DB Sutton and Company in Chapel Hill 4_2265P I N this to pinterestA couple of weeks ago, Becky and I met Cara, hair stylist extraordinaire from DB Sutton and Company, at Creatives for a Cause.  She had a fun braid demonstration and spoiled us with some fun hair products so we can braid away in our free time.

We were in love with the fine art of braiding and decided to treat ourselves to some one-on-one time with Cara to celebrate Becky’s birthday.  We met Cara at her hair studio in Chapel Hill and relaxed while she played with our hair.  We joked and laughed the whole time – and looked great in record time!  Becky’s hair is perfect for braids, so I expected hers to look as adorable as it did.  I was concerned about mine – since I have so.much.hair.  I may have needed one or two (okay, maybe like five) extra bobby pins – but the end result was amazing.

We were so excited! Braids, just like the perfect pair of jeans, can be dressed up or dressed down.  While Becky went to a lunch date right after – I rocked mine at carpool and got so many compliments.  Surprisingly mine was intact for a couple of days, so definitely worth the investment.

Intricate braids and chignons took center stage at the New York Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2016 shows – so you know they are going to be ‘hot’ (no pun intended) this summer.

Oh, and one of the most wonderful things about DB Sutton and Company is online booking (see here) We definitely used it to book our braids.

This big brother was absolutely adddoooorable at our Free Santa Minis last year (see here! the cutest!) This session kind of flew by..From the moment I got there, big brother was just so much fun and loved kissing his baby brother. It was so sweet to see all four of them together. (see big brother’s newborn portraits here) Love, love, love this newborn session at home. Love what this Mama has to say about newborn sessions – great advice!

According to Mom…

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? He’s here, he’s okay, and he’s perfect!

What was your favorite part of our session together? I loved how easy and comfortable it all was. My favorite part was how Becky was able to capture some really fun playful moments with my toddler and some sweet faces from my newborn. It was wonderful having it at home because I didn’t have to worry about getting out of the house to go somewhere with 2 littles. I also loved being home because the pictures captured our life and we will always be able to look back on them and remember this time where we brought our children home.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? I made sure baby was fed and had a clean diaper.

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous before? My experience was wonderful. I was a little nervous because I wasn’t sure how my baby would do and I have a 2 year old as well and I was worried he would be bored. Becky is so great with kids though so she really helped entertain my 2 year old and when my little one needed to eat she was great about stopping and entertaining the older one so I could feed the baby. She made me feel very comfortable about doing whatever I needed to do to keep everybody happy.

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? Relax and enjoy the photos. Don’t let this be a stressful thing to get ready for, and feed the baby before the session.

Do you have any other children? How did they react to the baby? Yes, I have a 2 year old son. He LOVES the baby. When we get him up from bedtime or naptime the first thing he wants to do is check on his brother. He always let’s me know when the baby is crying and if he loses his paci he lets me know that too. He loves to hold his foot, kiss his head, and give him hugs.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? We like to have a special breakfast together like pancakes or waffles. Then we usually go to a park or storytime at the library before nap time. After nap we just like to spend time playing outside or going for a walk.

What a fun session this was on the UNC Chapel Hill campus celebrating four years + graduation! We had absolutely gorgeous weather the evening we met at the Old Well. It was a weekday early in April but it was still super crowded with graduates also having portraits taken. So we started at the well, and then came back when it was slightly less crowded and got some more portraits with the beautiful azaleas. Oh, the azaleas were just so beautiful! I had no idea they were so pretty surrounding the Old Well, and we tried to time their session when they would be blooming. We took portraits with her Mama, love the portraits that show the bond and friendship they have, and also a few with her fiancee. So I’m way oversharing because I loved sooo many from this session + loved meeting this sweet family.

I first met big sister at our annual holiday minis (see here) So much cuteness! She was just so excited to show me her baby sister, and love, love, love the images we got of the two of them together. This little one’s newborn portraits with her Mommy and sister were just so sweet. And, oh my, her natural highlights in her hair were just so pretty!

