Three months is such a special milestone to document. (I have loved when my babies have gotten to three months because that means I am getting more sleep – woo hoo!) At three months, they are still usually awake for such a short window of time, and it’s so great to capture their sweet little smiles and personality. And this one was just so adorable and I loved capturing such sweet moments with her Mommy and Daddy. One thing I love about milestone sessions is photographing the things they don’t do very long, like playing with Mom’s necklace (just precious!) Oh, and her rubbing her eyes! Love that we captured how sleepy she was at the end. We had a perfect evening, and I just couldn’t believe how big she’d gotten since her newborn portraits!

According to Mom…

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one?

Carrie – a Leo

Frank – loves homemade beer

Giuliana – loves milk and pacifiers

What were your favorite parts of the session? Becky is so efficient and professional. She also makes us feel special – it’s as though she doesn’t photograph babies day in and day out. She is very supportive and reassuring. She is also a pro at working with babies to get them to smile. I loved that the session was so quick – only 45 minutes!

Tell me about your outfits you wore for the session. Frank wore what he always wears. I wore whatever fit. Giuliana wore two sweet dresses my mom bought for her before she was born.

What are some words of wisdom you have for other Mamas preparing for a session? Wear something comfortable and bring a hairbrush.

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? I was worried she would cry the whole time.

What do you wish/dream for your little one? I want her to be healthy and happy.

Did you bring any of your little one’s favorites to the session? According to Mom…”She likes breastmilk and I brought them to the session. ha.”

These two were a joy to photograph. We laughed and laughed. I felt like the allergies were so bad this week I was tearing up anyway so laughing just made it worse – ha! We had beautiful light unlike the rainy week we’ve had this week! I bet this location looks completely different now – I was amazed at all the green everywhere when I was driving today. (So yay for rain as long as we don’t have to cancel sessions! April flowers bring May flowers!)

According to Jenna…

What was your favorite part of the session? Getting into fun poses!

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? Just about looking natural.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday? We like to go on “adventures” to try out barbecue places around the area!

How did you meet? We met in 2004 working at Domino’s together:)

Do you have any pets and what are their names? A fat cat named Piper.

What is your favorite tv show? How I met your Mother

Such a sweet session this was celebrating the arrival of their first baby. He was also just so content and happy to sleep the entire session – I couldn’t believe it. Newborns usually like to sleep but every once in a while they are wide awake for their portraits. Sweet little Jackson just dreamed away the entire time. It was also great to have his grandma there – grandparents can be such a big help during newborn sessions. It’s always great to have extra help after having a baby. Jackson’s room was decorated super cute, and I’m glad we got a sweet image of him yawning in his crib.

According to Mom…

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? I was so overwhelmed with emotions. I just thought he was the most beautiful baby that I’ve ever seen (yes, I am biased :-). It was the happiest moment of my life.

What was your favorite part of our session together? You were so fun to work with. You had a great sense of humor, but were also very professional, efficient and talented. It was really convenient to have you come to us. Getting places with a newborn is NO JOKE!

How did you prepare baby for our session? I read through your tips and I looked at the pictures you had online to know what I liked. Much to my husband’s dismay, I ran out to the store to get us a few neutral colored shirts that looked nice together. I pulled out our favorite wraps and blankets. I also woke the baby up an hour before the shoot and fed him right before, so he’d be nice and sleepy.

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you nervous or worried before? The experience was great! We were just excited to have pictures of the baby and our new family being taken, no worries at all. The session was wonderful and the pictures exceeded our expectations.

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? I highly recommend putting your newborn into what my husband and I like to call a “milk coma” (feed him or her right before), so that your baby is nice and sleepy. Think through if there are any special blankets or props that you’d like in the pictures and have them out and ready. Becky is a really talented photographer so if there is something specific you would like let her know, but trust her and you won’t be disappointed.

Did you have a sentimental item at our session? No, but my mom was in town. I know Grandma was excited that she got to have a professional picture taken with her first grandchild.

Was there a sentimental item in your nursery or parts of your nursery that we photographed that are special to you? Yes, we had a custom made shelf made (from Etsy). The picture of it turned out great.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? It would start with a FULL night of sleep.:-)We’d make a big breakfast together, take a long walk with the dog at the park, do something relaxing (make a fire, hang out on our swing on the deck, etc.), and maybe watch a movie and get take out or have over a few friends for dinner.

Any advice to other families picking our wardrobe or preparing for family portraits? Go neutral and simple. Don’t wear something real trendy or someday you’ll wonder what you were thinking when you put on your outfit that day.

How precious are these two little girls? I still can’t believe how content and happy they were during the whole session. They are just beautiful, and I love that Mama painted their toe nails to be able to tell them apart. (see the picture below – adorable! I imagine it was a challenge to paint their tiny little toes.) They are also sooo loved by their big brother (don’t you just LOVE his hair?) He was so adorable – he showed me all of his great play doh toys, and his amazing book nook that was just for him. It’s always so great to photograph the siblings by themselves at a session whenever newborns need to take a break and eat. Their mama was just glowing and handling twins with such ease – I just couldn’t believe it. So great to meet this sweet family of five!

This little one was around a month old the day of his newborn portraits. He was just so content and was both awake and asleep during the session. His big brother was absolutely adorable too, and pretty much snacked the entire session (which is a great part of having a session at home. Older siblings have all their toys and snacks, too!) It was a pretty spring day so we spent a few minutes at the end of the session outside with a pretty spring tree! I am soo happy to see flowers/trees blooming again! yay! (And yay for green leaves on the trees!)

According to Mom..

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? Brayden was so wide eyed when he came out..he was ready to see the world!I also thought, how is he so small, he felt so much bigger when he was in my belly!

What was your favorite part of our session? I loved that you were able to make my toddler smile and look at the camera. We were all so comfortable with you in the home. The nice part is I didn’t feel like I had to clean it all up.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? The baby was easy…I just made sure he was fed before the shoot. My toddler was the tough one!

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you nervous or worried before and how did it turn out? I loved it! The pictures turned out absolutely perfect!

What would be your advice to someone having newborn photographs taken? Keep it simple. I liked that we just put him in a white swaddle instead of a bunch of props.Trust the photographer – she captured the baby in all sorts of angles and some with eyes open and some shut, and they all were beautiful.

Did you have a sentimental item at our session? The cradle we used was built by my father and both my brother and I slept in it as babies. It’s been passed to all the grandkids, too.

Do you have any other children, and how did they react to the baby? I have an almost 2 year old boy. He is absolutely in love with his little brother. He likes to help feed him, give him his paci, and give him kisses. He wakes up every morning and comes home from daycare everyday, and the first thing he does is run to the baby to gently rub his head and make sure he is ok. He shows a lot of concern for his little brother’s well being.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? With the weather getting nice we love to go to play in the yard, go for a walk downtown, go to the fairgrounds, or Pullen Park. With two little ones, we feel accomplished if we can get to one place and enjoy a lunch together before nap time and the complete chaos starts:)

Any advice to any other families picking out wardrobe or preparing for family portraits? I would say pick clothes that compliment each other’s. But most importantly, ask the photographer what kind of settings they want to shoot you in so you can dress appropriately. If you’re not sure about something, pick 2-3 outfits. Since you are at your own house, you can quickly change if needed.
