They Might Have Broken A Record

This big brother, as sweet as he could be, was just a magnet to his baby brother. I promise you that every newborn session is a little bit of chaos. I’m sure this Mama felt like it was a whirlwind and we didn’t get any photos..but they probably broke a record with all the sweet family images. (One family photo with a toddler is a miracle) Big brother was just so giggly + happy and loved being close to his brother. And OH MY GOODNESS, the cat. Like serious cuteness.

According to Mom..

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? He’s so tiny! Our first was 9lb9oz, and Kian was 7lb5oz – so he looked teeny tiny and so fragile!

What was your favorite part of our session together? It was fun to see big brother Cyrus be so proud to show off his little brother and play with you! It also got me out of my pj’s and into “real” clothes for the first time in a while… which was a good thing.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? Didn’t have to do anything – he was the easiest one to prepare.

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous before? It was great! I was worried he may not cooperate, but it ended up being really easy because the poses were very natural. After seeing what you could do with a very active toddler during our maternity shoot – I was not worried at all about the shoot with the newborn!

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? Don’t stress about it. Maybe plan your outfit before baby comes, because after baby arrives, you may not have time.

Was there a sentimental item in your nursery that we photographed? The nursery is special because Kian is inheriting it from his big brother – so the whole room has a lot of memories from his big brother. Many nights have been spent rocking, cuddling in the grey rocking chair, and we look forward to many more with Kian.

Do you have any other children? How did they react to the baby? Any cute stories to share? Kian has a big brother – Cyrus. He loves the new baby, but is still learning to be gentle. I have told him that when Kian needs to eat and sleep so he can get bigger and bigger – and then they will be able to play together. So for a couple days – Cyrus would come into our room in the morning where the baby was sleeping and peek into his bed – and then ask me “bigger and bigger? Play trucks?” So I’ve had to explain that it’s going to take a little while longer for Kian to be big enough! But Cyrus keeps checking!

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? SLEEP – just sleep. That would be perfect.

Any advice to other families picking our wardrobe or preparing for portraits? Find something your toddler will wear – you don’t want that battle when you’re juggling a new baby and getting ready for the photos.

Raleigh In Home Newborn Photographer Surprise!

It was so fun to finally meet their sweet baby girl. Their puppy was just so sweet at their maternity portraits (see here) so it was just the sweetest thing to see all four of them together. It was a quiet, calm morning at home, and we were even able to take a few photos outdoors. So fun that they waited to find out what they were having, too! Loved meeting this family and getting to meet their sweet baby girl! (And did you see they already had maternity portraits printed in their nursery! So fun to see!)

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? I can’t believe we have a girl! We waited to find out what we were having so it was a surprise up until the moment she arrived. Our doctor was fabulous and told the medical team in the delivery room that Dad would be the one to see first and make the announcement of whether it was a boy or girl. It was a really special way to celebrate this! Because we waited, it made it such a fun experience for everyone – including the doctor and nurses! I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so amazing before! What a sweet, wonderful gift!

What was your favorite part of our session together? My favorite part was being able to do this at home – at a time when you’re trying to figure it all out and get to know each other! There’s no pressure on having it all together and that makes it a great time! It’s so helpful to have a photographer who understands where you are and is patient and easygoing for these moments.

How did you prepare the baby for our photo shoot? We asked for an extra set of hands that day to help take care of our baby while I got ready. My mom came to help which left me time to shower, dry hair and put on makeup – I wouldn’t have thought this possible for a new mom with a two week old baby! And I enjoyed every second of it!

I dressed our baby before getting ready and swaddled her for a little bit to keep her calm. We timed the feeding to be done just as Becky got here so a simple change of top was the last detail. Our baby slept really well for the entire session which worked out better than planned!

How was your experience having your newborn photgraphed? Were you nervous or worried beforehand? I was nervous before the shoot because she was only two weeks old. At this stage, every day is different and you have to go with the flow. Becky encouraged us by planning additional time and taking photos throughout to capture edition all moments. Her support is really helpful for a new mom and I cannot say enough about her patience and calm demeanor through the the morning!

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? Being at home is such a nice option. If you or your baby need anything, you have the opportunity to grab it or take a few minutes to take care of baby. This was huge for me as a first time mom – in your comfort zone, with your family, and on your time frame.

Did you have a sentimental item at our session? What was it and why was it special to you? We used a beautiful blanket that my grandmother crocheted in a soft pink/peach tone. I grew up with only one grandparent and she always had these blankets in her house and as gifts for her family and friends. We laugh about waking up at her house in the middle of the night because we were so hot – and would find ourselves in these blankets! I don’t think she slept when we stayed with her because she was up all night checking on us and adding blankets!

The photos with this blanket are my favorites because of the colors and textures. This is a very special memory to be able to share with our daughter one day.

Was there a sentimental item in your nursery that we photographed? There’s a nightlight on the bedside table that was photographed. It has a sweet verse on it to let our daughter know that God created everything but, most importantly, her! We truly feel this way and prayed for this child along the way. The nightlight was a gift from the couple that cared for me starting at 6 weeks old when my mother returned to work. I love that they are a part of her nursery and “lighting” the way like they did for me!

Any advice to other families picking our wardrobe or preparing for a session? Ericka was so helpful and I love that she works with your preferences and wardrobe! We communicated a couple of times before and even shared a Pinterest board so she could get a feel for our styles/tastes! She knew our preferred stores and guided us with options that we had. This was great as I didn’t have to shop at the end of my pregnancy or while having just arrived at home with a newborn!

