Officially A Big Brother

North Raleigh Newborn Photography

I really love sibling sessions, and I honestly do not get stressed. I’ve been around so many siblings through the years – siblings of all different ages and temperaments that sibling images do not stress me out. I guess, after doing this for so many years, I just know in my heart, that at some point, we will get the shot. I will exhaust all the tricks of the trade…at some point, we will find some common ground and the siblings will be in the same spot for a moment together having a sweet moment that they probably have easily when I’m not around. It is super exciting to have someone new in your home, especially when you have a new baby, and chances are, you aren’t going very many places so that makes it extra exciting when I show up. Some kids are super shy when I arrive and some are super excited. Sometimes there are lots of laughs and sometimes tears from crying so hard to try to get the sibling to show some interest in their newborn baby brother or sister. (which you know, as soon as I leave, they would ask to hold them, etc..it’s just more exciting when I’m there to show me how they can run around and throw things and giggle as long as it’s nowhere near the new baby) So I always feel bad because parents are usually stressed trying to get the two together and during the process, all the while the wheels are turning in my head as to what may work. In case anyone was wondering, the whole session revolves around the sibling… they are calling the shots, we just have to go along with it..and the newborn usually has a lot of say in what’s going on in the session, too. (If they need a snack break, if they are tired of their sibling breathing all over them and poking them, etc) All that to say is that sometimes images appear effortless when there was a lot of giggles and laughing and throwing all the stops to get two little ones in one spot. And usually when we get them together, they love looking at their baby and telling us all about them.

And this little one, amidst all his giggles, loooooves his baby sister. He was just so so sweet with her, and at one point, just laid his head right next to hear and laid down without anyone asking. He was just precious with her and it was so so sweet to capture. Hard to believe, we just took their family maternity portraits! (See that magical session here) Ok, enough of my rambling, on to the sweet photos of this big brother + his baby sister!

The New Baby

North Raleigh Newborn Photographer

It is summer, which means both of my boys are with me during the day, when I’m not working, and also we are spending a lot of time outside. If we aren’t outside or at the pool, chances are we are at the library. I lovvve summer reading and really just reading in general, and my boys definitely have a love of books. We are always scanning the bookshelves, looking up books online and reserving them, talking about books, and well, reading. (When I get a minute…) We drove to Greensboro for Father’s Day and so riding in the car is always an excuse to read, when I don’t have to be driving. (I just finished The Jane Austen Project, it was so so good, especially if you are a Jane Austen fan, kind of a historical fiction kind of book) All that being said, the boys and I are big bookworms..I was thinking about and laughing about the other day, what I wanted to be when I grew up. I have no clue why, but I always wanted to be a writer for the New York Times. My childhood was spent journaling and writing, so writing and being a reporter makes sense..but now I couldn’t even imagine it!  I did also take a lot of photos, and can still remember waiting for film to come back in the mail or an hour at the drug store! I’ll have to tell you all about my experiences in developing film another day..

This sweet summer baby boy was a treat to photograph with his older siblings. (How sweet that they were reading My New Baby and even read Happy Birthday to You!  to their baby brother!) I first met this family in the early days of my business and have been photographing them since their oldest was three months old! I’ll never forget that sweet session in their front yard. We’ve had several sessions over the years in their house just hanging out and playing with their toys which is so much fun! Their baby brother was just loved on so much the day of his portraits, and he even smiled about it a little! So fun when newborns smile!

According to Mom…

What was your favorite part of our session together? The best thing about having a session at home is that everyone is more relaxed and you get pictures that reflect your normal everyday lives. I love the pictures of the siblings in their rooms.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? The nice thing about having the session at home is that the baby was ready to go-nothing extra needed.

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you nervous or worried beforehand? Our experience could not have gone better. Becky is amazing with the kids and is able to get them to relax so the pictures look so natural. This is my favorite part about sessions with Becky.

What would be your advice to someone else having their newborn photographs taken? Look through the blog to get ideas of what you do and do not want for your family pictures. Get your outfits ready before the baby arrives and let Ericka help.

