Everything about this session photographing their senior portraits I just love. It was one of those overwhelming locations – I could have stayed there and photographed different spots for hours. (Like being in Charleston with a bunch of photographers a few weeks ago. It’s like we can barely get anywhere because we want to stop and take pictures!) This senior was very involved in the planning process for this session and we even spent a day hiking to find the best spots for the canoe. I am not crazy about nature so I will admit I was scared half to death hiking through the woods assuming a snake was coming for me at any minute! We ended up finding a spot that was a little more open and would be better for carrying a canoe (see here) and especially since we knew we’d be done after sunset which we were. We spent every last second in this session, and I love, love, love all the images! (You can see part one here and stay tuned to the blog for part three!)

According to the Senior…

What was your favorite part of the session? whimsical theme

Were you nervous about the session beforehand? No, because you’re so easy to work with!

What does this session convey about your style/personality? I love nature, and that I am unique.

What advice can you give to other Seniors preparing for their Senior Portraits? If Becky is taking your pics, you have nothing to worry about!

May was a busy busy month. It’s summer! Looking forward to June and everything summer…watermelon, key lime pie, trips to the pool (once Owen’s collarbone is better)  more beach trips, collecting sea shells, ice cream, popsicles..(does most of this have to do with food?) We celebrate Owen and his cousin’s birthday every year at the beach Memorial Day weekend – these two just love decorating their cake!

The critters went to Disney World

Goals for June:

1. I want to attempt 20 Pure Barre classes in 30 days but we will just see how it goes. Sometimes I am just too sore to go back two days in a row. It’s a little bit more difficult to get there since there’s no childcare but I’d like to see how many classes I can get to this month. I can also try to squeeze in a 6 A.M. class before Michael goes to work.

2. Come up with super fun memorable summer ideas that Owen can do even with his hurt arm. We attempted a trip to the park last week and it was just too hard for him not to be able to climb and do all the things that he is used to doing.  Hopefully our check up on Friday will go well.

3. I have a few books to finish reading this month and will update you on what I thought at the end of June. I’ve been using the GoodReads app a lot and love seeing what my friends are reading and recommending.

4. Make an album of our Pinkle Toes family pictures. Can’t wait to blog all of them. I have a lot of blogging to catch up on this week so stay tuned for a lot of blog posts!

5. Shoot an example of what our Limited Edition Event with Little Apple Styles in August is going to be like. This one is going to be sooooo super cute and very unique! It’s definitely one you won’t want to miss.

6. Start booking fall sessions. I’ve had a lot of people contact me about fall dates so I will be opening them up soon. These go very quickly – especially weekend dates.

May was a super busy month…I don’t think I realized how busy it was going to be, and all of a sudden it was here. Mother’s Day & my birthday were so super special – the boys went to Homewood and picked out a spring blooming tree for the yard. (not too big – we have a super small yard) Owen also picked out a cupcake at Whole Foods with a tree on it. #lovehim. Between Charleston – our family portraits & the Pinkle Toes Workshop Reunion, Mother’s Day, my birthday, a broken bone, Harrison in and out of the emergency room with 105 and 105 temps and two Coastal Sessions, it’s been a busy month!

What I learned in May….

1. How much effort goes into a family session. We had our family portraits planned for this month, and it was so great for me to remember what it’s like to be a client. So much thought goes into every session and all the little details.I have soooo much to say about the portraits (You can see them on Michele’s blog here and I’m also going to blog them soon) Love, love, love, love, love them! Big thanks to Little Apple Styles for help with picking out wardrobe for our session, and my friend Brooke for convincing me to buy a bright Blue and Coralish pink dress at the anthro birthday party. It’s a lot brighter than what I normally buy, and I love it! Ericka did such a great job coordinating THREE boys with pink!

Thank you Michele of Pinkle Toes Photography for this photo (and sooooo many more I love!)

2. How much I would love Pure Barre. So I’ve been doing workout videos at home for the past several months and have really loved them. During the Pinkle Toes Workshop Reunion in Charleston this month, Michele asked us if we wanted to try a barre class. I lovved it. I definitely couldn’t do all of it, and still can’t, but I really love going to the classes. I’m still sore pretty much every time I go, but it’s such a great workout.

3. How easy it is for a little one’s bone to break. So, we have our first broken bone, and I’m still kind of in shock about it. Kids jump off beds onto their heads, climb trees, jump over things, topple all over the place and do not break a bone. Owen was barely chasing his cousin around the kitchen and fell right on to his collarbone. (I also learned if you think you might have a broken bone – just go straight to the orthopedic urgent care. We went to the one on Durant.)

4. My little boy is growing up. Ok I’m not going to cry right now, but I did cry at his preschool graduation. He was “Most Enthusiastic Learner” and said he wanted to be a “Future Chef.” Poor thing had to wear his cap and gown with only one arm through because of his broken bone. Overall he has had the best atittude about everything, thank goodness.

I only had a few minutes after his graduation to snap a few pictures of him in his cap and gown.

