Sunshine

It’s so wonderful to have a sunshine day for a session. This was right after my dad’s surgery so I was back and forth to Greensboro the day of their session, but was super thankful for a bright sunshiny day. One time, while photographing this same sweet family, at this same park, the thunder and clouds started rolling in during our session, and we were pretty far away from the parking lot.  This is one of those parks that you really want to bring a stroller, we can do a lot of walking.(you know I am not the biggest fan of thunderstorms…like one of my least favorite things ever. I am not the one that is going to be outside on the porch watching storms. I’ll be in the bathroom listening for tornado sirens, ha!) We were pretty far away when it started thundering really badly, and I may have ran to the car a little bit. So I get a little bit happy when the sun is out and no chance of storms are in sight. These images were taken while waiting for their sweet second baby boy, who is now here and I just got to photograph. (their newborn portraits on the blog soon!) And if you didn’t see my facebook post, we are doing some super fun family minis at The Little Herb House this weekend, and we had one spot open up at 6:40 PM. Contact us ASAP before it’s booked!

Vibrant + Fun

Raleigh Family Photographer

We had perfect weather the evening of their session – it was just so beautiful, and such pretty light, too! These two little ones had so much fun running around and exploring with their Mama. Such a vibrant, fun session full of giggles. Loved seeing these three again!

According to Mom…

What kind of feel were you thinking for your session + why did you choose that? I was looking for an Artistic feel based on African culture. I chose this theme because I wanted to do something different with this photo session. I wanted something that would be timeless. I wanted to look at the photos 20 years from now and say “wow, those were some gorgeous outfits!”. What better way to do this than with our African roots. That will most definitely not change.:)

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one. Saige Thornton – My first born. She is 5 years old and she starts Kindergarten in August. She is a people person and is very loving.

Ace Thornton – He is almost 4 years old. He is “mommy’s baby”. He loves bugs, reptiles, etc. Daily, when he speaks the words “look what I found mommy”, makes me tense because there is no telling what he is holding.

What was the weather like the day of your session? It was GORGEOUS! Sunny, Warm, and clear skies.

What was the best part of your session? The best part was having people admire our look and give us compliments during the session.

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session. I chose African print cloths because that is the only way my vision would be fulfilled.
Channie – Boutique Parisienne in Raleigh, NC
Saige – Etsy
Ace – Amazon

What are some words of wisdom you have for other families preparing for a session? Make sure you start planning what to wear early. I had to return a few items because of fit or because I just didn’t like it.

What’s your favorite family weekend activity? We love visiting our grandparents and great-grand parents. We also love going to the beach.

Pretty in Pink

Wake Forest NC Newborn Photographer

Wake Forest Newborn Photographer .jpgP I N this to pinterest

This sweet girl was just so beautiful and decked out in her pink blanket, love it. She loved being photographed and didn’t want to miss a second of the session. Loved seeing her yawn and those dimples! Such a sweetheart! I love newborn sessions at home because a lot of stress is out the window..you have everything you need and there’s no rush. We watched a lot of HGTV while this sweet girl was going to sleep.

According to Mom….

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? I had an unplanned c-section, so I wasn’t able to really see her for over an hour other than a quick glimpse. Hearing her little cry for the first time absolutely the best moment. It took my breath away to know she was ours and finally here. My husband was with her while they were finishing my surgery and in recovery. When they finally met me in recovery, her and her dad looked like best friends already. It’s unreal seeing your baby for the first time, I was instantly in love with her.

What was your favorite part of our session together? The best part is how patient Becky is! Blakely didn’t want to miss out on anything so it took her a while to fall back asleep. Becky tried all the tricks to get her back to sleep and to make sure I got the pictures I wanted. It’s really nice being in the comfort of your own home where we could feed or change her easily if needed.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? Before Becky arrived, I made sure Blakely was fed, changed and just in her diaper wrapped in a blanket.

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous beforehand? We are first time parents and I wanted everything to be perfect. Of course I worried that my newborn wouldn’t behave or that they wouldn’t turn out like I hoped. But, her pictures are amazing! I love the way she captured our daughter’s dimples and the way she can’t stand to have her feet covered up.

What would be your advice to someone having newborn photographs taken? It’s really hard, but try not to stress. Just go with the flow!

Was there a sentimental item in your nursery that we photographed? There’s an American flag on the wall in her nursery that I love. It was a gift for my husband from some of our good friends at our gender reveal party. My husband served four years in the US Marine Corps so it makes the flag in her room even more special. I love that it’s in her nursery and I can’t wait to tell our daughter about her dad’s bravery and service to our country!