And A High Five at the End

Downtown Raleigh One Year Baby Photography

This little one was full of so many smiles – he just started giggling as soon as he got out of the car at the park. Sometimes babies can be distracted when outside and just fascinated by all the noises and sounds, but not this little one. He was just so happy playing with his Mommy and Daddy at the park. What a cutie he is and so many memories made during his one year portraits. I love the variety we could get at this location and how adorable was he holding up his finger that he was one. We had ot keep an eye on the weather that day, and we were sure if it was going to pour during the session. It was a dark and cloudy evening, but thank goodness, the rain stayed away. For some reason, sometimes when I’m at the park, it’s like we are magnets for rain. This little one was just so adorable, such a fun session…and the high five at the end, sooo cute!

Sunrise

NYC Central Park Family Photographer

We went on an amazing crazy 1700 mile road trip for Spring Break this year (read all about it here) We crammed so much into a little bit of time..and we were supposed to be in NYC for two days, but it ended up being less than 24 hours because we had to rearrange our trip for a few things..All that being said, if I was going to take pictures in NYC, I’d definitely choose sunset, but, with being there with such little time, sunrise was our only option. And I mean, we had fifteen minutes maybe before it was too bright and covered in light. My husband loves me since he drove us the night before and slept five hours to get up at sunrise for this. He also helped me location scout something that showed the buildings but that would also work at sunrise. And lastly, of course, all his amazing sounds that make the boys crack up while I am trying to photograph them.*Husband of the year* We even picked our hotel to be close, and that worked out great. We did take a quick taxi drive there since it was a little dark, and we barely beat another photographer to the exact spot. Whhhhew. Central Park was hopping though…everyone in the city was up and working out. I really wanted an image with the skyline in the background and I love these so much of my little cuties. *Special thanks to Ericka for meeting me at Janie and Jack last minute to review wardrobe* Oh, and Harrison’s bowtie was the exact same print as Michael’s tie he wore on our wedding day, so it was must. Love it!

Counting You Twice

Knightdale Wake Forest Raleigh Newborn Photographer

I first met these two at their maternity portraits, and they are just so much fun to be around. They definitely laugh and have so much fun together. And they’ve been through so much, waiting for this baby boy, and just have so much JOY. Their puppy is also so special to them, and I love that we were able to capture her in a few portraits, too! And, wow, their nursery was just amazingly beautiful, even a stunning shiplap wall! This was such a sweet morning photographing this family at home.

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? I cried and was so overjoyed! I was relieved he was here but also praying he was going to be ok as he was a whole month early. I was overjoyed because we waited 3 years for him and we prayed for him every day.

What was your favorite part of our session together? I loved being in the comfort of our own home. It made the session more relaxed but also captured our life in the house we have built together. I loved being able to capture the sweet details of Jack’s nursery as well. And we were also able to have photos with Sassy and capture all of us as a family. My favorite part was having my mom in town and being able to capture some photos of her, Jack and me. I also appreciate your outgoing personality and making us all feel comfortable for the session. AND being patient with us since Jack refused to go to sleep:)

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you nervous or worried beforehand? It was a great experience!! I wasn’t nervous at all and was excited for the session. I also loved chatting with Ericka on what outfits to wear and how we can best look in our photos. It was one less thing I had to worry about. I am absolutely in love with the photos and will cherish them forever!

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? I would say to have them done in your home where you feel comfortable and relaxed. It’s also helpful because if the baby needs to be changed or fed, it’s convenient and not stressful. Pick a photographer that you also feel comfortable with, is patient with babies/children and can help you with positioning and finding the best angles.

Did you have a sentimental item at our session? We used a rainbow blanket I had made for Jack in the session. We suffered 3 losses before having Jack and he is our miracle baby. He is definitely the sunshine and rainbow at the end of the long storm. He is everything to us.

Was there a sentimental item in your nursery that we photographed? I attended a class at AR Workshop in Raleigh and made the sign hanging over Jack’s crib. The sign read ‘When I count my blessings, I count you twice’. I love that you incorporated this sign in a lot of our photos. It is so special.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? Well we haven’t really gone out yet as a family (lol) but I would say enjoying the fresh air, sitting in yard playing with Sassy, grilling out and just relaxing with some music.

Any advice to any other families picking out wardrobe or preparing for a session? I would definitely recommend working with a stylist like Ericka. I love that she was able to use pieces from our wardrobe, so we really didn’t need to spend extra money on clothes. It took the stress out of figuring it out myself and the photos ended up having the look and feel I envisioned.
