What I Learned in July

1.Packing Groceries ahead of time for the beach is my favorite. If you’ve been following my blog for a while, then you know that I mostly eat whole30. Fast food doesn’t really work that great for whole30 and our grocery stores are limited at the beach. (no Harris teeter with whole30 approved bacon) My mama is doing whole30 with me, and we did fine with our groceries/eating out Memorial Day week, but this time we decided to grocery shop here for a lot of things + also pack our cooler. I think we went to the grocery store for two things the whole week, and it was fabulous. (July 4th is also the busiest week at our tiny beach and Food Lion gets super crowded..which it was also nice to avoid the crowds) We got to eat our bacon all week and several other yummy things we brought along….and no wasted time at the grocery store. We did also stop at the Harris Teeter on 17 in Wilmington when we were driving in and picked up a few things we forgot (Across from the Walmart) It’s hard to see it from the road and never super busy. I also try to never leave the house without something in my purse, my favorite is either almonds or these. (I looooove them – so yummy. it’s that sea salt!)

2.Further proof that Sprouts is coming to Falls of Neuse and Litchford. I am beyond excited about this. I have been hearing rumors, there have been articles online, etc, but now there is a picture in front of the spot. I am sooooo excited!

3.Having to be quick at photo shoots is important lately. This has been my month of running from the rain during sessions..Well, ever since spring. There have been some sessions where we barely missed a storm, some where it stormed in the middle, and some where it stormed right when the session started and ended. It’s been a crazy weather month.

4. Kindness is always important. One thing the boys and I have been doing each week this month is focusing on how we can think about someone else that week, what can we do to let someone else know we are thinking about them. Owen has thought up some pretty sweet ideas, and I know Pop Pop loved having a peach cream pie surprise delivered to brighten his day. (Scratch Baking was in Our State this month, and he had been talking about how he really wanted to try one of their pies. The peach cream was unbelievable. I may have had a bite)

5.The biggest difference I noticed this month from whole30 is how much I love not being addicted to sugar. There are definitely some days I miss it, but overall I don’t feel like I need it everyday which is a huge difference for me. I do try to cheat once a week, and I’m so much more selective about what I want for my cheat meal – ha. I also now make my coffee in the vitamix without fancy creamers. (The vitamix makes it frothy like a latte which is awesome) My coffee includes organic coffee, grass fed collagen, smidge of coconut oil, smidge of grass fed organic unsalted kerrygold butter and a 1/2 tablespoon 0rganic cacao. I’ve also been experimenting with the Savory Spice Shop’s Murray River Salt and Fleur de Sel salt to see which one I like better in my coffee. Every since our trip to Amelie’s in Charlotte, I neeeeed salt in my coffee.

What I read this month..

This has been a super busy month with our first Coastal family minis, a week at the beach, and then so many sweet newborns I’m still editing. I did mange to squeeze in two books, but I had hoped to read more this month. Reading is my favorites because it makes me relax + de stress, and totally love my  kindlebecause I don’t have to wait for amazon to deliver them or try to plan a trip to the bookstore (not going to happen probably)

1.The One-in-a-Million Boy. This was such a great book and sweet story. I did cry a little bit because I’m a mama, but I loved that it was different then picking up a love story beach read that I read too many of in the Spring. (I needed light + happy when going through my surgery)

2.Before We Visit the Goddess This was another great story, and I read it so quickly. I loved how it told you about the grandma, daughter and granddaughter’s lives. There were so many different people telling the story, such a great read.

A Few Favorites in July

I am seriously amazed at these. Has anyone tried them? What did you think?

You know I’m not eating bread or sugar right now (hello, whole3o) but I think I’m going to have to make these for the kiddos for next year’s “tide dye tuesday.”

Love all of these great hair ideas for summer.

Holden Beach – of course, a summer favorite.

Who bought the Instant Pot on amazon this week when it was on sale? I bought one of these when it was on sale last time, and I’ll admit I’m still learning it, but a fave this month is definitely nom nom paleo’s live videos + she just posted one about the instapot.

A few things I want to read/tackle this month..

My skin is not so pale as it is in the winter (thank you days at the pool + beach) which I am not a huge fan of the sun + heat, so I am surprised I have even a little bit of a tan, but you know, I do take the kiddos out. Anyways, I need to pick a new foundation – let me know if you have something you love. Also, reading this.

Finding really good tea that I like. I’ve never been a huge la croix fan either but now that I’m a whole30 girl, I’ve been drinking one sometimes. What are your favorite flavors and what are your favorite teas? (without caffeine) And if you are a tea drinker, btw, this thing  is awesome.

Just for fun..

A session around this time last year – the sweetest newborn session at home!

A session in July two years ago – love this six month family session with the prettiest light + sweetest family!

