What a joy it was to photograph this sweet family of six after they found out baby four was a girl. This sweet baby girl has three older siblings, and I showed up before they arrived. They were at soccer that morning and split between the grandparents (how great to have so much help when having a newborn!) They arrived at the hospital so excited to see their baby and even more excited to see their Mommy, which was absolutely precious. This room was super small, so it was quite hilarious with the four children and seven adults including me, and then the occasional nurse or doctor that stopped by. It was just way too cute the way these three loved on their baby sister and realllly wanted to hold her. This sweet little one’s big sister is super close to Harrison’s age, and it cracked me up how she ate her peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, because my child totally skips the bread and goes straight to what’s inside. I definitely had to get a picture of that and all of the sweetness with their grandparents and doting on their baby sister. I loveeee sessions in the hospital – the newness, excitement, and just how special it is to have a new baby.

I first met this sweet mama and their puppy at their maternity portraits here. She is super talented and crafty, and oh my, their house was gorgeous. I just loved all of her decorating – so much thought and love also went into this sweet little one’s nursery. (Just love his adventure theme – so cute with the foxes, tee pee, and woodland animals!) Everywhere you turned was another beautiful detail in their home, and it was so cute how his big sister puppy was right there with him through the whole session. We got so many sweet images of the two of them together in different rooms of the house.

It was a chill morning at home, (which is just why I love newborn sessions at home so much!) and this little guy was just so content to sleep and dream during his portraits + we were able to capture so many sweet memories. The newborn days go by so quick + I love being able to photograph them while they are so tiny. Such a sweet time!

We had just gorgeous spring weather the day of their session. And this sweet little guy, he just loved being outdoors…I am always amazed when someone asks for an outdoor newborn session. (I barely left the house for three months after I had my babies) This mama was just so relaxed + motherhood came so natural to her, there was no stress leaving the house and enjoying the pretty weather. The spring trees bloom so quickly, and then they are gone so I was so happy we were able to capture the beauty of the spring when this sweet baby boy was born. The petals on the ground – so pretty. Eeeeek! Just love all of these! (See their maternity portraits at Boyce Farms here)

According to Mom…

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? He is perfect and I can’t believe he is ours.

What was your favorite part of your newborn session? I loved having the session at the park. We are outdoors people and really wanted to have the first pictures with the baby outside, plus he loves to be outside. The weather was perfect, we were relaxed and the pictures turned out incredibly.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? We fed him and bathed him right before the session so he was content. We packed multiple outfits (which was good since he did spit up during the session) and we packed a bottle to feed mid session.

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous before? How did it turn out? It was wonderful! Becky was great at making sure both the baby and we were comfortable. I was nervous that he would get fussy during the session, but he loved being outside and did fabulously.

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? Relax and have fun! The pictures will be special no matter what.

Any advice to other families picking our wardrobe or preparing for a session? Wear something you are comfortable in and females have your hair so it won’t fall in your face, as mine kept doing.

Where to Pick Strawberries in Raleigh

Article by Ericka of Little Apple Styles

where to pick strawberries in raleighP I N this to pinterest

We are so “berry” excited for strawberry season!  The DIY Farmer in me has gone overboard this year with all the container gardening.   Becky mentioned I should share all my gardening adventures.  I guess she thought it was funny that I decided to get the basil-attacking-slugs drunk (Editor’s note – Beer is lethal for slugs).  When that did not work, because my slugs are hard core drinkers, I tried to convince my husband to let me raise chickens.   I may or may have not sketched my coop already.  I will share some tips, once they actually work for me!

Since our strawberry plants did not survive the sudden freeze – I scouted the internet and Facebook pages for some info on the best strawberry picking farms.  My main criteria, not further than 1 hour from my house.  I did not realize all these other cities were less than 1 hour from Morrisville.  I also did not realize I had so many around the corner from me.  Most of them offer both pick-your-own (PYO) and pre-picked (PP).

I noticed most farms are using social media to keep their customers informed in “real time.”   Check their page before going – just in case there are any changes in their schedule.  Also, if you are planning on picking your own, it is important to check if they are not picked out for the day.  Oh, and not all of them accept credit cards or have baskets available.  I tried to as include as much information as possible in the list below …and I am planning on touring them all so I can find my most favorite strawberry picking farm.

Which one is your favorite?  Did I miss any?  I would love to hear from all my strawberry-loving-readers!outdoor newborn photograpy raleigh_1157P I N this to pinterest

It had not been too long since their maternity portraits, and I could not wait to meet this sweet little one. He was content to be held by his Mommy and Daddy, and even his sweet Aunt showed up to help on picture day. (It’s always great to have an extra person to help. She also brought biscuits, so that’s a plus! Sometimes when you have a baby, you can forget to eat!) These two have been blessed with such loving families that have surrounded them and helped them during the newborn days.

They had the prettiest Bradford pear in their front yard, and I was glad the light was cooperating for us to snap a few photos in the front yard before running back inside. I love pretty flowers + I love newborn sessions at home so this session was the best of both worlds. His aunt also brought their Great grandfather’s produce scale – how cool is that? I love, love, love the photos we were able to get with it. Oh, and mom’s bracelet with the little feet – just had to get a photo of that, too.

According to Mom….

What was the first thing you thought when you saw your baby for the first time? When holding Silas for the first time after the long labor, my first thought was what a beautiful and miraculous cry he had. I cherished hearing his sweet voice for the first time. Joy came rushing into my heart that covered up all the pain.

What was your favorite part of our session together? I enjoyed our newborn session at home and really appreciated patience she gave as she assisted us in calming our little one during a fussy time. I felt free to care for Silas first as she also put his needs first.

How did you prepare the baby for our photoshoot? We let baby Silas sleep as long as he wanted without waking him. We fed him right before the session so that he would be content for as long as possible.

How was your experience having your newborn photographed? Were you worried or nervous before? How did it turn out? I was nervous that Silas wouldn’t go to sleep after waking and having an increased alertness that morning. Becky helped us transition into the sleeping pictures and I loved how comfortable and at ease she made us feel. We didn’t need to rush Silas into sleep.

What would be your advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken? I would advise parents to also care for themselves. It made a difference for us to eat breakfast and to get dressed and ready before we concentrated on preparing the little one.

Did you have a sentimental item at our session? We chose to use my husband’s Great-great grandfather’s produce scale. We layed Silas in the tray that was balanced by countering weights. This was very special for his family. We also used my husband’s Moses basket he slept in as a baby. I love that after 30+ years Silas was able to lay in his Daddy’s first baby bed.

Was there a sentimental item in your nursery or parts of your nursery that we photographed that were special to you? I’m glad Becky thought to photograph Silas’ name art that included the letters hanging from deer antler sheds we found around our woods. I also love that she took a photo of a Bible verse framed that we had prayed over Silas.

Any advice to other families planning a session or picking out wardrobe? Becky let us know that simple was best for us. My husband chose a solid colored button down shirt with dark jeans and I wore something that was flattering to my arms and fitted. Although I was self-conscious of my newly “post-pregnancy” body, I didn’t have to worry about unflattering photos (no matter what I chose to wear), because Becky chose such slimming angles.

How would you describe your perfect Saturday as a family? These days, a perfect Saturday consists of Silas’ letting us sleep until 7am!(: We like to eat a special breakfast together and enjoy walking around our family farm to see what adventures can be discovered.
