The New Baby

North Raleigh Newborn Photographer

It is summer, which means both of my boys are with me during the day, when I’m not working, and also we are spending a lot of time outside. If we aren’t outside or at the pool, chances are we are at the library. I lovvve summer reading and really just reading in general, and my boys definitely have a love of books. We are always scanning the bookshelves, looking up books online and reserving them, talking about books, and well, reading. (When I get a minute…) We drove to Greensboro for Father’s Day and so riding in the car is always an excuse to read, when I don’t have to be driving. (I just finished The Jane Austen Project, it was so so good, especially if you are a Jane Austen fan, kind of a historical fiction kind of book) All that being said, the boys and I are big bookworms..I was thinking about and laughing about the other day, what I wanted to be when I grew up. I have no clue why, but I always wanted to be a writer for the New York Times. My childhood was spent journaling and writing, so writing and being a reporter makes sense..but now I couldn’t even imagine it!  I did also take a lot of photos, and can still remember waiting for film to come back in the mail or an hour at the drug store! I’ll have to tell you all about my experiences in developing film another day..

This sweet summer baby boy was a treat to photograph with his older siblings. (How sweet that they were reading My New Baby and even read Happy Birthday to You!  to their baby brother!) I first met this family in the early days of my business and have been photographing them since their oldest was three months old! I’ll never forget that sweet session in their front yard. We’ve had several sessions over the years in their house just hanging out and playing with their toys which is so much fun! Their baby brother was just loved on so much the day of his portraits, and he even smiled about it a little! So fun when newborns smile!

According to Mom…

What was your favorite part of our session together? The best thing about having a session at home is that everyone is more relaxed and you get pictures that reflect your normal everyday lives. I love the pictures of the siblings in their rooms.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? The nice thing about having the session at home is that the baby was ready to go-nothing extra needed.

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you nervous or worried beforehand? Our experience could not have gone better. Becky is amazing with the kids and is able to get them to relax so the pictures look so natural. This is my favorite part about sessions with Becky.

What would be your advice to someone else having their newborn photographs taken? Look through the blog to get ideas of what you do and do not want for your family pictures. Get your outfits ready before the baby arrives and let Ericka help.

And A High Five at the End

Downtown Raleigh One Year Baby Photography

This little one was full of so many smiles – he just started giggling as soon as he got out of the car at the park. Sometimes babies can be distracted when outside and just fascinated by all the noises and sounds, but not this little one. He was just so happy playing with his Mommy and Daddy at the park. What a cutie he is and so many memories made during his one year portraits. I love the variety we could get at this location and how adorable was he holding up his finger that he was one. We had ot keep an eye on the weather that day, and we were sure if it was going to pour during the session. It was a dark and cloudy evening, but thank goodness, the rain stayed away. For some reason, sometimes when I’m at the park, it’s like we are magnets for rain. This little one was just so adorable, such a fun session…and the high five at the end, sooo cute!

Counting You Twice

Knightdale Wake Forest Raleigh Newborn Photographer

I first met these two at their maternity portraits, and they are just so much fun to be around. They definitely laugh and have so much fun together. And they’ve been through so much, waiting for this baby boy, and just have so much JOY. Their puppy is also so special to them, and I love that we were able to capture her in a few portraits, too! And, wow, their nursery was just amazingly beautiful, even a stunning shiplap wall! This was such a sweet morning photographing this family at home.

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? I cried and was so overjoyed! I was relieved he was here but also praying he was going to be ok as he was a whole month early. I was overjoyed because we waited 3 years for him and we prayed for him every day.

What was your favorite part of our session together? I loved being in the comfort of our own home. It made the session more relaxed but also captured our life in the house we have built together. I loved being able to capture the sweet details of Jack’s nursery as well. And we were also able to have photos with Sassy and capture all of us as a family. My favorite part was having my mom in town and being able to capture some photos of her, Jack and me. I also appreciate your outgoing personality and making us all feel comfortable for the session. AND being patient with us since Jack refused to go to sleep:)

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you nervous or worried beforehand? It was a great experience!! I wasn’t nervous at all and was excited for the session. I also loved chatting with Ericka on what outfits to wear and how we can best look in our photos. It was one less thing I had to worry about. I am absolutely in love with the photos and will cherish them forever!

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? I would say to have them done in your home where you feel comfortable and relaxed. It’s also helpful because if the baby needs to be changed or fed, it’s convenient and not stressful. Pick a photographer that you also feel comfortable with, is patient with babies/children and can help you with positioning and finding the best angles.

Did you have a sentimental item at our session? We used a rainbow blanket I had made for Jack in the session. We suffered 3 losses before having Jack and he is our miracle baby. He is definitely the sunshine and rainbow at the end of the long storm. He is everything to us.

