I photographed this sweet little one’s newborn portraits (I rarely have entire newborn sessions outdoors – loved this one!) and he also came to our holiday mini sessions with his big brother in their adorable pajamas. He was so sweet the morning of his three month portraits, and he just smiled away at his Mama. His moose, Mortimer, also came and Parker loooooved him! The super bowl was only a few days after our session, and Parker was ready with his jersey!

According to Mom..

Who was being photographed for the session? Parker – 3 months

Does your little one have any favorite toys? One of Parker’s favorite toys is his pal, Mortimer Moose. Mortimer keeps Parker entertained with his squeaks and rattles.

What were your favorite parts of the session? I simply enjoy how at ease Becky is with everything. It was a nice feeling knowing that Becky was doing her best to capture Parker’s personality. She makes the whole process more relaxing and even enjoyable. Also, her attention to detail is wonderful – whether it’s simple things like baby feet or just mimicking the crazy faces and sounds that I was making, she takes note!

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session. Parker wore a Ralph Lauren striped rugby coverall for his 3 months session. I searched for a comfortable outfit that I considered not “too babyish” and not “too grown up.” All in all, I thought this was a great middle ground. I also had him photographed wearing his Peyton Manning jersey for a few shots – given the timing of the session and well, I’m a huge fan. Needless to say, I’m glad we did as I think the jersey may have been when he gave one of his biggest smiles!

What are some words of wisdom you have for other Mamas preparing for a session? Don’t stress over it. I guarantee that Becky will be able to bring out the best in everyone!

What baby gear has been your favorite during the first year? The rock-n-play sleeper has been great!

Something brought you to my mind today
I thought about the funny ways you make me laugh
And yet I feel like it’s okay to cry with you
Something about just being with you
When I leave I feel like I’ve been near God
And that’s the way it ought to be…

‘Cause you’ve been more than a friend to me
You fight off my enemies
‘Cause you’ve spoken the Truth over my life
And you’ll never know what it means to me
Just to know you’ve been on your knees for me
Oh, you have blessed my life
More than you’ll ever know,

You had faith, when I had none
You prayed God would bring me a brand new song
When I didn’t think I could find the strength to sing
And all the while I’m hoping that I’ll
Do the kind of praying for you that you’ve done for me
And that’s the way it ought to be…

You have carried me
You have taken upon a burden that wasn’t your own
And may the blessing return to you
A hundredfold

This radiant Mama has been a best friend of mine since we were fourteen. I met her and also this bff at the same time and we have been friends for years. It is always such a treat to spend time with both of them, and we got to hang out and celebrate this sweet mama at her shower in the morning before I took her portraits. They have both been such encouragers to me, and I’m so very thankful for the influence they’ve had in my life that has shaped me so much. They are truly gifts. (I might be crying a little bit as I type this post)  They stood by me when I married Michael and both made it to Raleigh for the birth of my first child. I love these two girls so much, and I’m so thankful for them. I was ecstatic when Brooke called to tell me she was pregnant, and loved photographing her maternity portraits.

Just to tell you a little bit about how this day went – we did have the shower early in the morning until about mid day. If you know anything about me, I do not like shooting in bad light. Mid day – like is never going to happen. We had to make it happen this day, and so, let me tell you, we did a lot of hiking until I found a spot I could be happy with. It was probably the least comfortable spot on the whole property, too, but Brooke managed to look radiant and happy. We were covered in all kinds of field debris, and I definitely did not wear hiking or jumping across creek shoes. (yes, we jumped across a creek. I was looking for snakes at all times.) That being said, we laughed a lot and definitely made a memory. And most of all, were able to capture the love these two have for each other and for their sweet baby on the way. (Soooo soon!!! I cannnnnot wait!!!!!!!) And if you know Brooke, she is full of so much joy, laughter + giggles, and I loved that this session captured that about her.

According to Brooke…

What was your favorite part of the session? My favorite part of the seasion was being in the wooded areas. I liked how the brush and trees photographed…the light was lovely!

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? I was about 35 weeks pregnant and felt a tad chubby with my baby bump popping out so far! However, in the photos I felt Becky captured my best angles. (:

Do you have a theme for your nursery? Yes, our nursery has a bright and whimsical bird theme!

How would your describe your perfect Saturday as a family? I love slow mornings where we make a big breakfast and go for a walk around the farm.

How did you meet and where was your first date? We met through a friend and we had a sushi date and afterward we went on a walk and played basketball as it began to snow.

What is your favorite TV Show you watch together? NC State sports

I may mention from time to time my love of being early. And this session location + parking always scares me so I am sure to be super early. Then there is the parking meter issue on a weekday – I can only pay for the exact amount of time I will need, so I can’t leave the car too early. I’m just used to being the first person there, since I really love being overprepared, and it’s only me getting ready vs. getting your whole family dressed and ready for a session.

So imagine to my surprise, when I walked in, (still early) I was told this sweet family was already upstairs dressed. I had already met Janelle at the Holiday Minis, but I then knew we would be bffs. I was so impressed and kind of stunned. This was a session to celebrate baby boy’s first birthday, and so I did try to get a lot of photos with birthday boy! Ericka and Janelle worked together to pick the cutest little one piece outfit for him (loooooveeee!) Ish and Janelle were just so cute together – they laughed and giggled with their boys. Our original date was snowed/iced out a week before, so I was glad we didn’t have to worry about that the day of their session. What a sweet family session this was – be prepared for a ton of images!

According to Mom….

What kind of feel were you thinking for your session? Vintage, urban, modern? Why did you choose that? We were looking for a modern feel for our session. We just remodeled our home to fee more modern and thought this would compliment our new décor.

