When I showed up, this sweet family four was finishing up breakfast, so I captured a few photos before starting the session. When I look back at images I’ve taken of my boys a year later, those everyday moments like sitting at the kitchen table or playing with a certain toy mean so much to me..so if siblings start playing in their rooms or I can capture an everyday moment at a newborn session, I do! After she was fed, this big sister was ready for some snuggles with her baby brother. (Did you see their photos at the hospital here?) She has been in love with him from the minute she met him + it was oh so sweet to photograph all of them together. I love the photos of all four them – so much joy + giggles! Oh, and make sure you see his musical nursery + the photo with his daddy’s guitar. I have been so blessed to meet this sweet mama (read her blog here) and her family.

According to Mom…

1.What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? Seeing my son for the first time was an amazing experience for a number of reasons. First, I had a repeat c-section due to complications from my first pregnancy and complications during this pregnancy and most of the time, c-sections mamas are not able to have the birth experience that others experience with a vaginal birth. However, our hospital is moving towards a more “gentle cesarean” approach and so I was able to have a clear drape in front of me so I could watch my son being born. It was way less gorey or scary than it sounds… it was truly amazing! Second, my husband and I waited to find out the gender of this baby and, while everyone predicted we were having a boy, it was so amazing to see him be born and see that he was, in fact, a boy! It was a moment I’ll never forget.

What was your favorite part of our session? Having our newborn session at home was wonderful. Even though I was only a week post-op and not moving around very well yet, everything still felt so easy, laid back, and relaxed. Even my husband (who doesn’t love getting his “picture made”) commented on how relaxed it was. Watching our daughter hold our son for photos just made this mama heart burst. Becky made us feel SO comfortable and confident. I wish all photo sessions were like this!

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? Honestly, I just made sure he was fed and changed… for me, it was more about preparing our daughter, our dogs, and my husband for the shoot. Haha!!

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous before? I wasn’t nervous at all because I knew Becky would do a phenomenal job… and boy, did she! Becky is SO confident and commanding (in the right way!) behind the camera and we never felt uneasy, unsure, or uncomfortable. I love how Becky just encourages her clients to be themselves and I love how she made us feel as though we were doing the exact right thing!

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? Just breathe, relax, and enjoy this time. This is such a precious moment in your life and your baby’s life… don’t stress yourself out too much about it and lose the ability to just treasure time with your sweet baby while he / she is so sweet and tiny.

Did you have a sentimental item at our shoot? I did. My mom passed away when I was in high school and one of the only things I have of hers that she made when she was pregnant with me is a little sign that says “We <3 Embry.” My parents didn’t find out if I was a boy or girl while they were pregnant with me, and so they called me “Embry” while I was in my mom’s belly. I’ve kept that sign through both pregnancies and used it as a focal point during labor and also had it hanging in our room next to ultrasound photos. It’s so special to me.

Was there a sentimental item in your nursery or parts of your nursery that we photographed that were special to you? The records that are hanging on the wall of my son’s room were actually my mom’s records. The original Beatles’ “Abbey Road” record, Jimi Hendricks, the Moody Blues… some of her favorites. It’s like there’s a little bit of her in the room.

Do you have any other children? How did they react to the baby? We do! We have a 2.5 year old daughter named Lilly and she is just in love with her baby brother.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? Honestly, we are simple. We love just a morning at home, taking a walk, or going to the museum or something like that. Then maybe grabbing lunch out as a family… we just love spending time together. Our lives can get so crazy, it’s nice to take the weekends to just slow down and enjoy each other

Any advice to other families picking out wardrobe or preparing for family portraits? Keep it simple! Especially for mom… darker colors will hide that post baby-bump… and wear a fabulous pair of earrings or a great necklace to make you feel super confident!

family photographer Raleigh_0747P I N this to pinterestI’ll be honest. I lovvvvve the holidays. Starting in October, it feels like holiday central, right? First, it’s everything pumpkins, then it’s Christmas. Oh, New Years + Valentine’s Day. We celebrate St Patrick’s Day with a little green, and then time for Easter. (And isn’t Easter early this year?!?) We have Mother’s Day + a lot of birthdays next but it’s a little quiet after that until 4th of July, right? Summer’s a little slower with holidays, and my kids just LOVE celebrating so it makes me happy when we have a holiday coming up.

I’m also, of course, in love with the Target one spot right when you walk in. It just seems like it keeps getting better and better. I stopped in this weekend to pick up a few things, of course, and walked out with Easter decorating bliss. I also picked up treats for the lunchbox and other fun surprises that are not on this post. I kind of get overwhelmed, especially since their one spot stuff sells out so quickly. The whole seasonal part of the store, of course, is now turning into one big Easter party, too. family photographer Raleigh_0748P I N this to pinterest

Of course, I love Target for pretty much everything else, too. I shop there way too much. As Mamas we all talk about how wonderful it is + there are so many great videos out there talking about moms and Target right? It is one of my favorite things to do with Harrison because I love him sitting there right in the cart in front of me, I have his undivided attention while we walk and chat. I have always loved walking with my little ones in the cart – they aren’t playing with toys, they are usually just chatting with me and of course, we stop by and look at trains, etc, while in the store. And if you’re expecting, of course, their baby registry is awesome, too! I love when I can shop for a baby present there because I’m already going to be there anyway.

Back to decorating…Harrison and I decorated while Owen was at school, and he was so surprised and excited when he walked in. They both have loved playing with the Easter nesting eggs (the pink one) shown below.I love these days of them being little! Ok, now to work on my what I want to bake for Easter list!

Gala season for the Little Apple family! I am a good example of “the shoemaker’s son always goes barefoot.”  I have the hardest time picking outfits for myself.  Maybe because I just had a baby….three years ago….if you know what I mean!

There were a couple of things I wanted to make sure were considered when looking for the perfect dress.  I wanted a long dress and I wanted to stay away from black.

My first instinct was to look for dresses in the Pantone color of the year – Rose Quartz or Serenity.  I know what you are thinking – what color is Serenity?!  To me it looks like if a beautiful light blue and a light purple had a baby.   I went shopping with a palette in mind and found several options.  This one below would be perfect for Spring Wedding or a styled Mommy and Me session *hint, hint*!!!

This was such a sweet day – I was up bright and early to photograph these two sweet siblings meeting, and also find out if they were having a boy or a girl! This Mama (read her blog here!) and I planned that I would arrive while she was in surgery, so I could capture Dad coming out to tell the family if their sweet baby was a boy or girl. We then went to the recovery room for some photos of the siblings meeting. After a few minutes, the grandparents, full of joy, came to meet this sweet baby boy. It was a beautiful morning, hard not to tear up + cry myself, or cry when editing or making the video. I could go on and on about this day, but you can also read the whole story by Molly herself here.  I love, love, love photographs in the hospital..they are just so precious!

I am not going to post every single one. I want to – ha. Just watch the video at the end.

So excited for this sweet 9 month session to be featured on The Little Umbrella today! (See the post here) I’ve been photographing this sweet girl since she was a newborn, and we met early one foggy morning for her nine month portraits. It is rare to have a session in the fog, and it was just stunning. I just love the unique look you get with fog, so it was a great surprise that morning. This little one was just so happy, and we were able to capture so many sweet moments with her Mommy + Daddy. Oh, I love photographing baby’s first year.
