Joy

Raleigh Newborn Photography

A little glimpse into the sweetness of this newborn session this week. I absolutely love all of the joy that surrounds a new baby. Sometimes grandparents are also at the session which just adds to the joy. (And how wonderful to have the help when you have a new baby!) And this little one, he slept through most of the session, just so content to be snuggled by his Mommy and Daddy. (And his grandma got in on the snuggles, too!) Grandparents are always included in the newborn session. And it is so, so nice, to have your newborn session at home. We don’t usually use a lot of the room so how decorated your house is doesn’t matter. The focus is on you and the love for your new baby, all without having to leave the comfort of your own home. When it’s time to feed your baby, it’s just nice to have all of your stuff and your comfortable spot. And all your blankets and diaper changing supplies, everything is right there. Ericka also helps with picking out wardrobe, and I can help with last minute wardrobe decisions when I arrive. This was one of those sessions that was just so calm and sweet, and a joy to photograph in their home. Our spring is booking up with newborns – contact us soon if you want to get on the calendar!

Christmas All Year Long

Raleigh Airstream Photography

Last night I finally watched the When Calls the Heart 2017 Christmas special. (I found it on the you tube app on the tv) So I mean, why not keep celebrating all year long! There’s still so much cuteness to share from our 2017 Holiday minis. (And I had just finished season 4 of When Calls the Heart, so now I just have to wait for season 5, ha!) Everytime I come to the end of a show, whether I liked it or not, it’s sad, because I have to find something else to watch when I edit. Sometimes Michael laughs at me because the show may just be really really boring but I don’t want to go through the effort of finding another one, ha, and I’m invested in the story enough. Like when I watched Lost. The beginning was great, but the more I kept watching and it turned into sci-fi, it was like ahhhhhhh. And Michael’s like WHY! Why are you still watching this?! Because I might as well stick to the end at this point and it’s something to watch while I edit and I don’t have to figure out something else to watch. Because, when I start trying to find a new show, I will watch the first episodes of many before I commit, and I just don’t like to spend the time on that mess. Don’t you just love hearing about my tv habits?

I just love these three – so sweet together and always so much fun to photograph. They’ve been to enough minis to know that they are super quick, they get fun props, and that Ericka and I will act as crazy as possible to make them laugh. Their mama also always picks out the prettiest clothes for them (Just wait until you see their Valentine’s outfits!!! More this week on that!)

Friday Faves

“Don’t underestimate the value of Doing Nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering.”

-Winnie the Pooh

I finished When Calls the Heart on netflix this week and now I just need to know, are there more seasons?!?

Airplane mode. This really makes me happy because I go to bed super early friends..Ever since I was pregnant with my second child, I started going to bed early. Mainly because I just need my sleep to function. Putting my phone in airplane mode means no late night texts or messages wake me up and it’s always fun to get all the notifications when I turn it back on the next day.

Forever My Girl Movie. A friend and I were able to get out and go to a movie one late afternoon this week which was super exciting. Movie popcorn? yessssss! So it just sounded like it was going to be a sweet love story movie, which it was. But also, super emotional and so many tears…like sobbing having to use the movie theater napkins to wipe my face. (but I cry at every movie seriously. but this one YES)

I met Mariah in Orlando when she did my hair and makeup for our family photos in Disney World. She is such a make up genius and I was super amazed how she covered up my broken out skin from all the Florida humidity and walking. She has a great tutorial for covering up blemishes but still looking natural here. And she sells her own makeup line here.

Another fave of mine is fast forwarding through suspense and tv/movie scenes I do not like. Michael is always like WHHHHATTT? Why are you fast forwarding? The show is finally getting good…And I’m all like NOOOOO I can’t watch!

On a healthier note, I made these Toasted Quinoa Cashew Butter Cups this week, and they were even Michael approved.

