All The Waves in the Sea

These two have such a beautiful home, such a sweet spot to bring home their baby and make memories as a family of three. Such a snuggly morning with their sweet baby boy! And of course, we had to capture some with their fur baby and the Christmas tree. I love December newborn sessions, and this was one of those sessions that I just adored in color and black and white. What a laid back morning at home and so great to meet this sweet family!

I love the quote in their nursery, “If you want to know how much we love you, count all the waves in the sea.”

According to Mom..

1.What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? I remember thinking he was just perfect. Those first few moments after delivery pass by so fast but there is just something so incredible about holding your sweet baby in your arms after 9 months of waiting. I felt so much contentment and joy just holding him against my chest after he was born. In the hours to follow, I became smitten by two things- 1: how much he looked like my husband, 2: his precious lips. his smiles, pouts and expressions just melted my heart because of those adorable lips

2.What was the best part of our session together? The best part of the session was just how easy it was. Hayden was only 8 days old at the time and David and I were still feeling a little bit like sleep deprived zombies. I had no idea how the session was going to flow and worried about Hayden fussing or wanting to nurse during the session but Becky made it so easy. She went with the flow and let us go at our own pace. When Hayden needed a diaper change or simply wanted to nurse, Becky was perfectly fine with us taking a pause and doing our own thing. Her flexibility made it an enjoyable experience.

3.How did you prepare for our photoshoot? Prior to the shoot, I had made arrangements with Patricia, from Perfection by Patricia, to have my hair and makeup done. She came to our house and brought all her supplies on site. It was so nice having the opportunity to get glammed up after a week of bumming it. Plus being able to sit in my pjs the comfort of my home and drink coffee while she did her thing made the experience even better.

4.How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous beforehand? I was definitely nervous beforehand. One of the first things we learned as parents was we were no longer on our own schedule, we were on Hayden’s instead. Hayden ran the show during the early days and when he cried or rooted, we responded. I worried that it might be challenging to meet his needs during the middle of a photoshoot but it was actually not bad at all. Becky allowed us to take breaks as needed and this took the stress away.

Another aspect of the shoot that I had initially worried about was our dog. We really wanted to get some pictures of Hayden with our dog Olsen but Olsen is not always the most friendly dog to strangers. Therefore, we didn’t know how he would respond to Becky and her camera. Those worries were quickly put to rest when David and I came down from changing clothes and found Olsen snuggled up with Becky on our couch. It literally took 5 minutes for them to become best friends and that was a huge relief! We were so pleased with the photos and attribute that to Becky’s skill and patience during the shoot!

What would be your advice to someone having newborn photographs taken? Don’t stress. You will have to take breaks for diaper changes and feedings but Becky expects that. Your session time allows for that. Just enjoy the experience and take care of baby as you need to. A happy clean well-fed baby makes for better pictures.

Do you have any other children? How did they react to the baby? Do you have any cute stories about their relationship? Our dog Olsen is practically our child. Olsen is 7 years old and I have had him since he was 4 weeks old. Olsen is a sweet dog but can sometimes be very territorial and aggressive if he doesn’t know you well. I was so worried about bringing Hayden home to meet Olsen. We even boarded Olsen for the first week just so we could adjust to having a baby without him around. Much to our surprise, Olsen took to Hayden almost immediately. When we introduced the two to one another, Olsen was so sweet. He jumped a few times but never barked or showed any aggression. His tail was wagging a million miles an hour as he licked Hayden’s feet and hands for the first time. It was so adorable seeing how gentle Olsen was. He clearly understood that Hayden was a baby and he needed to be careful around him.

Any advice to other families picking out wardrobe for portraits? Keep it simple. Prior to Becky’s arrival, I had picked out 10 outfits for Hayden for the shoot. He ended up wearing one of those outfits. It just wasn’t realistic to expect him to make a million outfit changes. A simple neutral outfit and white swaddle blanket are all you need.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? My husband works most Saturday mornings. Therefore, it is not often that we get a lot of downtime together as a family on Saturdays but when it does happen, we take full advantage.

Our perfect Saturday consists of a quiet morning together (clearly sleeping in has gone out the window) watching tv on the couch and enjoying a home cooked breakfast. We recently moved to a new neighborhood over the summer and love going for walks together as a family. I’m sure as Hayden gets older we will enjoy getting out and exploring Durham a little bit more but for now, the downtime and rest is nice.

