This is the time of year where I catch up on blogging. The second half of the year gets just so busy and a lot of times blogging gets put to the side so I can just focus on photographing families and editing. I just blogged Harrison’s second birthday, and realized I didn’t have a post all about my sweet Owen’s fifth birthday.

One thing my parents did growing up was that you only had a birthday party on the even years and on the odd years, you had a family birthday. We started that this year and five was going to be just a family celebration. I still wanted to get him a nice cake and balloon, and so I asked him what kind of birthday he wanted, and he instantly said a monorail birthday. His birthday gift was a monorail, he had a super cute monorail cake, a monorail birthday shirt from Swanky Shank, and a few months later I took his five year portraits at Disney. His favorites at 5 include all things Disney, legos, a huge Miles from tomorrowland fan, Star Wars, and is also a huge fan of his little brother. The two of them just love each other, and are such a blessing to Michael and I. (If your little one is a huge Disney fan like Owen, one thing we did do on his actual birthday was go to the Disney store. They put his name on the screen and then play Happy Birthday in the store, sung by the characters. Owen absolutely LOVED it. Harrison however, did not like being the center of attention when we took him a few days after his December 25 birthday)

If you’ve been to Disney, you know that the pixie dust just gets you when you go down there. It was hard to even squeeze in these portraits of him because I was just so excited about all the things we could be doing, right? Plus we kind of had some hiccups that day with our luggage and our dinner reservation so our timeline got a little messed up. It all ended up working out, and we were able to squeeze these in. Ericka from Little Apple Styles was such a big help and more to come later on the big ordeal it was to get these balloons and get them in and out of the park. I think it was a little windy when we photogaphed Owen, and you know, you have to wait for a monorail to come by so that took a little bit of time. It was so much fun celebrating and documenting his year of being five. I’m so thankful for this sweet boy and the joy he brings to us everyday – it’s hard to believe he’s already five and a half.

I love all the details to this session – his Mickey magic band, his happy birthday button, all of his sweet facial expressions..it’s so him at five, and I love it.

Harrison’s Second Birthday Shirt by Swanky Shank

Hello 2016! Another fun year to look forward to. I love looking back at a year’s worth of images, how my kids have changed and grown, their interests, favorite toys, facial expressions, oh all of it. Our little ones are still singing Christmas songs, and I still haven’t taken down the tree yet. Oh, maybe tomorrow. The boys were so excited to celebrate the new year with their cousins.

Goals for January

1.If we have more of these warmer weather days (without rain!!!!!) sit on the porch more, with more coffee.

2.Order the hand lettering book I keep putting off ordering.

3.Start the RKP Image of the Year Contest. (I LOVE this contest every year and seeing what everyone picks! If you aren’t on the newsletter list and are a former client or want more info, sign up here. A lot of great info is going out in our January newsletter today!)

4.Owen LOVES crafts. I think he was more excited about the 1.00 crafts in his stocking then the biggest toy he asked for. I’ve been researching some fun winter crafts to tackle this January which I know will bring so much joy to him.

5.I love planning little adventures with my kids during the year. A lot of them usually revolve around fruit – ha! Strawberry picking, peach picking, apple picking, the Polar Express, our whirlwind Charleston trip, our quick Legoland/Disney trip….I need to look at this year and what we can plan out and tackle. Owen has been asking about fruit picking, which you know, January is just not the time for that!

1.December goes by way too fast. Christmas shop before Thanksgiving next year.

2.Owen is just so brave. He was so excited about his first piano recital and was even determined to play one page by memory. The recital was definitely passed Harrison’s bed time, and he did a little wandering during the performance. (Good thing we found a seat on the front row so everyone could see his wandering, ha!) The two of them may end up in a band together one day – Harrison loves to play with him. I was just so relieved Harrison didn’t climb up there and bang on the piano with him during the recital, which is always a struggle when practicing. (Trying to draw on his piano papers and tearing them up is also a favorite) Owen grinned from ear to ear when he was finished, and even smiled at me while playing (melt my Mama heart!) It was a joy to see how confident and happy he was – I would have been scared to death playing before a lot of people. Oh, and his recital was held at a retirement home, which I just absolutely loved.

3.I really have enjoyed Periscope. If someone has a great broadcast, it is really entertaining while folding laundry – ha! Who’s on periscope?  Who do you like to follow?

4.The Museum of Life and Science in Durham is so much fun in the afternoons. Before kindergarten, I had strict afternoon working hours (plus it was naptime for the kids) Carpool has flipped that a little around so…(anyways, that’s the reason we’ve never been in the afternoon.) Owen had some half days at school, so I picked him up, and we headed out. It was so quiet, the weather was beautiful, and we made some great new friends. The butterfly house is pretty crowded in the mornings, but it was almost completely empty, and the boys loved being able to take their time and look at all the different butterflies. Owen always loves getting one of the information sheets with the types of butterflies, and trying to figure out which ones they are.

