions Photography

“Horn went ‘Beep!’

Engine purred.

Friendliest sounds

You ever heard.”

-from Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle

It’s no secret Ericka and I love planning and creating styled minis for our clients. And I love the simplicity Ericka designed with the apple baskets and flowers. This one was just. so. PRETTY. We were so happy to have beautiful weather both days (yay for no rain!) These just went so smoothly, I think all the little ones just thought the truck was so much fun. The hilarious part was the apples….everyone wanted a snack during the session – ha! And those images are adorable, too! These minis take a lot of work – location scouting, finding private property, getting permission, finding the truck, prop shopping, and in the end, it’s so so worth it! These came together beautifully, and I love the color palette Ericka chose for the flowers. Everything was perfect. So many more to share soon, but super excited to post a preview. For more information on other fall minis – send me an e-mail (becky@rebeccakellerphotography.com) Thanks to everyone who came + made this such a fun weekend!