According to Mom…

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? I was overcome with joy and happiness. She was the most beautiful baby and I couldn’t believe how much she looked like my other daughter Audrey. I was also surprised to see that she had blonde highlights in her hair! I have basically black hair so that was quite a shock. We had waited a while for Penelope to join our family, so I couldn’t believe the day had actually arrived!

What was your favorite part of having a newborn session at home? It’s great to have a newborn session at home because not only is it convenient (no packing up a newborn and other family members) but it’s also comfortable. You have everything you need and it’s especially nice for older kids to have somewhere to go and play when they aren’t in the pictures.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? I made sure to feed her before it started so she was full and happy. She didn’t fall back to sleep right after but Becky waited for me to get her back to sleep before we started.

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Penelope is my second so I knew the drill. I was more worried about how my 4 year old would act. She can be hyper or shy, you never know what you’re gonna get these days. It turns out she was excited and very talkative. Becky was great with her and she was able to capture her natural beauty which is hard for me to get. I am so happy to have these beautiful images of the two girls together. They show how much Audrey already loves her little sister, and I will cherish them forever.

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? Plan out what you’d like to wear prior to having the baby, if you can! After the baby comes the last thing you want to do is run out to the mall!

Was there a sentimental item in your nursery or parts of your nursery that we photographed that are special to you? We are in a rental until we move into our new house later this month, so I was worried about the color of our walls and actually sad that the nursery would not be in the pictures. It turns out it was not worth worrying about those things because the pictures turned out great without the background being the focus.

Do you have any other children? How did they react to the baby? Our daughter Audrey is 4 so naturally she was super excited about having a baby sister. She loves her and wants to hold her all the time. She is also fascinated with diaper changes (weird, right?) and she wants to stand by the changing table and supervise every one.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? We love laying low and hanging as a family. We usually plan one Saturday outing to get out of the house and explore the area (we are fairly new to Raleigh). Our favorite thing to do is try new restaurants.

Any advice to other families picking our wardrobe or preparing for a session? Again, plan your outfits in advance. There have been times when I’ve waited until the night before and that has proved disastrous!

Creatives for a Cause

Article by Ericka of Little Apple Styles

About a month ago, Becky and I attended Creatives for a Cause, Raleigh.  This event is organized by Molly Dansby from Ply Fine Paper.  The event not only promised a braid bar, a chalk lettering workshop, a flower crown workshop and an original pastel artwork – but also sweets and drinks were included.  EEEEK!!  One hundred percent of the ticket cost was going to the N.C. Children’s Hospital – so I was immediately sold!

I do not go out much, by choice, so I may have over thought the outfit I was going to wear a little too much.  I kind of knew many creatives in the industry will be present – so I needed to play the part. Ha!  After changing many times, I ended up wearing my first and most comfortable set.  Which I am glad I did, because I needed the room in my pants after eating the delicious sweets from Sugar Euphoria.

The braid workshop was so much fun!  While I already knew how to braid, I really never thought much of it until Cara demonstrated her techniques, and shared her secrets.  I even got a braid that lasted several days. My poor Eva has been my guinea pig since then, and I can proudly say I have finally mastered the crown braid!  #momgoals

My new passion?  Chalk Lettering!  Maghon from All She Wrote Notes is not only super talented but so fun.  After her workshop I felt I could conquer the world one chalk at a time…haha.  Now imagine how I would have felt if I had taken a whole class!  When I got home, I was surprised by how supportive Mr. Little Apple is with my new found interest.  He later confessed he was just excited for once I stopped talking about chickens.

Making a flower crown was also super fun and so many pretty flowers from Flour & Flower. We took selfies with our flower crowns and also spent some time learning oil pastels from Lisa Gaither art. (you do not want to see Becky’s…it did not look like a poppy like it was supposed to)

This event was so much fun – and inspiring.  Becky and I got a much needed girly time and brain stormed new ideas for upcoming sessions and blog posts!  A win-win for sure:)
