Everything about this session photographing their senior portraits I just love. It was one of those overwhelming locations – I could have stayed there and photographed different spots for hours. (Like being in Charleston with a bunch of photographers a few weeks ago. It’s like we can barely get anywhere because we want to stop and take pictures!) This senior was very involved in the planning process for this session and we even spent a day hiking to find the best spots for the canoe. I am not crazy about nature so I will admit I was scared half to death hiking through the woods assuming a snake was coming for me at any minute! We ended up finding a spot that was a little more open and would be better for carrying a canoe (see here) and especially since we knew we’d be done after sunset which we were. We spent every last second in this session, and I love, love, love all the images! (You can see part one here and stay tuned to the blog for part three!)

According to the Senior…

What was your favorite part of the session? whimsical theme

Were you nervous about the session beforehand? No, because you’re so easy to work with!

What does this session convey about your style/personality? I love nature, and that I am unique.

What advice can you give to other Seniors preparing for their Senior Portraits? If Becky is taking your pics, you have nothing to worry about!

This was such a fun senior session to photograph (there were three seniors on this day so you will see the other two photographed on the blog soon also!) Thank goodness we had gorgeous weather – so much planning went into this session(finding a canoe, etc) And it was amazing how heavy it was to carry a canoe all the way to the lake, etc. We ended up getting extra help to carry it back to the car afterwards. (You can see a picture on instagram here) And the light was just STUNNING. While everyone was carrying the canoe, I convinced the girls to stop for like three seconds and capture the breathtaking light (see the second to last image at the bottom! eeeeek!!!! I heart sunset) This session was definitely an adventure – I love the unique location and the variety of backgrounds we were able to use.

According to the Senior….

What was your favorite part of the session? The location was by far my favorite part of the session. This location was very unique and I don’t think any other seniors will have pictures quite like mine. This location had a free people, anthropologie vibe going for it and made the entire session very whimsical.

How did you pick your wardrobe? Where did you shop for the session? I wanted my session to reflect me well so I tried to pick clothes that I would wear regularly. I also had my best friend help me pick out outfits as well as her mom because they are much more fashionable than I am.

Were you nervous about the session beforehand? I was slightly nervous having never had professional pictures taken of me before. However, all of my nerves were eased within a few minutes of meeting my lovely photographer.

What does this session convey about your style/personality? This session truly conveys my optimism for life and my love for nature. There is one picture in particular that captures a moment where I look so naturally blissful. This session connected the artsy aspects of my personality with my studious aspects and characterized my entire high school existence.

What advice can you give to other seniors preparing for their Senior Portraits? Practice how you are going to smile and plan your outfits in advance. You will not regret being over prepared however you most likely will regret being underprepared. Bring lots of clothing options!

We ended up with a gorgeous afternoon for this family’s session. Their mama did such an awesome job coordinating their clothes, and we were able to capture some beautiful happy photos of their family. We discussed a few different locations, and I think we even changed the location the day before. We ended up with the perfect spot for their family portraits and the most beautiful sunset light!

According to Mom…

Where was your session and why did you choose the location? Yates Mill. I liked the look of the Old Mill and the waterfall.

What’s your favorite family activity? Spending time at the beach.

What are a few facts about your family?

Todd – loves to fix things, perhaps that’s why he loves puzzles
Dayton – Senior, very protective of his sisters.
Megan – Sophmore in high school, loves German Shepherds
Emily – Huge Harry Potter fan

What was your favorite part of the session? Everyone deserves a moment to feel special. Individually, everyone had a moment to feel good about themselves.

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session. (And she did such an awesome job picking out outfits for everyone!)

This was the hardest part. Lots of trips to many stores back and forth. The girls had to be satisfied with what they were wearing first, then incorporate men after.
Express – Mom & Megan
Old Navy – Emily
Macy’s – Todd & Dayton

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? Worries were about Todd & Dayton relaxing enough to take good photos.

One thing I love about Senior Portraits is brainstorming ways to make the session unique. Your senior portrait session shouldn’t look exactly like anyone else’s. It should reflect your personality and style. Riley and I had already had a brainstorming meeting and we have another date set up in the spring. I usually like to have two locations for Senior sessions and we had just decided on one. When the snow started pouring in, (and pouring, and pouring…I don’t think it stopped snowing this entire day!) it was a perfect backdrop for her second location. Riley said her favorite part of the session was the different theme and ideas, but also my amazing umbrella hat (which made me laugh!) If you are going to take pictures in the snow when it’s actually snowing, the umbrella hat really helps. (You can see a behind the scenes images that her mama took here) We barely get snow like this in North Carolina, but I had tried taking images in the snow before (while my camera was getting soaked from the snow) so I had ordered the hat then and was glad to have it on hand. If I didn’t get a lot of strange looks, it might actually make motherhood easier on rainy days..no holding an umbrella and a toddler – ha!

Riley’s advice to other Seniors, “Relax and be yourself! It’s a portrait of you, and you have to be comfortable and let yourself shine! Also, loosen up and have fun. Think of something funny while you are taking them – Don’t worry about how you look.” It was so much fun to take these, and Riley, her mama, and I definitely laughed, climbed through trees, watched as people driving by stared at the umbrella hat, and were just a little bit cold!!!

When it’s snowing outside, it’s a perfect day for unique senior portraits. I definitely had to take out my umbrella hat for these (see a behind the scenes here) since it was pouring snow all day! It’s so rare for us to get crazy snow, and this was the day that it just would not stop snowing. It definitely made for some beautiful photos, and I can’t wait to share all of these! Riley and I had chatted about coming up with locations/ideas for her senior portraits that were very different, and the snow was just perfect! I will be sharing more soon – cannot wait to share all of them!
