Quick Lit June

Wake Forest Newborn Photographer

As soon as summer hit, so did my reservations at the library. I basically went through my list and put EVERYTHING on hold, because I mean, when you are 97 in line, it could take a while. I was surprised four books showed up right away, and of course there is the Lucky Day shelf, which is the best thing ever. (The shelf right when you walk in the library when has new bestsellers that can’t be reserved – they are only for people who walk in the library. It’s a treat. I love, love, the lucky day area) Owen has also reserved every copy of Captain Underpants  since they are always checked out and he is loving the reservation part of the library. He will have the series finished this week and I’m always looking for recommendations for great boy series/books, so send me what you have!

America’s First Daughter

So I love historical fiction, so of course, when I heard about this book, I had to get it. It’s such a great story written from the point of view of Thomas Jefferson’s oldest daughter Patsy. It is full of history and a lot of things I didn’t know about Thomas Jefferson’s life – great read.

The Woman on the Orient Express

I am not sure where I got the referral for this book, an I wasn’t even sure if I was going to like the story line. I get like that so much – where I read the info about the story and it’s like I don’t think I’ll like this. (AND I LOVE IT) This book was truly fascinating and loosely based on Agatha Christie’s life. It’s about three women who meet on a train traveling to the Middle East and all the problems they face – definitely enjoyed this book.

Hourglass: Time, Memory, Marriage

I’m not usually a memoir reader and at first, I was a little skeptical since the way this book is written is a little different. It’s in short, separated little glimpses of time that kind of bounce back and forth. I love reading and learning about writers, so I ended up loving this book and what she shared about her life and marriage. It was super sweet – I got it from the library, but I almost want a copy for myself. It made me want to go back through my old journals and read them. I’ll definitely want to read some more Dani Shapiro books.

A Long Way Home
I love reading books that have movies to go along with them. First of all, the book is amazing and what an incredible, true story. This is a story about a boy in India who gets lost on a train and then everything he goes through and eventually ends up being adopted. He then grows up and tracks down the village he was born in using Google Earth. I don’t want to spoit it any more, but this story is amazing. I highly recommend reading the book because there is so much to his story in the book. Then, rent Lion  on Amazon Prime and watch it because at the end you get to meet him, and there’s so many tears, and I don’t want to spoil it, but just incredible. I loooooved this book!

What great books have you read lately? Let me know in the comments! Posting this Halloween image below, because, we are about to start booking Fall/Halloween/Holiday Minis in a few weeks! Contact us for more info and sign up for the newsletter here.

Worth the Wait

Cary Raleigh NC Newborn Photographer

In his nursery, a sign on the wall reads, “Some things are worth the wait.” How sweet that is, and I love that his Mama said she thought, “He is an amazing gift!” when she first saw him. Little ones truly are a gift, and I love photographing the first days at home with them which pass by so quickly and often in a blur. They also had a schnauzer who loved sunbathing, and I loved capturing that since I grew up with schnauzers, and they are so so sweet. Could this little one be any sweeter? So many sweet images of him snuggling with his Mommy + Daddy!

According to Mom…

What’s the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? He is such an amazing gift!

What was your favorite part of our session together + the best part of having a newborn session at home? I loved that you were so relaxed and patient with us getting organized and when John was fussy. It made me more relaxed about the session. I appreciated being at home since I was still recovering from the C Section and going out to a studio would have been impossible.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? I found some inspiration on Pinterest, and shopped for myself with the tips/ideas from Ericka. Other than that I just showered & did my hair & makeup before you got there!

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you nervous or worried beforehand? I was excited to capture the special time with our new family. It was an easy process – I wasn’t nervous or worried.

It turned out great – I was a little tired and ready to be done at the end, and I think John was too – but I was glad we got the shots that we did at the end, so it was worth it being a little longer.

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? Plan ahead for your outfits and plan on just going with the flow of the baby. Being at home made that really easy.

Did you have a sentimental item at our shoot? We have the afghan my aunt made for John. She makes one for all the new babies in our family so it was really special to get one for our little one.

How would your describe your perfect Saturday as a family? We haven’t gotten to do this yet – but I’d love to push the baby in a stroller at the park near our house and get brunch afterward (at home or La Farm!) Then enjoying some playtime with the baby and maybe a long nap when he naps!

Any advice to other families picking out wardrobe or preparing for family portraits? Get tips/shopping ideas from Ericka! She made it really easy for us – I shopped our closets first too!

Besides that, just give yourself plenty of time to get ready and know that you’re in good hands and the finished product will be well worth the effort. I am so happy to have these adorable shots of John as he’s already changed so much in just a few weeks!

So Many Giggles

One Year Baby Photographer Raleigh

I always feel like I blink after their newborn sessions when they turn one. It’s really, like how can this even be possible? And this little one, we were photographing him close to his bedtime so of course, this session was super quick. With everything going on, and how quick this session was, he still managed to give me so many smiles and giggles. So, so, so cute! What I love about sessions is that it is a time to play and make memories..to have fun together as a family and also capture that in the photos.