Was there a sentimental item in your nursery that we photographed? I attended a class at AR Workshop in Raleigh and made the sign hanging over Jack’s crib. The sign read ‘When I count my blessings, I count you twice’. I love that you incorporated this sign in a lot of our photos. It is so special.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? Well we haven’t really gone out yet as a family (lol) but I would say enjoying the fresh air, sitting in yard playing with Sassy, grilling out and just relaxing with some music.

Any advice to any other families picking out wardrobe or preparing for a session? I would definitely recommend working with a stylist like Ericka. I love that she was able to use pieces from our wardrobe, so we really didn’t need to spend extra money on clothes. It took the stress out of figuring it out myself and the photos ended up having the look and feel I envisioned.

Worth the Wait

Cary Raleigh NC Newborn Photographer

In his nursery, a sign on the wall reads, “Some things are worth the wait.” How sweet that is, and I love that his Mama said she thought, “He is an amazing gift!” when she first saw him. Little ones truly are a gift, and I love photographing the first days at home with them which pass by so quickly and often in a blur. They also had a schnauzer who loved sunbathing, and I loved capturing that since I grew up with schnauzers, and they are so so sweet. Could this little one be any sweeter? So many sweet images of him snuggling with his Mommy + Daddy!

According to Mom…

What’s the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? He is such an amazing gift!

What was your favorite part of our session together + the best part of having a newborn session at home? I loved that you were so relaxed and patient with us getting organized and when John was fussy. It made me more relaxed about the session. I appreciated being at home since I was still recovering from the C Section and going out to a studio would have been impossible.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? I found some inspiration on Pinterest, and shopped for myself with the tips/ideas from Ericka. Other than that I just showered & did my hair & makeup before you got there!

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you nervous or worried beforehand? I was excited to capture the special time with our new family. It was an easy process – I wasn’t nervous or worried.

It turned out great – I was a little tired and ready to be done at the end, and I think John was too – but I was glad we got the shots that we did at the end, so it was worth it being a little longer.

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? Plan ahead for your outfits and plan on just going with the flow of the baby. Being at home made that really easy.

Did you have a sentimental item at our shoot? We have the afghan my aunt made for John. She makes one for all the new babies in our family so it was really special to get one for our little one.

How would your describe your perfect Saturday as a family? We haven’t gotten to do this yet – but I’d love to push the baby in a stroller at the park near our house and get brunch afterward (at home or La Farm!) Then enjoying some playtime with the baby and maybe a long nap when he naps!

Any advice to other families picking out wardrobe or preparing for family portraits? Get tips/shopping ideas from Ericka! She made it really easy for us – I shopped our closets first too!

Besides that, just give yourself plenty of time to get ready and know that you’re in good hands and the finished product will be well worth the effort. I am so happy to have these adorable shots of John as he’s already changed so much in just a few weeks!

So Many Giggles

One Year Baby Photographer Raleigh

I always feel like I blink after their newborn sessions when they turn one. It’s really, like how can this even be possible? And this little one, we were photographing him close to his bedtime so of course, this session was super quick. With everything going on, and how quick this session was, he still managed to give me so many smiles and giggles. So, so, so cute! What I love about sessions is that it is a time to play and make memories..to have fun together as a family and also capture that in the photos.

We went to see Captain Underpants with friends today, and well, it was everything you dreamed a boys movie could be. (Some theaters have discounts on Tuesdays, which is awesome)It was actually really funny, and I could see how Owen’s age would love it, but also a little much on the potty talk, of course. My girl ears were like ewwwww. Owen has been devouring the chapter books so, of course, I have put every single one on hold at the library in the hopes that one day he will be able to read more. (it is kind of amazing how many girl series books there are vs. boys. Just not that much great stuff. If you have any suggestions for other series, I would love to hear them) I grew up going to the movies a lot..I mean, my Mama loves movies. Since she loved them, of course, I was the kid who never wanted to watch tv or movies. I never watched Saved by the Bell and remember a little bit of Full House, but mostly I would rather be doing something else. Even in college, I never really wanted to sit around and watch movies. It still baffles Michael when something comes on tv, and he’s like remember this? Um no. I owned like 7 dvds in college/after college and I married a man who has oodles and oodles of them. My favorite movies growing up (I can remember all of them because there were so few) were Anne of Green Gables, Never Been Kissed, My Best Friend’s Wedding(i watched this so many times) 10 Things I Hate About You, and The Wedding Singer. There were more, I’m sure, but these are the ones I can remember. Who else has old chick flicks they remember + want to share? Now that I spent so much time sitting on the couch editing for my job, of course I am now watching netflix and movies. Too funny! Michael still can’t believe it some days. Ok, enough of my rambling about Captain Underpants + movies..on to the one year cuteness!