I just love this quote about little boys. And of course, the preciousness of brothers has a special place in my heart being a boy mom. This is not the first time we’ve photographed these two, and they are just so sweet together. And those Santa slippers, adorable! I absolutely love the props Ericka picked out for the Little Blue Truck Minis – that little Christmas tree and the light up lantern were just so much fun. And such sweet memories were made!

We are working on releasing all the dates for our Spring minis, soon, so if you aren’t on the email list, or in our facebook group, sign up for the newsletter here. We usually send out all the details to the email list first. Ericka and I have some super fun ideas planned this year, and we are so excited about them!

Dimples

Raleigh Studio Baby Photographer

This time of year can just be so unpredictable, and well, freezing cold. It’s kind of amazing the difference in temperatures from one day to the next in North Carolina. The studio is perfect for milestone baby sessions on cold winter days. This little one has been such a happy baby ever since her newborn portraits. And her two dimples are just so adorable! I can’t wait to share all of the images from her session, but here’s a few with that precious hat! I also love that her mama brought her pink handmade blanket. I really want one of these in my size (see here, and one of the best prices I’ve seen for the big ones)

The snow is melting and it’s back to school tomorrow. Time to stock up on pb+j, Owen’s favorite for his lunchbox. Also, organic applesauce + Annie’s Granola Barsare at the top of his list. I’m not one of those Mamas that just love shopping at the grocery store – I tend to avoid it at all costs. I will more than likely survive out of the freezer + the pantry than go to the store. (Read more about a pantry challenge here) Harris Teeter Express Lane is always great when I plan ahead. And instacart, shipt, or Amazon prime now in “emergencies.” So tomorrow it’s back to the grocery store and normal routines. This looks like a really yummy winter recipe to try!

Friday Faves

Raleigh Family Photographer

I’ve been watching When Calls the Heart on netflix when editing. It took me a few episodes to get reeled in and now I am hooked.

Keto honestly scares me a little bit but I love eggs so all these recipe ideas, oh yum!

The teddy bear coat trend is an interesting idea.

New KitchenAid attachment– wow!

I wore these shoes at Disney and they were super comfortable. I mostly wear them everywhere now. (And some favorite sweatshirts for the trip here and here) I will admit I was a little tempted to buy some run Disney gear when we were there since it was the marathon, and I will never ever run it, but the jacket was fun! ha!

This instagram post – super encouraging.

A great post about affordable large art.

Did anyone else listen to Adventures in Odyssey as a kid? The boys have loved listening to this!

And because we really don’t understand or know how to handle below freezing temperatures in NC but seem to have a lot of them lately, how to dress when it’s freezing outside.

Loving this post this week, especially since we, in North Carolina, can relate to the snow.

I love these weekly cleaning schedules. Half the time it goes out the window, but it’s fun to have on the days I actually have time to pick up the vacuum.

These snow boots are so adorbs! And we know we still have two more months for it to snow. Ahhhhhh!

Saving for our next trip!

Going to see the new Star Wars tonight! Eeeek! Will let you know what I think!

The Glittery Snow Globe

Raleigh Santa Claus Photographer

I’ve been photographing this sweet girl since she was a newborn + her and Santa together is just precious. I loved this set Ericka worked so hard on so so much! It takes a lot of time to put together the sets, but when they are finished, they are so worth it! And this sweet girl’s dress was just perfect + beautiful. I love the holidays so much so I’ve loved going back through each session to blog them…especially the magic of Santa sessions – little ones bringing their lists and getting just so excited to see Santa. It’s the sweetest.

My boys had so much fun sledding on the little hill behind our house this afternoon. They mostly loved dodging snowballs from their daddy and also trying to hit him with their own snowballs. The snow is just so pretty, I can’t believe I’m saying that I’m actually going to be sad to see it go. Without the hurriedness of errands and carpool, I’ve been able to get a lot of work done. It’s also so fun to see everyone’s snow photos + videos on social media. And the snow looks so pretty with the blue skies today. Still waiting to see if they are going to call off the schools tomorrow. I’m excited to start working on our snowflake cookies! Fun, fun!
