This little one’s Mama is just so stylish, and she dressed their little one in the cutest gold shoes. Hard to believe she’s already one year old! (See her newborn portraits here, with so many sweet photos of their cat, too! Her mama is also such a talented decorator, and I loved photographing portraits in their home) I love how Lindsay says below that “The session itself is a memory to remember!” It’s so true, a time to have fun with your little one and celebrate the milestone you are documenting.

According to Mom…

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one? Cory, dad – He’s a huge sports fan and is hoping Avery will be interested in sports, too. He’s got a lot of golf skills to teach her and Baltimore Ravens games to watch with her!
Lindsay, mom – I’m a pretty girly girl – always have been. I’m hoping Avery will love dolls, Barbies and cute outfits!
Avery, our little girl – Too early to tell if she’s going to favor her mom or dad’s interests – or have interests all of her own. Right now, we’re just enjoying her learning about the world.

Does your little one have any favorites right now? Her favorite thing right now is probably our cat Twix. She loves chasing her around, laying down on her and petting her. She’s also starting to love to read. She always brings out Brown Bear, Brown Bear – What Do You See? And she pulls “Oh Baby, Go Baby” off the bookshelf every day.

As far as food goes, she would eat chicken nuggets and bananas every day if we let her, and she gets really sad when her yogurt or fruit pouches are done.

Song? She loves music – so much so that she lights up when I sing, which says a lot since I can’t carry a tune!

What was your favorite part of the session? We love working with Becky. She always keeps mom and dad laughing and is so relaxed, even when we’re a bit stressed about getting the right shot. She always has the best settings, props and styling tips that keep us all looking our best.

At our one-year session, Avery was about to lose it and was trying to eat leaves. To keep her happy, we pulled out the Cheerios and ended up having quite a few shots of Avery with Cheerios stuck to her face.

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session. Avery wore a little fall ensemble — a herringbone camel and black-colored dress with black tights — from Janie and Jack. Her grandparents bought her the outfit to wear this Fall, and as soon as I saw it, I knew it’d be perfect for her one-year pictures. Her gold moccasins are from Freshly Picked.

What are some words of wisdom you have for other Mamas preparing for a session? As a perfectionist, I’ve had to tell myself this going into every session – Be flexible. Something won’t go perfectly – especially if you’re shooting with an infant or toddler. They’re not going to pose exactly like you envision. They may burst into tears or rip off the cute headband you picked out. And that’s okay! Becky has this incredible way of capturing the most beautiful, pure moments no matter the circumstance. Trust that the photos are going to come out beautifully, and then relax and have fun with your family. The session itself is a memory to remember!

What have been you favorite baby gear during the first year? For moms who are formula feeding, you have to invest in the Baby Brezza! It is a godsend. It’s a Keurig for baby formula. We’ve adopted a less-is-more mentality toward baby gear at the Wessel house – so anything that’s minimalistic but does the trick is the way we go. And for that reason, we’ve loved the IKEA high chair. It’s only $20 and is everything you need, nothing you don’t.

Do you have any pets, and how do they get along with your little one? I mentioned Twix earlier. (see Twix in their newborn portraits here) Avery is obsessed with her. Twix likes her, too, but she’ll never admit it. She sleeps at the foot of Avery’s crib and hangs out around the bath tub at bath time. She lays in the middle of Avery’s toys. But if Avery comes after her, it doesn’t take long for her to run away. Still, I think it’s a blossoming friendship.

Is everyone getting excited about New Years? I know, after Christmas, I get a little sad that the holiday is over and look forward to another reason to celebrate! If you are throwing a New Year’s bash or looking for ways to celebrate with your little ones, I found some super cute ideas on the web for New Year’s and wanted to share them! I’m so excited about confetti – I just love it! (And if you’re feeling crafty and want to make your own confetti poppers, Oh Lovely Day has a great tutorial here)

  1. Love all of these fun ideas for celebrating with kids from One Good Thing by Jillee. The balloon drop is way too cute, and the glitter shakers, and, well there are so many fun ideas!
  2. A super fun snack – New Year’s Crescent Dippers from Pillsbury.
  3. Love this pretty Tinsel Number Banner from Martha Stewart.
  4. New Year’s Eve Mocktails with gummy bears (so cute!) from Modern Parents Messy Kids.
  5. And for dessert, Macarons at Midnight from Sweet Tooth or these Glittery Oreo treats from 365 Days of Pinterest.