We went to see Captain Underpants with friends today, and well, it was everything you dreamed a boys movie could be. (Some theaters have discounts on Tuesdays, which is awesome)It was actually really funny, and I could see how Owen’s age would love it, but also a little much on the potty talk, of course. My girl ears were like ewwwww. Owen has been devouring the chapter books so, of course, I have put every single one on hold at the library in the hopes that one day he will be able to read more. (it is kind of amazing how many girl series books there are vs. boys. Just not that much great stuff. If you have any suggestions for other series, I would love to hear them) I grew up going to the movies a lot..I mean, my Mama loves movies. Since she loved them, of course, I was the kid who never wanted to watch tv or movies. I never watched Saved by the Bell and remember a little bit of Full House, but mostly I would rather be doing something else. Even in college, I never really wanted to sit around and watch movies. It still baffles Michael when something comes on tv, and he’s like remember this? Um no. I owned like 7 dvds in college/after college and I married a man who has oodles and oodles of them. My favorite movies growing up (I can remember all of them because there were so few) were Anne of Green Gables, Never Been Kissed, My Best Friend’s Wedding(i watched this so many times) 10 Things I Hate About You, and The Wedding Singer. There were more, I’m sure, but these are the ones I can remember. Who else has old chick flicks they remember + want to share? Now that I spent so much time sitting on the couch editing for my job, of course I am now watching netflix and movies. Too funny! Michael still can’t believe it some days. Ok, enough of my rambling about Captain Underpants + movies..on to the one year cuteness!

Baby Brother Coming Soon

Maternity Mommy Me Photography Raleigh

Our 2017 Mommy and Me Minis was the first time Ericka and I met these two, and just how sweet are they together? Our Mommy and Me Minis are 15 minutes long and we try to have fun yet move everyone through quickly so we can get as many mini images as possible. These two just had so much fun together and you can just tell the special bond they have. I know they are so excited about a baby brother coming soon! You can see more from our styled Mommy and Me Minis with Little Apple Styles here. I have only gotten to share a few of them so far!

So I had a session recently where we were discussing problems with glasses. My prescription hasn’t changed in three years, and I am not the easiest on my glasses. So, I have a few different pairs, and a pair of prescription sunglasses + then contacts. If I’m at a session, I’m usually wearing contacts because it’s just easier and they won’t fall off my face. I have a super old pair of glasses that is missing one side that goes over your ear and then I have a newish pair that are a little bit more decent for going out so I don’t usually wear these as much at home. (I am always losing my glasses in the house. I take them off to do something and then have no clue where they ended up or if someone walked off with them) So, I came up with a solution for my oldest pair that’s missing a side…a pencil. Yes – my pencil glasses. They are amazing. You just tape a pencil to the side and voila. I think I showed up at Ericka’s house once for a meeting and she was like what in the world crying. Michael still laughs at me all the time – I’m like geez, I’ve been wearing these forever…how is it still funny? Ok, so in case anyone else is in need of extra glasses laying around, the pencil, try it. I may be brave enough one day to post a picture of me in my pencil glasses. Oh, and P.S. it’s even better if your hair is up – to stick the pencil in your hair. Just sayin’.

Oh, and I’m totally that person wearing their prescription sunglasses in the store without realizing it, because, you know, I can still see! Ok, enough with the glasses talk and more of the adorableness of these two!

Joy

Cary Raleigh Newborn Photographer

I seriously love photographing the joy of siblings together. It is the sweetest thing when they are so excited about the new baby and want to show them to me and tell me all about them. (I’ll be honest, this does not happen every session:)This big brother was absolutely adorable with his baby brother, and overall just loved being with his Mommy + his Papa, too. I photographed his newborn portraits a few years ago, and was so happy when I heard from them again. (You can see their maternity portraits here)

I know most of the memories Owen will have of the first days of having a brother are from photographs and videos but he loves, loves, loves, watching the video of holding his brother for the first time. What a special day that was for him, and it is kind of amazing how he can remember some of the details from that day and from the first few weeks of having a brother. Siblings have a special bond, and I love photographing that in the early days of newborn sessions. It’s just so special.

Today is one of those rainy days..looks like tomorrow might be a little rainy, too! A few rainy day ideas if you just need to get out of the house…Go to the library! Looking around can occupy them forever + there’s also story time for the little ones. It is also the best day to take out playdoh.  Yes, it gets everywhere + is disastrous but it keeps them occupied for like ever. (and really more time than that) You could also make this Kid approved snack mix + pop in a movie. There is always jumping in the puddles – also super fun. This Firework Salt Painting also looks super cute with July 4th right around the corner. Enjoy the rain – I always love editing on rainy days or watching a movie sipping a yummy calming tea.