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one.

Ish (age withheld)-larger than life personality. The party is wherever he is. He is generous, talented and the hardest worker I know….and the best Dad! Lateef (4)-he is his father’s son. Personality for days. Charismatic and sweet. Energetic and passionate. Funny…..
Jett (1)-possibly the sweetest little guy there is. He is patient, happy and smart. Cuddle bug….
Janelle-your typical type A stay at home mom.

What was your favorite part of the session? This was our first family photo session ever! We didn’t know what to expect. We loved how natural it felt and the big space was perfect for our little ones to chase each other around without us having to chase after them! I still can’t believe some of the great shots Becky got even in the moments we felt everyone was falling apart!

What’s your favorite family activity? We love to travel. Anywhere and everywhere.

What was the weather like the day of your session? The weather was cold, windy and a little overcast. We had to reschedule our original date because of a snow storm the previous week.

What was the best part of your session? I loved watching my boys have fun with each other. No ipads. No tv. No toys. Just each other. Playing little games and just laughing at everyone being silly.

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session. We had a dressier look and a more casual look. Mostly because I couldn’t make up my mind on what I wanted to wear. Hahaha. The dressier look was built around a pair of bright floral pants from j.crew I was dying to wear. Ericka from Little Apple Styles had awesome suggestions and presented the coolest idea boards with links directly to the options. Jett wore the sweetest overalls from Janie and Jack and Lateef wore Ralph Lauren top and jeans. Ish was in Banana Republic. The second look was very neutral which is more our style. My look was H&M, Jett and Lateef were in Gap and Ish just removed his jacket. Most of the items we owned but I broke down and bought some new items. Pictures are forever!

What props did you bring and why? We brought Jett’s giraffe lovey and a star hung in his nursery. His first birthday sparked our interest in getting the family pictures taken. The poor little guy didn’t get a birthday party like his older brother. I was feeling guilty and wanted to do something special to celebrate this milestone. I regret not having professional pictures with our older son sooner. Better late than never! Years from now when we look back at these pictures it will be so cool and maybe even funny seeing him with that giraffe.

What are some words of wisdom you have for other families preparing for a session? Bring back up clothes or other options. Something may not work or someone may not be in the mood to wear what you chose for them. Give yourself plenty of time before the shoot to prepare outfits, shoes, accessories, etc. Follow Becky’s blog to get ideas beforehand so you can articulate the end result you hope for. You will not be disappointed!

What’s your favorite family weekend activities? We love to just walk around and find where the day takes us. Museums, discovering Downtown Raleigh, shopping, etc. I love to cook and bake for my family all day on the weekends as well.

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? I was worried about my husband more than the kids. I was afraid he would feel uncomfortable and not know what to do. That is exactly how he felt but it is certainly not how the pictures came across. That is why Becky is the best! She still managed to capture his personality through his discomfort.

After a week of so many fun Valentines posts, I’m excited to share a sweet newborn session.I first met this sweet family at their pregnancy announcement session (even their sweet big brother puppy was there!) I was so excited when I got the e-mail that their sweet baby boy had been born. He was a dream – just so happy to be cozy and content snuggling his Mommy and Daddy during his newborn portraits. This little one loved his hands so he was swaddled up so that we could see his sweet face. His nursery was just so beautiful, and I’m glad that it worked out for us to start the session in his room. His room was just so dreamy, full of light, and perfect for some portraits celebrating his arrival. Such a sweet morning at home photographing this family, and you’ll even see his big brother puppy at the end.The first two weeks at home with your little one can be such a blur – I love photographing these sweet days and creating custom artwork and meaningful memories.

There is no such thing as too many donuts – Mr. Little Apple

If you have been reading me this week – you may think I am slightly consumed with Valentine’s Day. Good news for you, I am an equal opportunity offender as I am the same way with any holiday. I just love any reason for celebrating!

I went to run some errands earlier today and you could tell the Valentine’s aisles where looking very empty… and the Easter stuff was already taking over. No worries guys, flowers and chocolates have been moved right by the cash registers so you do not even have to walk to the back of the store anymore – haha!

This year I am planning in having a fun Valentine’s breakfast for my little family. And since the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, I decided to explore Mr. Little Apple’s favorite spot. He has been talking about Rise for quite some time. I am not a donut lover, so I had not been there until recently. I wanted to check the menu and see what all the fuss was about. Becky and her little ones were coming over that afternoon – so it was the perfect time for an impromptu tasting party.

The Rise store in Morrisville opens at 7 am and closes at 2pm. I arrived there at 1:55pm and the store was pretty full for being almost closing time. The line moved really fast. I thought it was because the employees were ready to go, but I heard from several friends that is a common practice. I am normally very indecisive, but this time I knew exactly what I was looking for. The Maple Bacon donut! Thankfully, there was one left. My special taster said it was fresh and tasted delicious.raleigh styled food photography_0384P I N this to pinterest    I once heard someone saying “It is so good it makes me want to write some poetry” WELL, this is what my 7 year old told me when I asked her if she liked her Cheerwine Iced Donut….

Roses are red

Violets are blue

I like Donuts

Donuts are Good….

It cracked me up! For the record, she did not come up with it. She heard it somewhere – but I found it very self explanatory. It was also Owen’s favorite and he happily volunteered to take pictures holding one – as long as he got to eat more!

So ladies and gentlemen – if you want to surprise your Valentine for breakfast tomorrow, sneak out early and get Rise donuts. I am glad I surprised mine ahead of time since he gave up sweets for lent. I still can’t figure how someone can have that much self control!

*Ericka has been taking over the blog with so much Valentines this week – see more here.