Harrison and I watched Winnie the Pooh together one evening, and oh, do I love Winnie the Pooh. (and I think we have a new Winnie the Pooh fan in our house) We joined the Disney movie club this week (5 movies for 1.00 and then Harrison got a free Lightning McQueen blanket, and you know he is obsessed.) So we have more movies to get us prepared for our next trip, which is right around the corner.

I got some of the Harper + Ari sugar scrub for Christmas and forgot about it. Yes, i know, HOW DO YOU FORGET about sugar scrub?!?! I love the single serve option! So fun!

These boots.  I didn’t buy any tall boots this winter but if I was going to pick a pair, love these + how comfortable they look!

February Goals

Raleigh Maternity Photography

Really looking forward to February. So many sweet things planned this month like our Soda Shoppe Valentine Minis that we are super excited about! It’s also my mom’s birthday which is super fun to celebrate. Hearts everywhere, I love February.

Ok, there are so many books I want to read right now including

Rereading One Thousand Gifts. If you haven’t noticed, I’m reading a lot of Ann Voskamp right now.I’d also love to get a Write the Word Gratitude journal, and some journals for the boys so that we can write out what we are thankful for. I’d really like to take some more time to be outside with the boys (when possible with the weather) just walking and talking about what we are thankful for.

Take a watercolor class. This has been something I’ve wanted to do for a while, and with my mom’s birthday coming up, it’s perfect timing, and we are so excited.

Give more compliments. How many times do you think something and not say it? I really want to be better about this.

Plan 1-2 little adventures with the boys

Encourage more.

Write a few letters and mail them instead of just emailing all the time.

Go see The Greatest Showman before it’s out of the theaters

Attend as much of IF Gathering that I can

I started a slimmer grocery budget in January and I really want to stick to it in February too. Continue the plan and continue eating out only once a week.

Read aloud to Owen more. Harrison and I read out loud picture books, which is so much easier, right? Owen and I have been reading out loud from In The Belly Of The Earth and what a sweet time it has been. I can’t wait to find out if he’s going to be rescued. If you’re looking for some great read alouds, try this website.

Favorite Things Preschool

Raleigh Newborn Family Photography

Navigating the preschool years with my second preschooler, I wanted to share some of the things I have loved educationally for my boys. Owen was such a sponge that soaked up everything and stressed me out to teach him every second of the day, the former teacher in me looked for some resources to keep his little brain happy. (I had to turn on math songs in the car so he wouldn’t make me answer math problems 24 hours a day, no kidding. His brain never stops) Now that my second child is four, we have been working on some things everyday. (which he loves and looks forward to every morning)

Here are a few of my favorite things..

First of all, fine motor skills are super important – building their hand strength so they are ready to start writing in kindergarten. A few favorites are

Crayon Rocks. So much easier to grip the right way and encourage coloring success in those with weak hands

Handwriting Without Tears Crayons. Smaller is better with being able to grip and hold the crayons the right way. Harrison has loved these. This comes with a lot of crayons so you could also split with a friend.

-spray bottle. We’ve had Harrison using the spray bottle “to clean the shower” everyday to build up his hand strength

Mr. Pencil. Owen used the older version of Mr Pencil, and he learned to write so easily. Harrison practices with this daily in the car and all the silly noises make him giggle. I love this for learning how to form letters.

I really love the Endless Reader app on my phone. If Harrison is suffering through a doctor’s appointment of mine or sitting for long periods when we are out and about, this is an awesome educational app.

My Book of Number Games, 1-150 (Kumon Workbooks)These are really cute, and Harrison and I count out loud as we trace the shape. He can use his crayon rocks on the back to color the numbers. I love a lot of the Kumon stuff so much!

Harrison already knows his letters and letter sounds so we have worked on some sight wordsbooks and word familybooks. (We do these together and it’s really just for more experience with words)

My favorite educational show is Super Why, but I do feel like my kids learned so much from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Common Sense Media has a lot of great reviews and suggestions for educational shows.

If you live in Raleigh, the Teach Me Store is a great resource for so many educational things for kids!
