One thing I love about Senior Portraits is brainstorming ways to make the session unique. Your senior portrait session shouldn’t look exactly like anyone else’s. It should reflect your personality and style. Riley and I had already had a brainstorming meeting and we have another date set up in the spring. I usually like to have two locations for Senior sessions and we had just decided on one. When the snow started pouring in, (and pouring, and pouring…I don’t think it stopped snowing this entire day!) it was a perfect backdrop for her second location. Riley said her favorite part of the session was the different theme and ideas, but also my amazing umbrella hat (which made me laugh!) If you are going to take pictures in the snow when it’s actually snowing, the umbrella hat really helps. (You can see a behind the scenes images that her mama took here) We barely get snow like this in North Carolina, but I had tried taking images in the snow before (while my camera was getting soaked from the snow) so I had ordered the hat then and was glad to have it on hand. If I didn’t get a lot of strange looks, it might actually make motherhood easier on rainy days..no holding an umbrella and a toddler – ha!

Riley’s advice to other Seniors, “Relax and be yourself! It’s a portrait of you, and you have to be comfortable and let yourself shine! Also, loosen up and have fun. Think of something funny while you are taking them – Don’t worry about how you look.” It was so much fun to take these, and Riley, her mama, and I definitely laughed, climbed through trees, watched as people driving by stared at the umbrella hat, and were just a little bit cold!!!

Oh the tough days of dropping the first nap and going down to just one nap. It can be so tough..one day they have so much energy and the next they are screaming mad and sound asleep by 10 A.M. The transition has been a little bit easier for this little one than it was for Owen, but still he has his days where he just can’t make it and needs to rest. A few weeks ago, I finally put a blanket in the crib (without worrying and checking on him every 5 minutes. I know most people say they can have them at 12 months, but still…) His Mimi also got him a lovie that didn’t have any eyes he could pull off and eat. (He tries to eat EVERYTHING – especially his blankie and lovie) How did he respond to the blanket and lovie? THRILLED. just giggles and giggles and loves them so much. He carries them around giggling (usually the blanket is in his mouth) If you ask him to pick one up, he goes and gets it. (melt my heart) He also started walking this week..(like barely walking…a few steps here and there) Neither one of my boys has been that excited or rushed to start walking. He also thinks it’s hilarious that he’s taken over Owen’s chair. Oh, that giggle and precious baby boy!

And in case you missed my facebook post, I’m looking for two newborn models March 25th and March 26th (These are family sessions so first baby with parents or parents with siblings too) Contact me for more info! Sessions include 5 free digital files.

When it’s snowing outside, it’s a perfect day for unique senior portraits. I definitely had to take out my umbrella hat for these (see a behind the scenes here) since it was pouring snow all day! It’s so rare for us to get crazy snow, and this was the day that it just would not stop snowing. It definitely made for some beautiful photos, and I can’t wait to share all of these! Riley and I had chatted about coming up with locations/ideas for her senior portraits that were very different, and the snow was just perfect! I will be sharing more soon – cannot wait to share all of them!

beautiful tree in my neighbor’s yard

Who else was in shock about the second snowstorm this past week? I really had no idea, was thinking I was taking Owen to preschool Tuesday morning, and wow, snow was everywhere! I usually love being able to be out and about, get my lists checked off, complete all the tasks that I need to do for the day, but I will say, the snow “vacation” this week was nice. I didn’t know how much I needed the rest of being stuck in the house – doing laundry, building a snowman, making cookies. I did squeeze in a run to the grocery store before the second round of snow came. (and it’s still on the ground!) I tend to look at the weather because it’s important to my job, but it usually changes so fast, I have no idea what to think. Did you see the forecasted 70 degrees for Wednesday? Amazing! There is so much that I want to work on and accomplish this month before the weather is warm and we are spending our days outside again.

1. Running. I’ve been focusing so much on distance and through all my reading, it looks like intervals is the better way for me to go. So, for March, I’m going to switch to intervals instead of focusing so much on distance. I have a tried a few days so far, and it is tough, but I like the idea of using a plan and will see what I think of it.

2. Continue plans on the 2015 Limited Edition Spring Minis. The amazing stylist for the event and I had a planning meeting at Starbucks last night, and I am SOOO excited. It’s going to be so much fun, and if you signed up, stay tuned for more information soon! You can also add your name to the waiting list here. I still can’t believe how fast these sold out – even with adding a few extra spots.

3. One thing I want to work on more is having a little bit more of a schedule to our days. We do follow a nap schedule and, as you know, when you have little ones, your days mostly revolve around that. I’ve also tried adding a reading time in the afternoons after we go to the gym. Owen reads a book and I read my own book.. while enjoying some decaf coffee.(Harrison crawls around, gets in Owen’s chair and laughs at us the whole time…see it here)

4. Reading. This is one of those I keep coming back to. With the pouring snow and days at home, I have had so much more time to read and it is definitely a goal of mine to read more this month. I’ve ordered a few books. (Just finished this one) and would love to know some favorites you have read lately.

5. Finish planning out client events and get everything organized for a few mentoring sessions in March/April. I will be offering mentoring to other photographers and will be putting more information on my website soon. If you’re interested in more information before then  – send me an e-mail. (becky@rebeccakellerphotography.com)

6. Continue working on a new home office – planning what I need to put in the almost empty room. (Picking out a desk, storage, etc.) We have rearranged our home so much in the past few months, decluttered so much, but it is still an ongoing process.

7. Research more houseplants to add around the house – which are your favorites?

I will be watching the weather this week, and if anyone hears anything about another possible snow/ice storm, let me know!

This little one lives just around the corner and stopped by in between snow days for his one year portraits at the studio. With all the snow the past two weeks, a lot of sessions have had to be rescheduled but the day of this little one’s portraits the roads were great. I am not great with driving in the snow…I was totally one of the people stuck (two weeks after moving to Raleigh) in 2005 during the ice storm where people were stuck in their cars for hours. My husband grew up in Ohio so he is so much better at handling the roads. I’m still counting down the days until warm weather and summer!

So many first year sessions coming up this spring –  this mama recommends keeping it relaxed and fun. Be silly and you will get some great smiles. Bring a sibling along for laughs, too! Big sister was definitely a big help – he just smiled and giggled and laughed at her the entire time – precious! Mom said she was nervous about bringing big sister to the shoot but she ended up being a great help! She really made him laugh and giggle.

Thinking of planning a first year session in the studio? According to this Mama, “It was so natural and the lighting was awesome. I love how she just captures life moments and nothing looks posed.” Thank you soooo much, for the kind words and I love capturing these sweet memories for families. Our little ones just grow so quickly, don’t they?! Harrison started walking yesterday (my children love to wait until the last minute to walk) and I’m amazed at how grown up he looks already!

It’s always nice to have helpful hints of where to buy things. This little one’s onesie was from Etsy, the balloon was ordered from Amazon, and the cake was from Harris Teeter.
