This was the coldest morning so far I’ve had for family portraits. (And the steam on the water was just so pretty) We’ve had a really great warm fall, but this morning it was just chilly for this little one’s one year portraits. I’ve loved photographing his newborn, six months, and now a year. His parents just dress him so adorable, (love that french sweater – so much cuteness) and his sweet grandma has been here all the way from France for every session. It was just so special for his one year portraits that is aunts and uncles and grandparents came all the way from France to celebrate this little one. (and warm him up, and his daddy may have ran around with him to keep him warm and happy. too!) I know everyone arrives a little nervous to photo sessions, but I love how even though it was cold and little man wasn’t too happy about that, this sweet family had a great time, giggled, ran around with him, and we were able to capture some adorable portraits of this little one. They always have so much fun at their sessions.

According to Mom…

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one? Nicolas – originally from France

Karyn– works as a Speech-Language Pathologist with preschool and school-aged children

Alexandre- just turned 1 in October, loves cuddles, baths, and throwing anything he can get his hands on!

Does your little one have any favorites? book, song, etc? Alexandre loves any breakfast foods, his favorites being bananas, oatmeal, waffles, and scrambled eggs. His favorite books are in French, and he loves the ones that are interactive with buttons that make sounds or play songs.

What was your favorite part of the session? My favorite part of the session was when Nicolas was running around with Alexandre in his arms to keep him in a good mood and smiling! It was also great to have Nicolas’ family (visiting from France) with us during the session!

What are some words of wisdom you have for other Mamas preparing for a session? Make sure to bring some fun interactive toys that your child loves. They are great for getting little one to look at the camera!

What baby gear has been your favorite during the first year? Love the halo sleep sacks, bibs with snaps (instead of velcro), the ErgoBaby 360 baby carrier, and the Cloud B sleep sheep!

This mama is such a great friend to me, and I’m so blessed to know her. She has such a kind heart, and dropped food at my house this month during Harrison’s many ear infections. (which he is slightly congested today so I”m worried we will be back at the doctor this week with another ear infection.) Ok, so what was I talking about? Oh yeah, we have a neighborhood park where we have the best neighbors and all spend a lot of time chatting, and this is how we met. I barely met anyone before I had Owen, and now I’m so thankful to know so many of my neighbors.

Of course, their first session date was rescheduled due to rain. I’m thinking if you’ve had a session on your original date this fall, it’s a miracle. (I just rescheduled Saturday, Today and tomorrow’s session. ahhhhh!) We had great weather the day of their session and took photos indoors and out. These kids are all so sweet together and have such a special bond. I love that we captured the love that this family has for each other during this session.

Why did you choose this session location? My family truly loves downtown Raleigh. So happy you chose the perfect spot DTR. Part of what makes you great is that you sense what I want before I even know it and also that you know secret awesome spots around the triangle.

What’s your favorite family activity? We love playing soccer, going out to dinner as a family, playing games and going to museums.

Who are the members of your family and tell me a quick fact about each one.

Matt kind and hardworking, gives his all to parenting his kids, helping with youth group at church, scout camping trips, assisting soccer teams etc

Riley- independent and strong and headed out of the nest

Chase- soccer player, disciplined and fun at the same time

Scarlett- nurturing and creative, bookworm

Win- soccer player, loves to race anyone who dares, deep thinker

Kat- feisty, precocious and so very loved

What were your favorite parts of the session? Loved having the kids playing music and just enjoying themselves.  Loved that you captured sweet candid moments. I absolutely love the shot where Kat is studying Scarlett’s necklace and Scarlett is holding lipgloss- just a feminine sweet sister moment and the one where Scarlett is swinging Kat. We just had so much fun!

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session. I didn’t buy a single accessory or item of clothing. The stylist was great at helping me pull together items I already had and we felt comfortable just wearing the clothes we always wear. Next time though I am going to splurge On a few new things for sure.

What are some words of wisdom you have for other families preparing for a session? I wish I bought a few new items of clothing. Glad we all had fresh haircuts.

Advice don’t stress and just enjoy spending time with your family while becky works her magic

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand?

Just clothing and getting us there.

You are gifted at capturing light and natural expressions. Every photo shoot we have done with you has become a great memory. We just have fun together and you capture it all to keep forever. Thank you!!!

I got to meet these three beautiful girls at the Halloween Minis, so we had already met before the day of their session. Their mama dressed them beautifully, and they were just so much fun to photograph. The light that evening was gorgeous. With all the rain this month, beautiful light has been few and far between. We had a lot of fun laughing and walking all over the park for some fun photos of the three of them.

According to Mom…

Why did you choose this location and what was the weather like the day of your session? Joyner Park! I chose this location because my daughter Megan has always wanted outdoor ballet photos taken. She asked to have her room redecorated for Christmas and wanted a rustic theme, so I thought this would be the ideal. I can’t wait to see how her ballet photos will look on her walls along side her new reclaimed wood headboard.

