It was such a joy to be able to photograph my sweet niece’s newborn portraits. It was a rainy day the morning of their portraits but big sister was super happy when I arrived and so excited to show me her baby sister. We were able to get so many sweet images and I love the one of the girls napping we were able to sneak in at the end before big sister woke up! These really were so much fun (love the one of my niece staring at herself in the mirror – ADORABLE!) And the two of them together, just precious. We sang a lot of Sophia the First songs and were able to capture some sweet memories.

According to Mom…

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? That she was perfect!

What was your favorite part of the session? I loved that we didn’t have to worry about going anywhere, that took part of the pressure off of us, especially with a two year old at home as well. We could change their outfits easily and my two year old could take a nap when she was done with her part. I also love that the colors of everything go so well hanging on the wall.

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous before? It was a great experience. We got to show off our new baby and just enjoy how sweet and cute she is right now. I was nervous she might not sleep or we couldn’t get the shots we wanted, but it turned out well. Becky was really patient and helpful and knew how to get her to do what we wanted.

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? Just to relax and have fun and just get the shots you can get. The kids make the rules of the pictures, but you’ll get some beautiful pictures!

Did you have a sentimental item at our session? We had a christening gown that my mother, aunt, sister, eldest daughter, cousin and I have all worn. She was the seventh girl in our family to wear it. It is about 50 years old and has so much history and memories in our family.

How did big sister react to the baby?  She loves her sister, but doesn’t have a lot to do with her. She likes to look at her and rub her head sometimes, but is into her own things right now. When she first came to meet her in the hospital she asked if she could pet her new sister.

How would your describe your perfect Saturday as a family? Quiet, at home just spending time in the same room.

Any advice for other families picking out wardrobe? Just feel comfortable and even simple things look really cute on little ones.

My Family | Downtown Raleigh

I love this image with the Raleigh skyline. This has been one of those bucket list images I have wanted of our family. (I am always dreaming up family photo ideas but it can be difficult to actually plan them.) Kelly’s flight got in at 5:55 PM so I was worried we weren’t going to make it downtown before it got dark. And we were really going to be thrown off if it was a dark, cloudy day. Thank goodness there were no delays in her flight and I was able to pick her up and we made it downtown with plenty of light to spare. Michael was also able to get there with all the traffic he has to fight daily. There are so many sweet images that Kelly took, and I can’t wait to share all of them!

Goals for April:

1. Create a Bucket List for spring. (Already working on a pinterest board here)

2. Send more care packages to friends. A good friend planned a lunch date with me recently and made me realize I need to be more intentional with friendships. We are all so busy with life, kids, and work, and I need to take more time to be a good friend.

3. Walk on the greenway more. I REALLY love the greenway, but after all the stories I’ve heard, I just am not ok with going by myself with the kids. If there’s anyone else that would like to meet to walk, please let me know. I’d love to organize some sort of group around 10 A.M. A few different friends and I have walked when we’ve both happened to be available and how encouraging it is to walk with a friend, get fresh air and some exercise.

4. Garden plan for this year. I would love to plant a little bit – not anything huge and not vegetables…just some pretty annuals or perennials. Before we had little ones, I use to plant a lot more and I do love gardening. The last frost date is around April 15th I think so you want to wait until after then to plant. I have planted earlier before and had to put a sheet over my plants if there was a frost warning.  There are a lot of articles out there about how gardening makes you happier like this one.

5. Continue to work on decluttering. I have been amazed and how different our house has been since Jan 1. We have changed complete rooms around and decluttered so much so I want to continue to work on that this month and to plan small projects for each month.

What are your goals for April?

A few things I learned in March…

1. Getting up early changes my day so much. I will admit, it is super hard to get up early, especially when you have little ones, they already get up so early, and you are pretty much exhausted all the time. This month I have consistently gotten up at least an hour before the kids should get up, and it has really changed my days. Being able to read and workout before the day starts makes everyday so much easier.

2. I reallly love mentoring and teaching. I used to be a second grade teacher with full days of singing, dancing, and teaching, so I really enjoy teaching others. I’ve started offering mentoring and had a blast this month. Looking forward to another day of teaching in April.

2. Don’t go to a hair appointment after the dentist. Since I already had a babysitter, I tried to plan both on the same day. It was kind of hilarious…I had to keep myself from drooling through the entire appointment. Thank goodness Margo understands – she is pretty much amazing with my hair.