Raleigh Train Themed Birthday Photography

We met bright and early one Saturday morning to celebrate this little one turning two. It was unsure when it was going to rain that day but thankfully the forecast ended up being later in the day and we were able to have a great morning at the park. (It even inspired me to take my little ones back a little later, before the rain) This little one was so giggly and adorable and had so much energy running here and there. (See behind the scenes here) Such a fun morning capturing some family portraits of these three!

What kind of feel did you want for your session, and what made you choose that? The main thing I wanted to capture in this photo session is the fun-spirited and lively personality of our son, Jameson. He’s such a joy to be around – he makes everyone smile! I really think Becky did a great job of providing the perfect setting for him to have fun and be himself. He loves anything with wheels or wings right now, especially trains, so Pullen Park was exactly what I was picturing for his 2-year portraits.

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one!

Jameson – A two-year old who loves planes, trains and automobiles! And shapes, and animals, and colors and Mickey Mouse… and the list goes on:)
Megan – A working mom of an energetic two-year old who loves animals, good food and spending time with her family.
Josh – A wonderful and hard-working husband who loves sports, hanging out with friends and family and bar-b-quing on the weekends.

What were your favorite parts of the session? My favorite part of the session was seeing all of my ideas come to fruition. I knew that I wanted some pictures of Jameson in his custom conductor hat and red suspenders, and the red caboose at the park was the absolute perfect back drop. Jameson loved being on the train, and seeing the trains drive by on the tracks! I also just loved having fun with my husband and son, running around the park and being silly!

What’s your favorite family activity? Going to the airport park with Jameson (he LOVES seeing the airplanes take off and land!), or just hanging out at the house and having impromptu Saturday morning dance parties!

What was the weather like the day of your session? I was worried that it was going to be really hot (it was in July!!), but it wasn’t too terribly hot yet at the time of the shoot. It was also not too sunny, so we had great lighting!

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session – why you chose them, etc. I got Jameson’s custom conductor hat from Etsy for the train themed pictures, and the suspenders and red Converse sneakers on Amazon. The outfit was inspired by Ericka from Little Apple Styles, as she did something very similar for her son. It was so simple and adorable – exactly what I was looking for! Then I chose some corresponding outfits for Jameson, Josh and me for the non-themed pictures that had my favorite color (turquoise) and whites and blues, to capture a crisp and clean feeling. I think they worked really well together without looking too matchy.

What are some words of wisdom you have for other families preparing for a session? Try to have fun!!! It’s hard not to stress about the weather, outfit mishaps or anything else that might go wrong, but just try to relax and have a good time so that comes through in your photos.

A Pop of Color | Raleigh Outdoor Maternity Photos

We had a perfect light filled evening for their maternity mini session. This mama to be was just stunning in her bright blue that really stood out – so pretty. Read all about what she has to say about her maternity portraits + can’t wait to meet their sweet baby soon!

What was your favorite part of the session? My favorite part of the session was when my hubby was told to do a “sneak attack” on me for some photos. It definitely made me laugh hysterically and we got some of our most candid shots then with genuine smiles from both of us.

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? Any advice to others planning for their session? I was most worried about what outfit I would wear! I will definitely be using the style services offered through Becky for my next photo shoot with her, as this will help ease a lot of the anxiety of picking out just the right outfit.

Do you have a theme for your nursery? What has been the most fun part of shopping for your baby? We don’t have a specific theme for our nursery other than a color scheme of light gray and baby blue. I have loved purchasing customized orders from Etsy that are made specifically for my little bun in the oven! It has made each of these items feel special. My husband has loved picking out an excessive amount of really cute and soft stuffed animals for the baby as well.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? A perfect Saturday would entail having a relaxing and tasty breakfast at one of our favorite breakfast spots, followed by a nice leisurely walk around outside. In the afternoon, I would love playing around simultaneously with our dog, Tux, and the baby to get in some good laughs and ending the day by making a home-made dinner, followed by watching a movie on the couch.

How did you meet, and where was your first date? Rey and I met as freshman in college. Our first date was a casual meet-up in the school rec center to grab a meal together, which consisted of Burger King and purchased by my husband on his meal plan points!

Do you have any pets or other little ones? Tux is our rambunctious but extremely lovable 5-year old Border Collie mix.

What is your favorite TV show you watch together? We really enjoy watching VEEP together for some good laughs.

Oh, The Cuteness Is More Than I Can Bear

I always love when I show up to a newborn session, and there are grandparents there. It’s always great to have extra help those first days at home with a little one. We had so much help the day of their session, which was so awesome. Oh, and have you seen their nursery? So much love and thought went into decorating it – such a special place for this little one. (That I love you more than I can bear print – ADORABLE) I love photographing the nursery because their room can change so much so quickly, and it’s nice to have photos of the room where you rocked them, fed them in the middle of the night, sang bedtime songs, said prayers, changed diapers…read books. One thing I also love about newborn sessions is seeing all the books that have been picked out (So much fun!) And this little one already had tons of books waiting to be read. I also could not get over how sweet the last few images of him looked in black and white. I usually just love color so much, but had to share these.

This little one was just so snug and content with his Mommy and Daddy. He slept and dreamed and just loved being held. I was able to capture such a sweet morning at home for this family. I love, love, love the sweetness of newborn sessions at home. No stress of having to be somewhere or pack things up – just getting ready when you have a newborn is stress enough!