I also chose this location because some of my favorite photos of my two older daughters Megan and Ellie, now 12 and 11, were taken there years ago(about 8 years ago) in cowboy boots and cowgirl hats. I wanted to recreate those pictures with our third daughter Riley, now 4.

What’s your favorite family activity? We love going to Wrightsville Beach together!

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one? Kevin (Dad) Golf fanatic!!
Jen (Mom) Mom taxi driver, loves to shop and decorate
Megan, age 12, ballet dancer at Raleigh School of Ballet, dancing with the Carolina Ballet as Clara for the second year
Ellie, age 11, cheerleader on the Red Wolves Team at Youngs Gym for the Wake Forest All Stars
Riley, age 4, takes gymnastics at Young’s gym, very patient sister who spends 7 days a week being driven all over Wake Forest and Raleigh as a passenger to her sister’s activities

What were your favorite parts of the session? I enjoyed how relaxed and fun the session was. The planning is so stressful (when to fit a session into your family’s busy schedule, what to wear, will the weather be ok, what kind of mood will my kids be in, will their smiles look natural or staged, will one of the photos make the perfect Christmas card, the list goes on and on). All these worries dissolved when the session started. Becky is so sweet and honestly just wants to have fun! My kids fed off her energy and forgot that this was a chore and something that Mom “makes” them go through every year. My 4 year old got in the car after the session was over and said “Mom, that was so much fun!!!” Enough said!!!

Tell me about the outfits you bought for the session. I love the denim and cowboy boots theme. I Tried to make each outfit just a little different by adding an accessory that matched their personalities. The oldest and youngest’s dresses came from Old Navy, middle daughter from Wrangler. I wanted to add a splash of winter white to each of the girls’ outfits that matched their personalities. Megan, my oldest is my most “proper” daughter…12 going on 21. I thought a scarf suited her personality (got that from Target!!). My middle daughter isn’t the dress type, so I went with a denim tunic and put some winter white cords under it (Gap). I thought my youngest needed something girlie. Going with the rustic theme, I ordered a custom belt made of burlap flowers on a burlap sash. The cowgirl hat that Riley wore in a few of the photos was the hat that the older girls wore about 8 years ago in the photos that I discussed earlier (the reason I wanted to recreate this session at Joyner Park)

What props did you bring and why? Megan my ballerina, she wore and old pair of pointe shoes, practice tutu, and a coral colored leotard (the redecorated room that she is asking for for Christmas will have a rustic theme with coral and teal accents)
Ellie my cheerleader wore her Wake Forest All Stars competition uniform and bow
Riley, I brought the cowgirl hat from my favorite pictures of her older sister’s from 8 years ago

What are some words of wisdom you have for other families preparing for a session? Try not to overplan. As much as you want the outfits to coordinate, the reality is that many of the pictures, in particular for me, one of my favorites, you can’t see any of the items that I so thoughtfully planned (the scarf on my older daughter, the belt on my younger daughter or the pants on my middle daughter). You can leave the house with the “perfect” hair, but if the wind is blowing the wrong way, your middle daughter might look like she has the Donald Trump “comb over” (you know you were thinking that when editing the very first few pictures Becky, right?!?! All these things are completely out of your control on that day. Just have fun, and know that there is a glass of wine waiting for you at home when the session is over!!

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? I was actually not worried about any parts of the actual session! Becky came highly recommended by a friend so I wasn’t worried about her photography skills in the least! I went into the session saying to myself, “if I can get just one “perfect” picture of my three girls together than I’ll be thrilled!!”

I was thrilled when this mama contacted me about photographing their newborn portraits, and how sweet to photograph just the two of them together before baby number four arrived. (She’s here now and I get to meet her soon!) This mama just looked stunning, and the light was just gorgeous. Can’t wait to photograph the whole family together with their new baby sister!

According to Mom…

How did you meet and where was your first date? We met in NYC the summer before our senior year in college. He was interning in the financial district and I was interning in the World Trade Center. We would often meet for lunch in the courtyard of the World Trade Center. Our first official date though was going to watch Notting Hill.

Do you have any other little ones? In addition to sweet Rosie, we have 2 boys, 1 little girl and a maltese.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? A perfect Saturday as a family would be one that didn’t involve any sports games or birthday parties…which is very rare these days. We would eat a big pancake breakfast, maybe watch a fun movie in the theater and then go to the park or a for a long walk. I love spending time outside with my kiddos and hubby when the weather’s beautiful.

What is your favorite tv show you watch together? Currently, The Walking Dead.

What was your favorite part of the session? Our favorite part was the beautiful light at sunset and the white fence.

Oh, all the little ones were just so adorable in their costumes, I know they are going to have so much fun trick-or-treating Saturday night. Little Apple Styles put so much time and thought in these, and the kids LOVVVVED playing with the little pumpkin stand. It was so much fun for them, too! We also have a little contest for everyone who participated at the bottom of the page, so don’t forget to scroll down and vote! So much cuteness!