Any favorite baby gear so far? I really thought it was overrated, but I love our dock-a-tot pillow. It’s so easy to bring all over the house and travel with. Blakely loves it so it was definitely worth it!

Any other advice to families picking out wardrobe or preparing for a session? Pick comfortable outfits since there’s a lot of posing and positions. Becky makes you look good no matter what you wear though!

Something Sentimental

Raleigh Holly Springs Newborn Photography

Raleigh Holly Springs Newborn Photography 5.jpgP I N this to pinterest

This was such a relaxed session at home, so much sweetness snuggling their baby boy. Babies’ days can be so different, but we happened to catch him on a super chill relaxed sleepy day and were able to capture so many sweet photos. We also were able to photograph a lot of blankets, a quilt and parts of the nursery that were sentimental to his Mama. I love the photos of him on the quilt, such a beautiful quilt, and he is just precious. And you know, I just love llamas, so I had to include the sweet Llama print in their nursery. (Love these llamas so much)

According to Mom…

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? I can’t believe that it is possible to love someone so much at first sight. He is truly perfect. Maybe throwing up four times a day for 8 months (thank goodness he was a month early) was all worth it in the end.

What was the best part of having a newborn session at home? Our baby was much more relaxed at home and it gave the pictures a very personal touch.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? We made sure he had been fed before the shoot so help keep him calmer.

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous beforehand? We thought that the session went great. We were nervous he was be fussy and not cooperate, but he was amazing and slept for most of it. Becky is a good friend and she was great at suggesting poses, etc. and even incorporated our pup into the shots.

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? Relax and take your cues from the baby. We incorporated some sentimental props (blankets, etc) that turned out great and added a personal touch.

Did you have a sentimenal item at our shoot? Yes, we used a blanket made by a great-grandmother, a quilt made by a grandmother, and a platter from Africa. The blanket photos are truly special.

Was there a sentimental part of your nursery that we photographed? We have a sign with a song lyric that my grandmother used to sing to me when I was little.

Any advice to other families picking out wardrobe or preparing for a session? This is a tough time for a mom, because she may not be in maternity clothes or her old wardrobe, so just wear something comfortable and let the baby be the star. Don’t be afraid to have the little one in just a diaper and some blankets, rather than full outfits.

Complete Joy!

Raleigh Newborn Sibling Photography

Raleigh Newborn Sibling Photography 5.jpgP I N this to pinterest

First of all, make sure you go see their maternity portraits here, and their first baby’s newborn portraits with that same tree. (So special!) I love this Mama so much, we have been friends since we were fourteen years old, and such an encourager and special friend she is to me. During this time, my dad was in the hospital in Greensboro, and we were probably running on the same amount of sleep the day of her newborn portraits. It was so special to be able to catch up and see her sweet baby boy.Oh, and I love their bright beautiful kitchen and was so glad we were able to snap a few photos in there while I was there.

According to Mom…

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? Complete joy! I had such a wonderful birth and really felt the presence of God and His grace through it all..especially as I celebrated holding Eli!

What was your favorite part of our session together? I felt so very comfortable and myself being at home. I could tell my smiles were genuine because of that! I also appreciate how Rebecca gives me little hints to get the most flattering shots for mom. For example, I can trust her to tell me to lift my chin so I’m not showing a double chin for the photos. Lol(:

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? We gave baby a bath and swaddled him before nursing him before the session..but he woke up right before!

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous beforehand? It went so well and Rebecca was so patient during the transition times when he needed to go back to sleep or when my toddler needed a snack or break! I was more concerned about how my 2 year old would fare during the session.

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? I would definitely recommend asking a family member or friend to come be a helper that day. My mom really helped entertain and calm my 2 year old and even fed him little snacks between smiles! I would advise clients to prepare as much as they can the day before. We still needed to straighten our nursery and bedroom up a bit that morning and it was a rush!

Did you have a sentimental item at our shoot? We wrapped baby in a swaddle blanket that I love with a Bible verse written on it that is special to me. We also had it embroidered with his name.

Do you have any other children? How did they react to the baby? Silas turned 2 a few weeks before baby Eli was born and was so gentle with him from the start. He loves to hold him with Mommy’s help and shows sweet concern whenever Eli cries.

Any favorite baby gear so far? I definitely wear this baby more! I’ve appreciated the moby wrap (easier to use than it seems at first) and the ring sling.
