One thing I love about Senior Portraits is brainstorming ways to make the session unique. Your senior portrait session shouldn’t look exactly like anyone else’s. It should reflect your personality and style. Riley and I had already had a brainstorming meeting and we have another date set up in the spring. I usually like to have two locations for Senior sessions and we had just decided on one. When the snow started pouring in, (and pouring, and pouring…I don’t think it stopped snowing this entire day!) it was a perfect backdrop for her second location. Riley said her favorite part of the session was the different theme and ideas, but also my amazing umbrella hat (which made me laugh!) If you are going to take pictures in the snow when it’s actually snowing, the umbrella hat really helps. (You can see a behind the scenes images that her mama took here) We barely get snow like this in North Carolina, but I had tried taking images in the snow before (while my camera was getting soaked from the snow) so I had ordered the hat then and was glad to have it on hand. If I didn’t get a lot of strange looks, it might actually make motherhood easier on rainy days..no holding an umbrella and a toddler – ha!

Riley’s advice to other Seniors, “Relax and be yourself! It’s a portrait of you, and you have to be comfortable and let yourself shine! Also, loosen up and have fun. Think of something funny while you are taking them – Don’t worry about how you look.” It was so much fun to take these, and Riley, her mama, and I definitely laughed, climbed through trees, watched as people driving by stared at the umbrella hat, and were just a little bit cold!!!

When it’s snowing outside, it’s a perfect day for unique senior portraits. I definitely had to take out my umbrella hat for these (see a behind the scenes here) since it was pouring snow all day! It’s so rare for us to get crazy snow, and this was the day that it just would not stop snowing. It definitely made for some beautiful photos, and I can’t wait to share all of these! Riley and I had chatted about coming up with locations/ideas for her senior portraits that were very different, and the snow was just perfect! I will be sharing more soon – cannot wait to share all of them!

This little one lives just around the corner and stopped by in between snow days for his one year portraits at the studio. With all the snow the past two weeks, a lot of sessions have had to be rescheduled but the day of this little one’s portraits the roads were great. I am not great with driving in the snow…I was totally one of the people stuck (two weeks after moving to Raleigh) in 2005 during the ice storm where people were stuck in their cars for hours. My husband grew up in Ohio so he is so much better at handling the roads. I’m still counting down the days until warm weather and summer!

So many first year sessions coming up this spring –  this mama recommends keeping it relaxed and fun. Be silly and you will get some great smiles. Bring a sibling along for laughs, too! Big sister was definitely a big help – he just smiled and giggled and laughed at her the entire time – precious! Mom said she was nervous about bringing big sister to the shoot but she ended up being a great help! She really made him laugh and giggle.

Thinking of planning a first year session in the studio? According to this Mama, “It was so natural and the lighting was awesome. I love how she just captures life moments and nothing looks posed.” Thank you soooo much, for the kind words and I love capturing these sweet memories for families. Our little ones just grow so quickly, don’t they?! Harrison started walking yesterday (my children love to wait until the last minute to walk) and I’m amazed at how grown up he looks already!

It’s always nice to have helpful hints of where to buy things. This little one’s onesie was from Etsy, the balloon was ordered from Amazon, and the cake was from Harris Teeter.

If you’re like me, I was sooooo excited to announce when we were expecting a little one – just so much fun! And I love these new Maternity announcements – just could not wait to share them! I love these customizable new templates for sharing the news on social media or even printing on a card to send in the mail. These could even be customized for a gender reveal. (I was really excited about sharing the gender both times, too!)

One thing I love about my job is being one of the first to find out when someone is expecting. Oh, this little guy is just PRECIOUS. He was happy to be wide awake at his newborn portraits, and at this three month session, he was perfectly content to take a nap (and also wake up for a few happy images with his Nana and Poppie.) Such a sweet afternoon with their first grandchild. According to Nana, getting to spend any time totally focused on our grandson is the best time ever – having this captured on film is priceless! This session was a special day planned by little Zach’s mama and his Nana was treated to hair and makeup before the session. (Having your hair and make up done for photos is just the best!) Love the sweet fist bump with his Poppie, and all of the sweet moments of the three of them. I can’t even imagine the love that you feel for a grandchild. This little one’s Nana said the first time they saw him there was disbelief and amazement followed by unbelievable love – that they can’t keep from smiling whenever they see him. What a gift he is to this sweet family and love every single one of these images!
