When I showed up, this sweet family four was finishing up breakfast, so I captured a few photos before starting the session. When I look back at images I’ve taken of my boys a year later, those everyday moments like sitting at the kitchen table or playing with a certain toy mean so much to me..so if siblings start playing in their rooms or I can capture an everyday moment at a newborn session, I do! After she was fed, this big sister was ready for some snuggles with her baby brother. (Did you see their photos at the hospital here?) She has been in love with him from the minute she met him + it was oh so sweet to photograph all of them together. I love the photos of all four them – so much joy + giggles! Oh, and make sure you see his musical nursery + the photo with his daddy’s guitar. I have been so blessed to meet this sweet mama (read her blog here) and her family.

According to Mom…

1.What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? Seeing my son for the first time was an amazing experience for a number of reasons. First, I had a repeat c-section due to complications from my first pregnancy and complications during this pregnancy and most of the time, c-sections mamas are not able to have the birth experience that others experience with a vaginal birth. However, our hospital is moving towards a more “gentle cesarean” approach and so I was able to have a clear drape in front of me so I could watch my son being born. It was way less gorey or scary than it sounds… it was truly amazing! Second, my husband and I waited to find out the gender of this baby and, while everyone predicted we were having a boy, it was so amazing to see him be born and see that he was, in fact, a boy! It was a moment I’ll never forget.

What was your favorite part of our session? Having our newborn session at home was wonderful. Even though I was only a week post-op and not moving around very well yet, everything still felt so easy, laid back, and relaxed. Even my husband (who doesn’t love getting his “picture made”) commented on how relaxed it was. Watching our daughter hold our son for photos just made this mama heart burst. Becky made us feel SO comfortable and confident. I wish all photo sessions were like this!

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? Honestly, I just made sure he was fed and changed… for me, it was more about preparing our daughter, our dogs, and my husband for the shoot. Haha!!

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous before? I wasn’t nervous at all because I knew Becky would do a phenomenal job… and boy, did she! Becky is SO confident and commanding (in the right way!) behind the camera and we never felt uneasy, unsure, or uncomfortable. I love how Becky just encourages her clients to be themselves and I love how she made us feel as though we were doing the exact right thing!

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? Just breathe, relax, and enjoy this time. This is such a precious moment in your life and your baby’s life… don’t stress yourself out too much about it and lose the ability to just treasure time with your sweet baby while he / she is so sweet and tiny.

Did you have a sentimental item at our shoot? I did. My mom passed away when I was in high school and one of the only things I have of hers that she made when she was pregnant with me is a little sign that says “We <3 Embry.” My parents didn’t find out if I was a boy or girl while they were pregnant with me, and so they called me “Embry” while I was in my mom’s belly. I’ve kept that sign through both pregnancies and used it as a focal point during labor and also had it hanging in our room next to ultrasound photos. It’s so special to me.

Was there a sentimental item in your nursery or parts of your nursery that we photographed that were special to you? The records that are hanging on the wall of my son’s room were actually my mom’s records. The original Beatles’ “Abbey Road” record, Jimi Hendricks, the Moody Blues… some of her favorites. It’s like there’s a little bit of her in the room.

Do you have any other children? How did they react to the baby? We do! We have a 2.5 year old daughter named Lilly and she is just in love with her baby brother.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? Honestly, we are simple. We love just a morning at home, taking a walk, or going to the museum or something like that. Then maybe grabbing lunch out as a family… we just love spending time together. Our lives can get so crazy, it’s nice to take the weekends to just slow down and enjoy each other

Any advice to other families picking out wardrobe or preparing for family portraits? Keep it simple! Especially for mom… darker colors will hide that post baby-bump… and wear a fabulous pair of earrings or a great necklace to make you feel super confident!

This was such a sweet day – I was up bright and early to photograph these two sweet siblings meeting, and also find out if they were having a boy or a girl! This Mama (read her blog here!) and I planned that I would arrive while she was in surgery, so I could capture Dad coming out to tell the family if their sweet baby was a boy or girl. We then went to the recovery room for some photos of the siblings meeting. After a few minutes, the grandparents, full of joy, came to meet this sweet baby boy. It was a beautiful morning, hard not to tear up + cry myself, or cry when editing or making the video. I could go on and on about this day, but you can also read the whole story by Molly herself here.  I love, love, love photographs in the hospital..they are just so precious!

I am not going to post every single one. I want to – ha. Just watch the video at the end.

Ever since my first child was born, I have really struggled with my sinuses. I could probably be one of those weather predictors with my sinuses – ha. If a sinus headache starts, I know the weather’s going to be bad. I did go see an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor after Owen was born, and they did a CAT scan. I officially have sinus problems.

I was really excited when I learned about the klēn shower steamers. They have worked wonders for my sinuses + I have loved them. You put them in the floor when you take a shower, and they steam and open up your sinuses. Happy is my absolute favorite, and they have made such a difference in my sinuses. Immediate relief. Like, I love, love, love them.

I also tried their bath salts, candle, and lotion, and I would recommend all of them. I am super picky about candles, and love that their candles are all natural. Best of all, they are a local business, and I love shopping local. If you decide to try them out, click here and use the code Keller for 15% off, and let me know what you think. (Happy is my favorite shower steamer. Oh, and I didn’t get paid for this blog post, I was just so excited to find something that helps with my sinuses and wanted to share in case anyone else is in the same boat!) They are all natural products with carefully sourced ingredients. They also have a great lip gloss that’s safe enough if your child decides to eat it. (See the story here)

What a sweet six month session this was.He was just so adorable and happy for his six month portraits. Giggling with his Mommy and smiling away. His mama also wanted to capture him eating his toes, which we got some adorable photos of this! Love, love, love the sweet images of him with his Mommy. So great to see these two after photographing his newborn portraits, and he also came to our Valentine Minis.

According to Mom…

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session. For Miles I wanted something soft that would give a baby feel. His outfits were from Gap.

I have loved how prepared this Mama is for her photo sessions. (See her maternity portraits here) She knew exactly what she wanted and had some pretty outfits for both sessions. Such a sweet family – I loved photographing their baby girl’s newborn portraits. So many sweet images from this session! Oh, and I just loved the frame print they had in her room, “Darling, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, forever and ever.”

According to Mom…

What’s the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? She’s finally here! I spent 33hrs in delivery room so, you can only imagine the relief, joy and love pouring out from my heart.

What was your favorite part of our session? We are a military family and having my husband by my side to help with baby meant the world.

How did you prepare the baby for our photo shoot? We were prepared but didn’t have a whole lot of time to put the final touch to our baby’s room because my husband was juggling taking care of mommy and baby after we came home from the hospital.

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? I was nervous because I felt unprepared, I thought everything would be organized in time. My husband just came home from an overseas tour and a day later my water broke. I experienced a few minor complications in the delivery room. Baby girl’s room wasn’t quite ready and mommy was still recovering. However, after seeing the photos we loved it all! Becky was amazing and made the experience worth it. She has a passion and talent for what she does and it clearly shows in the photos.

What would be your advice to someone having newborn photographs taken? Have your babies outfits and props ready and if its just mommy and daddy ask for help from friends and family.

Was there are sentimental item in your nursery or parts of your nursery that we photographed that were special to you? The part of taking our first family photo together.

Any advice to other families picking our wardrobe or planning their family portraits? Be prepared. Have your outfits set aside and babies props and outfits as well.