3. The endodontist is nothing to be scared of. (Yes, I had to go to both the dentist and endodontist this month) I had such a positive experience – I felt like it was better than getting a cavity filled. I have such an extremely hard time at the dentist- I do. I ask for a blanket and bring my headphones and listen to podcasts. (In case anyone else has a hard time going to the dentist also, those two things REALLY help me!)

4. Reading more makes me happy. This goes a long with number one, but man, I LOVE reading and when I’m trying to squeeze it in when the kids are awake, it just rarely happens. Books I read this month – Glitter and Glue, Make it Happen, and Ordering Your Private World. Any suggestions on good books you have read lately?

5. Planning more meaningful experiences into small pockets of time creates some sweet family memories. Michael started a basketball league on a weeknight..and if you know Raleigh traffic, there is no point in him coming home before going back to Morrisville. So, we planned meeting up at the Observation park at RDU to squeeze in some family time, and what sweet memories. I am not fighting traffic to meet him or trying to squeeze in gym time in the afternoons anymore, thank goodness, so this a time we can listen to the control tower, the kids can play in the sandbox, run, and enjoy time as a family. (And how sweet to see Harrison pointing to the sky the next day looking for airplanes.)

6. Even a one year old will pick out the marshmellows in Lucky Charms. We got a box of Lucky Charms for St. Patrick’s Day, and it cracked me up that Harrison only ate the marshmellows and ignored the rest.

What did you learn in March?! April Goals on the blog tomorrow!

Every Thursday we planned this sweet family’s newborn portraits at home, it snowed in February. Still can’t believe how much crazy weather we had in February. (but taking photos in the snow was fun, too!) The morning of their session was surprisingly warm, and they had the most perfect greenway spot in their backyard. It was just perfect. There was also a mix of partly sunny/mostly cloudy that morning that was just so pretty. So much depends on light when taking portraits, and, wow, what perfect light we had that morning!

What a sweet session celebrating the arrival of baby sister – According to Mom, “Our baby came to us through adoption, and the first time I saw her, I had so many conflicting thoughts – 1.Wow, she’s gorgeous! 2.My heart is falling in love but her birth mom can still change her mind, and 3. If her birthmother decides to give her to us, it will be the greatest sacrificial gift, and I can’t wait to share her story with her.” Jayden is also loving being a big brother (He was just sooooo cute during the session, and we may have stopped for one of his mama’s homemade oatmeal cookies! We were totally laughing because you could possibly see the cookie in one of the images) According to Mama, his baby “sissy” was crying the other night, and he came up to her, put his hand on her stomach and began singing to her. She stopped crying and immediately stared up at him – what a precious moment! These two are going to be best friends and are already just so sweet together.

A few questions answered by Mom

What was your favorite part of the session? Becky is so fun, down-to-earth, talented and gifted. She made our session fun and had a great balance of offering ideas for the shoot, as well as seeking to understand what shots were important to us.

Were you nervous or worried about your newborn session? It was a great experience. I wasn’t nervous or worried. It turned out very well. At first, I thought the pictures wouldn’t look “newborn” because they were taken when she was about 5 weeks old, but I actually liked the way the pictures turned out better, since she had some more meat on her bones than when she was first born

Did you have a sentimental item at your session? We used a blanket with her name Kenna Grace, which means “Beautiful Grace.” We feel as if her entire adoption story is a picture of beautiful grace.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? Spending time outside in the warm sunshine. Being together as a family, taking a picnic, going to the pool, grilling out, just being together. (And they have the perfect backyard for being outside!)

What a joy it is has been to photograph this sweet family’s maternity, newborn, and now 6 month photos. I’ve also seen this little one’s smiling face at 2014 and 2015 client events. (Looking forward to seeing her again this year, too!)  And she is full of smiles and brings so much joy to her family. One thing that is great about the first year mini sessions is capturing how much they change and grow, their sweet little personalities, and their favorites. This mama brought all of her favorite toys, including Mrs. Butterworth. Some of the milestones her Mama wanted to capture were playing with her toes (I looooove this milestone – so adorable!) and eating her favorite food, bananas. We also got photographs of a jumper that was made just for her by a friend and her first shoes! This mama’s advice to other Mama’s preparing for their first year mini session, “Think of things that you want to capture but don’t have enough hands to capture.” This is so true, too, since I know I always need help photographing my boys!