5.Holiday minis this year were WONDERFUL. I can’t say thank you enough to everyone who came, had great attitudes, and helped so much with the little ones. So many great memories made and images to go along with them! And thanks so much to Ericka for all her help!

6.I think pretty much any movie can make me cry. (I really was NOT expecting Star Wars to make me tear up) I would tell you which part, but I don’t want to give any spoilers.

7.One of my favorite things is to run outside with the BOB and my boys. Thankful for this great weather lately so Harrison and I can chat on our long walks after my runs. Our neighborhood has some crazy hills, so I finally found a route I can run without ending up on one of the huge hills at the very end. My Fitbit is already telling me my heart rate is crazy by that point – ha! Did anyone get a fitbit for Christmas? If so, add me as a friend so we can challenge each other! I’m not always so great at wearing it, but I try to keep it on. I’ve realized a lot of days I don’t get 10,000 steps unless I do go for a run, so I really need to move more!

8.I tried rocksbox this month, and really loved it! I’ll do a post with what I got this month. Thanks to Ericka and Molly for recommending it! (My referral code is BECKYBFF39 if you decide to sign up! thank you, thank you, thank you!)

9.Owen will be in 4th grade when Harrison starts kindergarten. (um, wow, that is a long time from now!)

10.A Christmas birthday is really just tough, poor guy. We decided we will be celebrating June 25th. (And Owen’s birthday is in June…so yeah, two birthdays!!!!!) He’s getting so big – did you see this video? Everytime he says, “Hi Mommy!” love, love, love him!

11. What I Read in December. December is such a busy month but I managed to read Money-Making Momin one day. I love following Crystal’s blog, and I found it to be a good and easy read. I finished it really quickly, and I think part of that was I had been so busy in December with working and activities, that I was so happy to have a minute to read!

12.Top instagram posts of 2015 –

maternity photography wake forest NCP I N this to pinterest

People Magazine, newborn photography, a lot of Disney + ballet, my boy going to kindergarten and apple picking with my babies. I love that these were my top images of 2015.

13.Rain Bootswas one of the best investments I made this fall. I bought them the weekend we were supposed to get really bad flooding (which did not end up happening and I was scared to death that morning at a newborn session on the other side of the county. If you’ve ever been at a session with me where it has started lightning, etc, you will know that I am NOT a fan of weather and may run to my car so fast that I didn’t even know I could run that fast)

Happy New Year! I’ll be sending out the January newsletter tomorrow with a lot of information about upcoming events! (Sign up here)newborn photography raleigh NCP I N this to pinterest

It’s hard to believe it’s actually been cold this fall with the weather we’ve been having this week, but it was actually pretty chilly the morning of this little one’s one year portraits. He didn’t have a clue though, because he was full of smiles and just so happy to be snuggled by his Mommy and Daddy. I love all of the images of the three of them together – such a sweet session celebrating this one’s birthday. And that light, eeeeeek, I love it! So, so pretty!

According to Mom…

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one! Dimitris, husband: He is Greek – real Greek!
George, son: He loves giving kisses, sound effects and all.

Does your little one have any favorites? George’s favorite food is currently strawberries in the morning. He eats them all, searches the bowl, then reluctantly eats his toast. He loves all types of music but gets especially excited when we play his Greek CDs. He will clap along with the Greek version of “head, shoulders, knees and toes” but isn’t too into the English one yet.

What was your favorite part of the session? It was great working with Becky- she knew exactly how to direct us and she could see things that we certainly could not! She was also great with George and was able to capture his attention. He was so mesmerized by her that he ended up looking more at the camera than at us!

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session and where they were from. George wore clothes from Baby Gap. I loved the elastic waisted corduroy and the shoes. We wanted him to be comfortable and warm. We wore clothes from our closets but all inspired by Ericka from Little Apple Styles’ suggestions. It was great working with her, she instantly understood what we were envisioning. Elise‘s dress (Zara), Dimitris’ shirt and sweater (Ralph Lauren)

What are some words of wisdom you have for other Mamas preparing for a session? Plan clothes and supplies for a variety of temperatures. It was such a cold morning and while I did have the tissues and wipes I couldn’t find his hat that we had packed! Listen to Becky. I was nervous about so many things before we started but Becky did such a wonderful job of directing and guiding all of us. Before I knew it, we were done!

What baby gear has been your favorite during the first year? Ergo 360 – while we don’t use it that often, I’m always so happy with it when we do. I love it because he can sit comfortably when he looks out and then can nap easily when he is turned in. It was great for us when he was a newborn and still is growing with him now.

And white undershirts. They are the one thing I can never buy enough of!
