Since baby brother just arrived, I realized I had not blogged their family maternity portraits. These were taken at the very end of the day with just the last bit of light left. This sweet little guy brought his wheelbarrow and had so much fun giggling with his Mommy and Daddy. Oh, and I also got to capture his first moments as a big brother this week. (see here) I got a text early Black Friday morning, and most people know I am up super early, but I was wondering who in the world could the text be from. It was a happy message about baby brother’s arrival, and I got in the car and headed to the hospital.

He had so much fun eating a cupcake and singing Happy Birthday to his little brother (What a cute idea – more images soon!)

The second round of Holiday Minis with Santa was just so much fun. (See the first round here)So much cuteness was captured yesterday morning with Santa. (And lots of milk and cookies, too!) It is always so much fun to watch their reaction to Santa (although some were just not so sure about him)

Hard to believe we only have one more day of minis left – this Saturday at the tree farm. Time is flying by so fast. These have truly been so much fun, and so fun to see all the parents get involved, too! Super fun dance parties, peek a boo, and silly noises. It was also great to hear all of the little one’s lists!

Wow, this Saturday was amazing. It was so fun to see all the little ones reactions to Santa and their sweet little personalities just shine in all of the images. Wes saw so many sweet families Saturday, and we have one more round on December 2nd. (one spot left – contact me for more info! The Free Holiday Minis are free when booking a 2016 session, and you can read more information here. ) The little ones loved the milk and cookies, which you can see below. Some little ones brought their books to read to Santa, and others just giggled and giggled as soon as they saw him. A few weren’t sure just quite what to think, and one little one kept checking out his beard and laughing about it. (way too cute!) It was such a fun day Saturday – thanks to everyone for coming!

This year I realllllly wanted to take the boys to the mountains to pick some apples. They love picking strawberries, blueberries, peaches, and apples, and this year I so badly wanted to take the four hour trip. Planning this in October, my busiest month of the year was a little challenging. Plus, it decided to rain and rain and rain at the beginning of the month. I was beginning to wonder if it was going to happen, and I will admit, I was a little bit heartbroken. I kept watching their website, and they still had apple availability, so during Owen’s weekday fall break from school, we were able to make the quick trip.

I did some research, and there were sooo many great recommendations about SkyTop, (it also made USAToday’s 10 best Apple Orchards) so that’s where we decided to go. We met up with my mom in Greensboro and then drove three hours to the orchard. It took us down 85, and right past Gardner-Webb, where I went to college. (Go Runnin’ Bulldogs) We made it there around 2 in the afternoon I think and were able to get a parking place right in front which was great since we took a few trips to the car, (diaper change, dropped doughnuts off, etc) so that was perfect.

First, when you walk into their store, right at the top of the Mountain, the view is just so pretty. You look out and all you see is apple trees and mountains (love, love, love) They have sooo many different kinds of apples which you can buy in the store, or they are clearly marked on the map and in the orchard where to pick.

The boys took a tractor ride (Harrison was in love) and then they played on the playground for a little while, which was a big hit. After that, we had an apple cider slushie and apple cider doughnut snack. Oh my, those doughnuts were AMAZING. Of course, we bought a couple dozen to take home. Then, the boys fed the ducks, which Owen just thought was hysterical. One duck was running around outside, too, looking for kids to pick him up (and they did) We then tried out the bamboo forest which was really cool but just make sure your little ones don’t run in there, there’s a lot of stumps. We said hello to the goats + sheep, and then went to get our baskets for picking.

I’m not sure what the best advice would be for taking little ones out into the orchard. (It’s on a mountain so this is serious apple picking. We did a lot of climbing up and down hills) It was recommended that we pick pink lady apples since they had a lot of those, which they did, woo-hoo. Plus, Pink Lady is my favorite apple. We pushed Harrison in the stroller for a while and then we just had to leave the stroller, and he did pretty good staying with us the rest of the way. It was a pretty intense workout taking the stroller. I’m not sure if I would wear him in the Ergo or not since he’s such a big kid (probably still would have been just as much of a workout, but if you have little ones smaller than Harrison, I’d probably recommend baby wearing) Next year he’ll probably be better at walking and can handle the hike. You can also stay closer to the front, but we reallly wanted to go to the Pink Lady apples.

The apple trees were just beautiful and FULL of apples. Owen was just.so.happy. He just kept picking apples. They both enjoyed it just so much, and I’m thinking about how we are going to carry them back up the mountain! Ha! (Don’t pick toooo many!) It’s a beautiful orchard and wow, sooo many trees! When we were leaving, Owen said it was the best day ever. (Melt my mama heart) I definitely hope to come back next year – I loved this orchard so much, and the boys just had such a wonderful day.

There are a lot of recommendations on their website if you decide to plan a trip – bring cash, (they don’t take credit cards)  hand sanitizer, quarters to feed the ducks, and really, wear comfortable shoes. You don’t want to be miserable walking up and down the mountain in heels, etc. You can also look at their picking schedule to see what’s available.

We drove about an hour and stayed at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, which is something we’ve never done and were really so excited. It has such a breathtaking mountain view – I had no idea. We got there pretty close to sunset and walked out the back of the lobby to the terrace where all you could see was gorgeous mountains. We also woke up early and headed out for a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway before heading home. It was a quick trip – two days + one night but what great memories made in such a short time.

This was one of those days where it didn’t rain. (yay!!!) And it looks like today will be one of those days, too! Yay for sunshine. Rainy days are always nice to stay in and drink coffee and edit, edit, edit, but it throws off the already busy fall schedule so much. We met early one Saturday morning to photograph this sweet family together, and the weather could not have been more perfect. So far there’s only been one morning where it was just miserably cold for portraits and thankful this morning the weather was nice. Their session was so relaxed – just their family being together. We strolled around a few different spots, and big brother assured me he was a professional at having his photo taken. The three siblings together was just so sweet and baby sister had a blast running around with her siblings.

Oh, and if you haven’t seen the announcement, we are now offering custom wall collections for your portraits. The ordering session will take place in your home and we will design something just for your walls. (see here) Contact the studio for more information.

According to Mom…

Why did you choose this session location? We were looking for a natural backdrop to our portraits that would be both beautiful but not overwhelming.

What is your favorite family activity? Festivals, Canes games, outdoor activities, movies… Our favorite family activity is anything we are doing together.

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one? Adam Hoover – Obsessed with Star Wars
Roxanne Hoover – Compulsive Baker
Dylan Hoover – 12 going on 24
Caiden Hoover – Unhealthy obsession with Legos
Vivian “Muppet” Hoover – Closet dance queen

What was your favorite part of the session? I’m a big fan of nature, so I really enjoyed being outside with my family on a gorgeous morning. As a bonus a herd of deer ran across a field we were near, the kids were excited to see that.

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the shoot and why you chose them. Since I lack fashion sense I made sure to use Little Apple Styles. We quickly chatted about my families preferences and she put together some style guides within my budget that were amazing. I loved that she used brands that we were already customers of (J.Crew, Nordstrom, Gap/BananaRepublic/Old Navy, The Limited).

What props did you bring and why? I brought bubbles, flowers and a blanket in an effort to keep the toddler “busy”. However, she found mother nature far more interesting. 🙂

What are some words of wisdom you have for other families preparing for a session? 1) If you’re concerned about what to wear, use Little Apple Styles
2) You can never anticipate with young kids what will keep them occupied, but know that Becky is fantastic with small kids.
3) Have fun, relax, and enjoy spending time together. The candid moments can be some of the best pictures!

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? I was really concerned about how we were going to get everyone to look good at one time. It was a misplaced worry because Becky captures impromptu and natural moments so well.
