Downtown Raleigh Baby Photographer

Skyline First Birthday

I have loved photographing this sweet baby boy during his first year. I first met his sweet family at their newborn session. They are so easygoing and fun and a joy to photograph. I think we made it through their session right before it started raining. I could not even stand how cute this little one is - those curls, oh my!

According to Mom…

What kind of feel were you thinking for your session? We wanted to celebrate living in Raleigh. We moved here three years ago, had our son here a year ago, and I wanted our photos to reflect that.

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one. Benson, my husband, was born in India and raised in TX.
Ayan, my son, loves fish, following (and trying to catch) our cat around the house. So far, the cat manages to elude him.

What was your favorite part of our session? I love working with Becky-she’s so good and so easy to be around! I loved being outside, although I didn’t love the humidity that day, I loved seeing a new part of the area. I just love having the three of us spend time together, have fun, and then have an amazing photographer capture the moments. Usually I’m the one taking the pictures, so I am not often in the photos with Ayan so it’s important to me that we have pictures as a family.

What’s your favorite family activity? We love family walks, hikes, and vacations in the mountains.

What was the weather like the day of your session? So hot. So humid. I was so sweaty, but it made Ayan’s hair curl so sweetly.

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session. Jeans and a white sleeveless top from Ann Taylor Loft. I’m so comfortable in jeans and I thought white sleeveless would be a have a summery feel.

What props did you bring and why? I brought some colorful books and toys to serve as distractions and to add color to the photos if needed.

What are some words of wisdom you have for other families preparing for a session? No need to prepare! Just be yourselves and have fun. Maybe think about your outfits a bit. Also, maybe don’t plan an outdoor shoot during the most humid month of the year…

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? Nope, no worries!

How to Send your Christmas Cards on Time…and Avoid the Naughty List

The fact that I am writing this post makes me giggle. If you know me in real life you know that I work best under pressure (the Oh No, this is due today kind of pressure). Last year I had an epiphany. How wonderful and refreshing it is to mail your Christmas Cards on time and at no extra cost. They are an investment after all! I was so happy they finally would arrive BEFORE December 24th. Unlike past years, I did not have to pay a rush fee to the card printing company or upgrade the shipping for them to arrive faster.

I am sharing with you some tips for you to become a Christmas-Card-Genius this year!

  1. It is never too early to start planning: Clothing with holiday colors and fun accessories go on sale towards the end of the season. For example I stocked up with Christmas pajamas in January. I am so excited to use them for my Christmas Photo Session this year!
  1. Keep your address list updated: I keep my family & friends address list in an excel spreadsheet on my computer. I update it as I receive information on them moving, getting married, having kids. Since I have little ones - I also add/edit my list as I receive Birthday Cards and/or Classrooms Lists. This way I know where to send my cards and I also have a good idea on how many cards I am going to need to order.
  1. Take your photos early (Please hear me out on this one!) Avoid scrambling around during photographer’s busiest season. Contact your photographer to make sure you are on the schedule. Do not forget to double check their current turnaround time. Starting in September, most photographers will also start communicating their holiday schedule and information for their mini-sessions! They will fill up fast, so make sure you sign up as soon as you possibly can. I am so super excited to be styling Becky’s Holiday Minis - some dates are fully booked but there is still some availability. If you are interested in any of them contact us ASAP
  2. Order your Christmas Cards! Off season prices are cheaper AND you will not have to upgrade shipping options if you have plenty of time. Several companies, like Minted, also offer a free recipient address printing. I used it last year and it was just the cherry on top. It saved me time addressing them myself and they looked so much more presentable! You can click over to Minted to see their gorgeous Foil-Pressed Holiday Cards, too! (sooo pretty!)

  1. Order your Holiday-Themed stamps early: These stamps are normally available by the beginning of October. They can be pre-ordered here. Last year I had my heart set on the ornament set stamps and it was sold out at my closest USPS offices. I will be pre-ordering this year for sure! I personally think that having your cards addressed, sealed and stamped by November 30th is ideal. You can drop off them in the mail December 1st. What a great way to start the month! You can then sit back and wait on receiving your family and friends cards…and stress about parties and gifts…but that is a subject for a completely different post!

