The Cattails

This park is one of my favorites because oh my, the light can be so stunning. I had a lot of fun with this session – the light, the fence, and the cattails. I think that’s what the plant is called…..they are just so interesting and add so much texture. And it was so great to meet these two! This stunning Mama to be was just glowing – and loved the dress she chose. Gorgeous! It was such a beautiful evening – just perfect capturing the love they have for their sweet baby girl who will be born soon. I love Maternity minis because it gives us a chance to chat before the newborn session and couples can kind of see how I direct and work during a session. I usually recommend planning your session around 34-36 weeks but we can plan a maternity session whenever it works best for you and your family. Maternity Minis are just so much fun, and we definitely had such a great evening the night of their session. Can’t wait to photograph their baby girl soon!

According to Mom…

Why did you pick this location? What was your favorite part of the session? I picked this location because I thought it looked very peaceful and serene. I wanted to use soft colors and have a romantic vibe and this seemed like a good match. My favorite part of the session was the beautiful light that we had. The sun was just going down and it allowed us to capture some moments in a special way

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? My only concern was that it would feel awkward to take these pictures that would be focused on my belly. Becky made us both feel so comfortable with her humor and laidback attitude. I think we both were pleasantly surprised at how easy and relaxed the whole process was.

Do you have a theme for your nursery? What has been the most fun part of shopping for your baby? We do not have a theme necessarily, but we are sticking with a particular color palette. I wanted to do something a little different, so we chose to use mint, peach, and navy. I had fun getting some custom made prints from Etsy to match the colors exactly. We chose to use elephants, giraffes, and birds for the prints. The walls are mint, we have a navy chest that we will use as a changing table and all of our bedding, decorative accents, etc. are mint, peach, and navy. We did put a sparkly crystal ceiling light in there for an extra feminine touch and to give our little girl some bling:)

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? It is rare that we have a Saturday where neither of us has anything going on, so when that happens we love to just spend our time together. We would probably sleep in, go out and get a nice big breakfast, and then spend the rest of the day hanging around the house and enjoying each other’s company. I like to cook so we would eat dinner at home and then find a good movie to watch. We’re pretty laid back!

What is your favorite tv show you watch together? Game of Thrones! We have both read the books (Jordan read them all twice!), so we are very much into seeing the story come to life on screen. It is difficult sometimes as they have now strayed pretty far from the plotline in the books, but we try to just take the tv show as a separate thing and not let it bother us. It is still such a great show!

We had so much fun Saturday night at our first ever family mini sessions with Little Apple Styles. Our clients had fun, we had fun, so many giggles. It’s no secret, we love, love, love Boyce Farms. Their farm is the best spot to get your tree whether you get it from the field or buy one of their trees from the mountains. We also loved the lil photo bus + all of our wonderful props from Suzanna’s Antiques. On with the previews!

Downtown Raleigh Baby Photographer

Skyline First Birthday

I have loved photographing this sweet baby boy during his first year. I first met his sweet family at their newborn session. They are so easygoing and fun and a joy to photograph. I think we made it through their session right before it started raining. I could not even stand how cute this little one is – those curls, oh my!

According to Mom…

What kind of feel were you thinking for your session? We wanted to celebrate living in Raleigh. We moved here three years ago, had our son here a year ago, and I wanted our photos to reflect that.

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one. Benson, my husband, was born in India and raised in TX.
Ayan, my son, loves fish, following (and trying to catch) our cat around the house. So far, the cat manages to elude him.

What was your favorite part of our session? I love working with Becky–she’s so good and so easy to be around! I loved being outside, although I didn’t love the humidity that day, I loved seeing a new part of the area. I just love having the three of us spend time together, have fun, and then have an amazing photographer capture the moments. Usually I’m the one taking the pictures, so I am not often in the photos with Ayan so it’s important to me that we have pictures as a family.

What’s your favorite family activity? We love family walks, hikes, and vacations in the mountains.

What was the weather like the day of your session? So hot. So humid. I was so sweaty, but it made Ayan’s hair curl so sweetly.

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session. Jeans and a white sleeveless top from Ann Taylor Loft. I’m so comfortable in jeans and I thought white sleeveless would be a have a summery feel.

What props did you bring and why? I brought some colorful books and toys to serve as distractions and to add color to the photos if needed.

What are some words of wisdom you have for other families preparing for a session? No need to prepare! Just be yourselves and have fun. Maybe think about your outfits a bit. Also, maybe don’t plan an outdoor shoot during the most humid month of the year…

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? Nope, no worries!

How to Send your Christmas Cards on Time…and Avoid the Naughty List

raleigh-boyce-farms-family-photographer_4059P I N this to pinterestArticle by Ericka of Little Apple Styles

The fact that I am writing this post makes me giggle.  If you know me in real life you know that I work best under pressure (the Oh No, this is due today kind of pressure).  Last year I had an epiphany.  How wonderful and refreshing it is to mail your Christmas Cards on time and at no extra cost. They are an investment after all!   I was so happy they finally would arrive BEFORE December 24th.  Unlike past years, I did not have to pay a rush fee to the card printing company or upgrade the shipping for them to arrive faster.

I am sharing with you some tips for you to become a Christmas-Card-Genius this year!

  1. It is never too early to start planning:  Clothing with holiday colors and fun accessories go on sale towards the end of the season.  For example I stocked up with Christmas pajamas in January.  I am so excited to use them for my Christmas Photo Session this year!
  1. Keep your address list updated: I keep my family & friends address list in an excel spreadsheet on my computer.  I update it as I receive information on them moving, getting married, having kids.  Since I have little ones – I also add/edit my list as I receive Birthday Cards and/or Classrooms Lists.  This way I know where to send my cards and I also have a good idea on how many cards I am going to need to order.
  1. Take your photos early (Please hear me out on this one!) Avoid scrambling around during photographer’s busiest season. Contact your photographer to make sure you are on the schedule.  Do not forget to double check their current turnaround time.  Starting in September, most photographers will also start communicating their holiday schedule and information for their mini-sessions!  They will fill up fast, so make sure you sign up as soon as you possibly can. I am so super excited to be styling Becky’s Holiday Minis – some dates are fully booked but there is still some availability. If you are interested in any of them contact us ASAP
  2. Order your Christmas Cards!  Off season prices are cheaper AND you will not have to upgrade shipping options if you have plenty of time.   Several companies, like Minted, also offer a free recipient address printing.  I used it last year and it was just the cherry on top.  It saved me time addressing them myself and they looked so much more presentable! You can click over to Minted to see their gorgeous Foil-Pressed Holiday Cards, too! (sooo pretty!)

  1. Order your Holiday-Themed stamps early: These stamps are normally available by the beginning of October.  They can be pre-ordered here. Last year I had my heart set on the ornament set stamps and it was sold out at my closest USPS offices.  I will be pre-ordering this year for sure!                       I personally think that having your cards addressed, sealed and stamped by November 30th is ideal. You can drop off them in the mail December 1st.  What a great way to start the month!  You can then sit back and wait on receiving your family and friends cards…and stress about parties and gifts…but that is a subject for a completely different post!

A few images from last year’s minis (and this year’s are going to be sooo cute, too!) and of course, my Christmas card!