The week of July 4th is definitely one of my favorites for the year. Some of my beach goals include

  1. Ride bikes every day
  2. Eat watermelon as much as possible
  3. Proco
  4. Make ice cream in the vitamix (ok, it’s just fruit but we’ll call it ice cream)
  5. Build sandcastles
  6. Make memories..sometimes take pictures of them and sometimes relax
  7. Read my bff kindle
  8. Get a coffee at Ocean Boulevard Coffee because I haven’t bee able to the last two trips.
  9. Take Owen to the waterslide

For July a few things I want to tackle are..

1.Getting back into a workout routine. I haven’t worked out since March, and just this past week I started walking. (If you are my fitbit friend, you will notice my steps have gone up) After the week at the beach which is usually alot of steps to and from the beach, I need to get focused again, now that I can run and do other workouts without worrying about my heart racing. (bye, bye SVT) Oh, and we will be doing a lot of bike riding – yay!

2.Books I want to check into this month..

If you have been following me, you know I’m a big whole30 fan. Here’s a few of the cookbooks I want to check out. (I am trying to be more creative with my whole30meals)

Nom Nom Paleo

*Well Fed – There are a few Well Fed books..like the weeknight dinners one so I’m not sure yet which one I will check out.

*Paleo Takeout: Restaurant Favorites Without the Junk

Other books to tackle

*The One-in-a-Million Boy

*Everyone Brave is Forgiven

*Lab Girl

*Before We Visit the Goddess
I have been reading like crazy the past few months so I will share my recommendations soon. Just kinda forgot, you know, so much going on with this.

3.Ok, next goal – Organize my fridge. I have looked at too many pretty organized inside of refridgerators on pinterest. I’ll post a little update later this month with which way I decided to go. So many possibilities..

What are your goals for July?!?

Holden Beach Family Photographer | What I Learned in June

holden beach family photographer _2958P I N this to pinterest

Memorial Day celebrating the cousins May/June birthday

1. June was a brave month for me. Honestly never having a c section or any kind of surgery, I was terrified to have a procedure on my heart. (see the whole story here) I did e-mail all my newborn clients before having this done and found a backup in case the recovery ended up being worse than it was. I am so thankful for such patient + kind clients. I did quite a few newborns the week before and then the two I did first after my surgery just happened to be born at a great time to wait a little over a week. (thank you sweet babies) The recovery was not bad at all, and I’m thankful for my husband and mom taking such good care of me + the kids that week.

2.I’m so thankful for my neighbors. Honestly, I could cry. I have been so blessed by them. They brought me awesome whole30 food after the surgery and checked on us. One of my neighbors taught me how to make her homemade lara bars because they are just amazing. You feel like you’re eating dessert.

3.That being said, if you are having any procedure done, I learned to plan a crazy busy week right before. I did not have a lot of time to think about it which was great. Owen’s birthday party was the night before so I honestly didn’t even have a second. And I’m so thankful to Ericka for helping me out so much with his party. So much cuteness – more to come soon.

4.Renting bikes at the beach is my favorite. We spent a week at the beach in the beginning of June, and oh my, I love the bikes. Harrison can still fit in the baby seat bike (like this one here– holds up to 40lbs) and we used the tagalong bike with Owen. (see one kind of like it here) They both loved it soooo much. We haven’t rented bikes until this year because you have to book them so far in advance, but I finally was able to get them. (See our favorite place to rent bikes and all our Holden Beach favorites here)

5. If you’ve been following my love of whole30, I can now drink coffee again without worrying about a racing heart…So, I thought I would add in one cup a day when I feel like it. So I have tried quite a few things..almond milk, etc. I just haven’t found anything exciting or worth even drinking the coffee. (I am super picky about coffee.) After trying bulletproof coffee, I am super impressed. I made it in the vitamix with grass fed unsalted butter, coconut oil, coffee + vanilla. It was realllly yummy. I’m sure I’ll cheat every now and then at my favorite coffee place, but I need something for everyday.

6. I discovered Nom Nom Paleo. This website might be a little life changing for my whole30 meals. I did download the app, and I am sooo excited about all the recipes. Cauliflower fried rice and the bacon guacamole sammies – such great ideas. She has a lot that are specifically whole30 although whole30 and Paleo are not very different.

7. My favorite summer dress here, and I am also loving the skort trend for the gym. (I got this one + love it)

Goals for April:

1.Plant some flowers in my yard after the last frost date. So ready for those warm temperatures we just had. (where did they go?) Pick up some hanging baskets for the front porch + geraniums in pots.

2.Start looking into places for Owen’s sixth birthday + Harrison’s 1/2 birthday party. (Since our Christmas Day boy barely gets a birthday, we have decided to celebrate in July.)

3.Go through and organize all the boys’ clothes for the changing seasons.

4.Start planning our Coastal Minis event.

5.Try Duck Donuts