5. How much fun it is to get together with a small group of other photographers. The last reunion in NY was a lot of fun but definitely a bigger group. I didn’t know anyone at this Reunion, and it was so much fun to make new friends – we laughed so so much. And going anywhere with photographers is just tedious because we all stop everywhere to take a few photos (which can turn into 100) We did so many fun things in Charleston – ate AMAZING food, went on a food tour, saw where Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively got married (Boone Hall Plantation, also where The Notebook was filmed) carriage tour, Rainbow Row, ate Belgian Gelato, photographed a maternity session on the beach, spent hours on the porch chatting, got up at sunrise to photograph the Folly Beach Lighthouse (only photographers get up this early) spent forever in a field of wildflowers at Boone Hall…. I’m sure I’m forgetting something but we squeezed a lot into a few days. Thankful for new friends and also getting to meet a lot of photographers not too far from me – Wilmington, Greensboro, Charlotte, and South Carolina.

6. How much I have loved this stroller for trips out shopping. Owen was playing with some of the toys they had out at this point, but usually he’s standing or sitting playing a game, and it has been my favorite stroller for going anywhere with the two of them. (Still love my double bob craigslist find for the outdoors)

Another one of the Spring Limited Edition Minis – such a sweet session of this Mama with her three little ones. (And, eeeek, we just did some ballerina photos of her little girl – sooooo cute! On the blog soon!) This was a 2015 Limited Edition Client only event (we have another one coming up in August that you won’t want to miss!)

According to Mom..

What was your favorite part of the 2015 Limited Edition Spring Minis? The location was beautiful!!! It’s my favorite one we have done so far!!!

Was it fun having a stylist at the event and outfit suggestions beforehand? I loved the flower crowns they made the photos!!!
The outfit suggestions were helpful. I was able to pick something out that would go with the overall theme of the shoot.

What did your little ones think of the new props? I was surprised that my little one left the crown on. The boys loved the croquet set.

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session and why you chose them. My outfit was from Altar’d State. I narrowed my choices down to 2 different dresses. I was unsure which one was the best option so I contacted Ericka from Little Apple Styles. She looked at the pictures I sent and said the white lace one would best match the vision of the shoot. She was right! I’m so glad I followed her advice!

The kids were wearing clothes from Gap. They always seem to have a great selection that my children will wear!

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? I always worry that 15 mins will not be enough time. With 3 VERY active little ones it takes awhile for them to warm up to the idea of having their picture taken. Both Becky and Ericka were great about getting them to cooperate!

I sometimes (well, ok, a lot..) have a hard time planning a session based on the weather forecast. The first time we planned our session I think there was a very low chance of rain. I was a little nervous as I left the house because it started to look dark, but I had a little bit of a drive. Emily calls me and sure enough it’s raining! The forecast the day of our rescheduled session looked like it could be very cloudy – it was not! We just had the prettiest light. I first met this sweet family when their baby girl was one year old – their little ones are ADORABLE and just so incredibly sweet. I love that they brought their baseball gloves, too! And their mama is just sooo sweet! Such a joy to photograph this family again!

According to Mom…..

Where was your session and why did you choose this location? Dorothea Dix Park. It is beautiful and green but has an amazing view of the skyline. I wanted to do something that would celebrate Raleigh because we love it here. We chose the spring for these pictures because it’s such a beautiful time of year (and because it felt like time to get new family photos)

What’s your favorite family activity? Our family loves to play outside. We have a playground in our neighborhood that we visit all the time. We are also huge baseball fans. Even though my son isn’t on a team yet, he loves to dress up in his baseball pants and throw a ball around or even organize a little family game.

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one? Eric– he’s my husband, and he is one of the most loving and playful people I know.
Emily— that’s me! I’m a reforming workaholic.
Owen– he’s our five year old. He is a total chatterbox and will tell anybody anything.
Charlotte– she’s two and she is very careful and serious about things, which is quite the contrast to her old brother.

What was your favorite part of our session? It was a gorgeous evening, but the main thing I appreciated was your patience and your serious kid skills. Both kids were kind of losing it at various points, but you still managed to get over 100 profoundly happy pictures! It’s also fun to get to spend some time just being a family– as opposed to going somewhere or needing to accomplish something.

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session. I agonized over our outfits, but we all ended up wearing our favorite nice-ish clothes. Once I laid them all out on the bed, I thought they worked well together. Everyone but Charlotte was wearing J. Crew from various seasons past, and her dress is a hand-me-down from the Children’s Place. I wanted us to look polished, but comfortable. I also brought a change of clothes for Charlotte in case there was a potty accident.

What props did you bring? We brought a quilt (that I made), baseball stuff (for pictures and to keep the kids entertained if needed), and the book Little Chicken’s Big Day. We also brought some Captain America stuff but ended up not using it. I think it’s nice to have extras and kind of go with the mood of the evening.

What words of wisdom do you have for other families preparing for a family session? It’ll be fine! Lay your clothes out to see how they look beforehand, and just relax. Also, I should’ve brought non-messy snacks, so learn from my mistake!

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? I was worried that the kids would make weird faces the whole time, but that didn’t happen. The first time we had Becky take our pictures, I was worried that our family wouldn’t be able to look as loving and fun as all the other families on her blog, but we did! I was so relieved when we got those pictures back. I don’t know why I was so worried about it. I was definitely less stressed this time.