A few images from last year’s minis (and this year’s are going to be sooo cute, too!) and of course, my Christmas card!

Chapel Hill Baby Photographer

Running Through the Garden

Let me tell you, this little one was just precious running around the UNC Arboretum. What a sweet session celebrating his first birthday. We got so many sweet images with his Mommy and Daddy! You can see his sweet little personality just shining through. It may have been a million degrees, thank you, August, but you wouldn’t know it by this little one’s smile.

According to Mom..

What kind of feel were you thinking for your session? For our session the main thing I wanted to focus was my family. I choose Chapel Hill as our backdrop and we took pictures in the arboretum on the Chapel Hill campus and the surrounding area. Grayson loves flowers so we were able to get some amazing shots with the flowers in the background and he even picked a few for pictures. The session was perfect.

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one. My husband Matt and I are big Carolina fans, especially my husband which is why Chapel Hill was such a great backdrop for this session. My son Grayson is 13 months and he is full of energy and enthusiasm. Becky was able to capture so many of his unique and special expressions in this session. I was born and raised in Hillsborough and I grew up spending a great deal of time in Chapel Hill so it was fun to have our session there.

What was your favorite part of the session? My favorite part was seeing Grayson play with the flowers and Becky was able to catch some great shots of him at the perfect moment.

What’s your favorite family activity? Our current favorite activity is going to the pool. We all love the water, especially Grayson.

What was the weather like the day of your session? hot hot hot.

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session - why you chose them, etc. We decided to go with a blue theme for our session. I purchased my blue dress from j.crew and Grayson wore a seersucker suit my Mom bought him for his birthday. My husband Matt wore a blue shirt.

What props did you bring and why? The only props we brought was Grayson’s lovey to keep him occupied if he got fussy and we did have to use it a few times.

What are some words of wisdom you have for other families preparing for a session? I think you should definitely use the style service. It helped out a great deal and our pictures turned out amazing. The stylist helped bring everything together.

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? I was not worried because I felt like we were in good hands.

Raleigh Downtown Newborn Photography NC | That Dreamy Nursery

This was one of those perfect weekday mornings at home. This sweet baby girl woke up from her nap a few minutes after I arrived, and she was just so happy. Her nursery was just so pretty, and the perfect spot to start our session. So much love went into her room, and I am always thrilled when the nursery has pretty light for us to use. This little one was very interested in the camera, and she had some sweet schnauzer siblings (OH MY GOODNESS - THEY WERE SO CUTE!) Did they love her or what? I have grown up with schnauzers and love, love, love them. Love everything about this session - it was just the sweetest morning at home. (I know I say it all the time, but I loovvvvvvvve sessions at home!)

According to Mom….

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? How crazy and amazing it was to create a little person and bring her into this world!

What was your favorite part of our session? Everything seemed so natural and easy! We were comfortable being in our own home and Becky was so patient with us and had great ideas for photos.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? Made sure she was well rested and had a full tummy. She was so intrigued by the clicking of the camera!

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous before the session? It was the perfect experience! I wouldn’t have changed a thing about it. Obviously I was nervous how Hudson would do because babies are so unpredictable but everything worked out really well!

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? Just relax and enjoy the moments.

Was there a sentimental item in your nursery or parts of your nursery that we photographed that are special to you? Becky did a great job photographing Hudson’s nursery with us in it. She used a special lens that was able to capture the whole room, it’s one of my favorite photos.

Do you have any other children? How did they react to the baby? Hudson is our first baby!

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? Stay in pajamas all morning and be lazy:)then maybe go for a stroll later and sit outside at a local restaurant with some friends!

Any advice to other families picking out wardrobe or preparing for family portraits? I would think to go neutral and classic…something that will look great 20 years from now when you’re still enjoying the photos!
