All The Waves in the Sea

These two have such a beautiful home, such a sweet spot to bring home their baby and make memories as a family of three. Such a snuggly morning with their sweet baby boy! And of course, we had to capture some with their fur baby and the Christmas tree. I love December newborn sessions, and this was one of those sessions that I just adored in color and black and white. What a laid back morning at home and so great to meet this sweet family!

I love the quote in their nursery, “If you want to know how much we love you, count all the waves in the sea.”

According to Mom..

1.What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? I remember thinking he was just perfect. Those first few moments after delivery pass by so fast but there is just something so incredible about holding your sweet baby in your arms after 9 months of waiting. I felt so much contentment and joy just holding him against my chest after he was born. In the hours to follow, I became smitten by two things- 1: how much he looked like my husband, 2: his precious lips. his smiles, pouts and expressions just melted my heart because of those adorable lips

2.What was the best part of our session together? The best part of the session was just how easy it was. Hayden was only 8 days old at the time and David and I were still feeling a little bit like sleep deprived zombies. I had no idea how the session was going to flow and worried about Hayden fussing or wanting to nurse during the session but Becky made it so easy. She went with the flow and let us go at our own pace. When Hayden needed a diaper change or simply wanted to nurse, Becky was perfectly fine with us taking a pause and doing our own thing. Her flexibility made it an enjoyable experience.

3.How did you prepare for our photoshoot? Prior to the shoot, I had made arrangements with Patricia, from Perfection by Patricia, to have my hair and makeup done. She came to our house and brought all her supplies on site. It was so nice having the opportunity to get glammed up after a week of bumming it. Plus being able to sit in my pjs the comfort of my home and drink coffee while she did her thing made the experience even better.

4.How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous beforehand? I was definitely nervous beforehand. One of the first things we learned as parents was we were no longer on our own schedule, we were on Hayden’s instead. Hayden ran the show during the early days and when he cried or rooted, we responded. I worried that it might be challenging to meet his needs during the middle of a photoshoot but it was actually not bad at all. Becky allowed us to take breaks as needed and this took the stress away.

Another aspect of the shoot that I had initially worried about was our dog. We really wanted to get some pictures of Hayden with our dog Olsen but Olsen is not always the most friendly dog to strangers. Therefore, we didn’t know how he would respond to Becky and her camera. Those worries were quickly put to rest when David and I came down from changing clothes and found Olsen snuggled up with Becky on our couch. It literally took 5 minutes for them to become best friends and that was a huge relief! We were so pleased with the photos and attribute that to Becky’s skill and patience during the shoot!

What would be your advice to someone having newborn photographs taken? Don’t stress. You will have to take breaks for diaper changes and feedings but Becky expects that. Your session time allows for that. Just enjoy the experience and take care of baby as you need to. A happy clean well-fed baby makes for better pictures.

Do you have any other children? How did they react to the baby? Do you have any cute stories about their relationship? Our dog Olsen is practically our child. Olsen is 7 years old and I have had him since he was 4 weeks old. Olsen is a sweet dog but can sometimes be very territorial and aggressive if he doesn’t know you well. I was so worried about bringing Hayden home to meet Olsen. We even boarded Olsen for the first week just so we could adjust to having a baby without him around. Much to our surprise, Olsen took to Hayden almost immediately. When we introduced the two to one another, Olsen was so sweet. He jumped a few times but never barked or showed any aggression. His tail was wagging a million miles an hour as he licked Hayden’s feet and hands for the first time. It was so adorable seeing how gentle Olsen was. He clearly understood that Hayden was a baby and he needed to be careful around him.

Any advice to other families picking out wardrobe for portraits? Keep it simple. Prior to Becky’s arrival, I had picked out 10 outfits for Hayden for the shoot. He ended up wearing one of those outfits. It just wasn’t realistic to expect him to make a million outfit changes. A simple neutral outfit and white swaddle blanket are all you need.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? My husband works most Saturday mornings. Therefore, it is not often that we get a lot of downtime together as a family on Saturdays but when it does happen, we take full advantage.

Our perfect Saturday consists of a quiet morning together (clearly sleeping in has gone out the window) watching tv on the couch and enjoying a home cooked breakfast. We recently moved to a new neighborhood over the summer and love going for walks together as a family. I’m sure as Hayden gets older we will enjoy getting out and exploring Durham a little bit more but for now, the downtime and rest is nice.
