I first met this sweet family for their maternity portraits several weeks before their little girl was born. We took their maternity portraits at their home, too, so it was great to already know the best lighting spots in the house and we also used a few different rooms like the nursery. Another super fun part of this session was that they wanted to wait to give their sweet baby girl her first bath until I got there so that it could be photographed. (What a great idea! We saved it for the very end of the session) It was a surprise that they were having a baby girl but they were still prepared with some super sweet headbands and the joy that they have for their baby girl was just evident in every single image. So many things I love about this session and sweet family – really I could go on and on but here’s a few more

* Love that we used a special blanket made just for her

* Love how we used the basket that they already had in their home. I love images that match the style of your home.

* Love how we recreated some of their maternity portraits with baby (so so fun!)

* Just like their maternity portraits, I couldn’t decide between color or black and white….just can’t decide which one I like better

* The third image of Dad and Baby – priceless!! Just love it!! I still can’t believe that happened – so amazing!

I love newborn sessions at home – capturing family heirlooms in your home. And this mama is pretty awesome – helping me find new locations. (like the one for our fall picnic. Still want to use this location again!) I’m already starting to book newborn sessions in 2015 so if you’re thinking of booking a session, contact me soon!

It’s the first day of October (Can you believe it?!) We will be celebrating with pumpkin muffins this morning. That has been my word lately..celebrate. I’ve been trying to find more ways to celebrate the little things (like the last day of summer with an ice cream cone and the first day of fall with a picnic  – Our awesome picnic treats were made by Sugar Euphoria)

Last day of Summer Ice Cream Cone

I got a chalkboard for Owen’s room and I’ve been using a chalk marker to make a calendar for the month and week. I did not know chalk markers existed until this calendar. They are awesome! Soooo much easier than using chalk! And, wow, Owen has loveeed having a calendar. We’ve counted down days, and it has helped him really see the days of the week. Having a calendar of our month has made planning our little ways to celebrate our days so much more fun. And now if I forget what day it is, he totally reminds me. We’ve been celebrating more this month – stopping for a sno cone, exploring new places and going on more nature walks. Owen calls them “our adventures” and when we change the calendar, he gets so excited about coming up with new ideas. I’ve been trying to be more intentional about planning experiences, “adventures,” and less time on stuff.  I will admit October is a difficult time for me because it is my busiest but even if we get outside for a little bit everyday, that will make me happy. Owen has started playing flag football this fall, and that is an adventure all in itself – so much fun to watch him play each Saturday morning after my sessions.

Our Fall Picnic

Goals for October

* Bake a pumpkin pie

* Accomplish our annual trip to Hill Ridge Farms

* Finalize outfits for our own family photos at the end of the month.

* I’ll be in major editing mode this month (along with all the sessions) so definitely my goal, as always, to get galleries out as quickly as possible

* Say thank you more – find little ways to say thank you this month

What are your goals this month or ways you plan to celebrate October?

It didn’t feel like summer should be over the day of this session – it was definitely hot. I have to admit I was super sad knowing it was my last Coastal Session and our last weekend at the beach that we would be able to swim until next year. Owen discovered his love of boogie boarding this year in August and was actually jumping in the pool by himself so I was sad to see these huge accomplishments swept to the side until next year. He was never this huge climber/daredevil child. When some kids are jumping in the pool at two, Owen was perfectly content to walk around with his little boat and play. So, that being said, I was a little heartbroken labor day weekend. This was a farewell to summer weekend that I just wasn’t ready for.

Oh, and not to mention, that when we arrived at the beach that weekend, there was a crowd around the turtle nests that had been roped off all summer. Eighty-four (I think I remember that right) little baby turtles had hatched that Friday, and they let me know on Sunday they would dig up the nest to see if there were anymore. Right before this sweet family arrived for their session, I saw the turtle patrol drive up and camp out on the beach. Soon, there was a crowd, and I was informed that we would have to be off the beach and behind the dunes when they dug up the little turtles. So, there was a little added stress not knowing how long it would take baby turtles to walk down the long beach to the ocean and when we would be released again to take photos. After all of that, when they dug up the nest, all of the turtles had already hatched and so we didn’t have to stop the session at all. (although we were a little sad we didn’t get to see baby turtles) So, if you’ve had a session with me, you know I am super quick and move a lot – just think about how much this put me into traveling at the speed of light hyperdrive. Due to the anticipation of a turtle break, we got soo many photos, and it was so great to meet this sweet family. They also brought some super fun props like a kite and cute hat! This mama and daughter were also one of the winners of the Free Mommy & Me Mini Session, too, so you’ll see them on the blog again soon!

And lastly, speaking of Coastal Sessions, with the Free Holiday Mini Sessions (see more information here) I’ve already started booking Coastal Sessions for next year, so if you are thinking of booking one, contact me ASAP. I am only reserving one spot per holiday. (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) This summer we had to reschedule for Hurricane Arthur so I want to make sure we have plenty of reschedule options with both of our schedules if there was bad weather.

Okay, so I almost always have newborn sessions in the morning. Well, really, I think this may have been the only one I’ve done in the afternoon. (They needed to change their newborn session time last minute so we found an afternoon that would work for both of us) Babies are always just so super happy in the morning that I hate to chance starting a session later in the afternoon. But this little guy, oh he just slept and slept and slept. Isn’t he just so sweet? And their room was just full of light (yay!) I rarely get that much light streaming into a room where I can just stretch out a blanket and photograph the whole blanket. (And you know I love cloudy, rainy day sessions, too but you definitely use smaller spaces on cloudy days) And these two were just so super calm and content as new parents. (I know I was not this calm either time with either baby) I love all of the sweet moments at home we captured. I just love the simplicity and love of sessions at home during the first days.

I’ve heard from a few people about January/February newborn sessions this week. If you are thinking of booking a 2015 newborn session contact me ASAP. I’m really looking forward to the busy fall/spring and already planning some super fun surprises for my 2015 clients.

I first met this sweet family for big brother’s one year session and was so excited when they asked me to photograph their family again for this little one’s newborn portraits. I have seen a lot of changes in Raleigh traffic over the past year (Um – wow! It is A LOT different!) and the morning of this session, 540 was completely closed. Does that really happen? That was the only day I’ve ever heard of 540 being closed. The thought of sitting stuck on a highway for hours stressed me out to no end so thank goodness my husband is so great at maps and directions and he got me out and away from the traffic and I finally arrived at this session. Whew. You can see how giggly and happy big brother was – that first picture of him peeking out the window and laughing has got to be one of my favorites. He is just sooo adorable! (And the image of him playing with his dinosaur – soooo cute) I know I say it all the time but I just love newborn sessions at home in the first two weeks. Yes, everyone’s tired (one reason why it is nice to have the photographer come to your home) but it’s always so sweet to photograph the excitement and love of having a new baby. I’m now booking newborns in January/February so if you are thinking of booking a newborn session, contact me for more information!