Enjoy the holiday and ringing in 2016!

The weather was absolutely gorgeous the day of their family session, and I’ve been photographing this sweet family ever since their first little one was born. Due to the craziness of how much rain we had this fall, we did have to reschedule their sessions once, but the weather on our rescheduled date was just perfect. These two little ones were just adorable together and so much fun running around the park with their parents. Just love the sunny evening glow, too!

According to Mom..

Why did you choose this session location and what was the weather like the day of your session? Field/to capture a natural background/late evening, sunny

What’s your favorite family activity? Anything outdoors.

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one! Michael- patient, takes care of everyone
April- always laughing
Ethan- adventurous, loves superheroes, awesome smile
Lauren- little Miss Independent, sweet, great hugs

What was your favorite part of the session? We played a lot and were able to capture true family moments

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session! Little Apple Styles helped a lot! I loved being able to send her a few of my thoughts and have Ericka compile profiles AND tell me where I can get each item.

What props did you bring and why? A blanket and some of the kids favorite toys. I wanted to capture some memories of the kids and their favorite toys at this stage.

What are some words of wisdom you have for other families preparing for family photos? Relax and enjoy it. Bring snacks 🙂

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? With outdoor sessions I always worry about the weather. We did reschedule due to rain but the second date ended up being beautiful.

Two years ago day, we got the sweetest Christmas present. raleigh-christmas-tree-farm-photographer_4127P I N this to pinterest

Our little guy was five weeks early, born early Christmas morning, and such a gift he has been to our family. (You can read the story of his birth day here)

At two, he LOVES cars, trucks, and trains. Since he started talking nonstop a year ago, he pretty much talks about cars and trucks all day long. Riding in the car is his favorite because he gets to see all kinds of transportation so carpool is a highlight of his day. His favorite food is steak. He loves watching football on tv and screams anytime it is on.He looooves his big brother, and the two of them together is the sweetest thing. I have loved having two little ones and seeing their daily interactions. It’s really sweet how much Harrison wants to be like his brother and copies everything he does.

Since transportation is his favorite, I knew I wanted his two year portraits to be a mix of his Christmas birthday (a huge thank you to Boyce Farms for letting us use their farm) and an old pedal car. The minute this car showed up at our house, he was in love. He has affectionately referred to it as, “that car,” and is happy just sitting in it and pedaling around. I also had to capture a photo with his “bear bear” because it’s his favorite.Though we didn’t do all of the birthday traditions today, we’ve decided to celebrate his half birthday at the end of June.

While we are busy celebrating Christmas, we are also thankful for this sweet little one and the gift he is to our family. Merry Christmas!

Oh, the second round of Santa Minis were just so special. It was such a calm morning with some little ones REALLY excited to see Santa, and some just not so sure about him. They might happily munch a cookie and wave, but no they were not going to get near him. (Harrison was definitely in the eat and wave crowd, but there was no way he was sitting on Santa’s lap) Owen brought a list for both of them – he cut out pictures and glued his list to the front and some things he would like Harrison to have on the back. It was a really fun morning, and I just died laughing when one sibling was trying to tell on the other one to Santa. Love it! (See Round One of the Santa Minis here)

I hope everyone is finishing up all their last minute Christmas shopping, food shopping, and enjoying making holiday memories. I had to venture out last night, and I think I got the last cart at Target to shop with and one of the last rolls of tape. Throw in the rain, and it’s a zoo out there. Merry Christmas, everyone!
