Goals for August | Day Trip to Wrightsville Beach
It’s back to school time around here. I cannot even believe it – it’s going to break my heart to send Owen back to school. I can honestly say I am not a fan of carpool – ha! I have loved the days we’ve had without a schedule, being able to take trips, etc. I will miss that sweet boy being around all day.
Goals for August:
1.Finish back to school shopping before the only thing for sell in 100 degree weather is long sleeves and sweaters in the stores. (Someone explain to me why sweaters are for sale so early)
2.Commit to my couch to 5 K. I have started running again and I really need to be dedicated so I can get up to a 5k again. I love the 10k trainer from Zen Labs. It’s free and works great for working up to running. I do need to work on my running playlist though. Since I didn’t run from March – June, I kind of slacked on adding new music.
3. I love, love, love, my Instant Pot . My favorite recipe I’ve made so far is Kalua Pig. I am not a slow cooker fan..I just never seem to get it together before lunch – ha! The pressure cooker is just right for me. Nom Nom Paleo also has some great facebook live videos you can watch on her facebook page which helped me with some of the recipes. I love being able to see it. And with the Kalua pig, I might be so lazy that I ask the butcher to go ahead and trim the fat and cut it in two. I also found some hawaiian sea salt at the Savory Spice Shop. So, this month I really want to find some more great pressure cooker recipes and focus on using it more. It’s just so easy.
4. Continue our kindness project with the kiddos – focusing on one way we can be kind each week.
Books I want to read this month.
The Mason Jar Cookbook looks really interesting.
The Bulletproof Diet – just wondering how it’s different than whole30 after reading reviews on Amazon. It seemed to have a lot of good ideas about why you should be eating more good fat.
I’m currently reading The Magnesium Miracle + I love it, so I want to finish it this month.
Other Books I want to read:
My Life in France by Julia Child
Lab Girl (didn’t get around to last month. So many great newborn sessions, I spent most of my free time editing)
A Walk in the Woods
I’ve also started Everyone Brave is Forgiven so I’ll be tackling that this month, too. Oh, I love, love, love books.
(See what I read last month here)
I need to share my refrigerator progress. I loved the organizers I got and will be sharing more soon. (I buy 24 packs of organic eggs from Costco + love being able to stack them!

What I Learned in July
1.Packing Groceries ahead of time for the beach is my favorite. If you’ve been following my blog for a while, then you know that I mostly eat whole30. Fast food doesn’t really work that great for whole30 and our grocery stores are limited at the beach. (no Harris teeter with whole30 approved bacon) My mama is doing whole30 with me, and we did fine with our groceries/eating out Memorial Day week, but this time we decided to grocery shop here for a lot of things + also pack our cooler. I think we went to the grocery store for two things the whole week, and it was fabulous. (July 4th is also the busiest week at our tiny beach and Food Lion gets super crowded..which it was also nice to avoid the crowds) We got to eat our bacon all week and several other yummy things we brought along….and no wasted time at the grocery store. We did also stop at the Harris Teeter on 17 in Wilmington when we were driving in and picked up a few things we forgot (Across from the Walmart) It’s hard to see it from the road and never super busy. I also try to never leave the house without something in my purse, my favorite is either almonds or these . (I looooove them – so yummy. it’s that sea salt!)
2.Further proof that Sprouts is coming to Falls of Neuse and Litchford. I am beyond excited about this. I have been hearing rumors, there have been articles online, etc, but now there is a picture in front of the spot. I am sooooo excited!
3.Having to be quick at photo shoots is important lately. This has been my month of running from the rain during sessions..Well, ever since spring. There have been some sessions where we barely missed a storm, some where it stormed in the middle, and some where it stormed right when the session started and ended. It’s been a crazy weather month.
4. Kindness is always important. One thing the boys and I have been doing each week this month is focusing on how we can think about someone else that week, what can we do to let someone else know we are thinking about them. Owen has thought up some pretty sweet ideas, and I know Pop Pop loved having a peach cream pie surprise delivered to brighten his day. (Scratch Baking was in Our State this month, and he had been talking about how he really wanted to try one of their pies. The peach cream was unbelievable. I may have had a bite)
5.The biggest difference I noticed this month from whole30 is how much I love not being addicted to sugar. There are definitely some days I miss it, but overall I don’t feel like I need it everyday which is a huge difference for me. I do try to cheat once a week, and I’m so much more selective about what I want for my cheat meal – ha. I also now make my coffee in the vitamix without fancy creamers. (The vitamix makes it frothy like a latte which is awesome) My coffee includes organic coffee, grass fed collagen , smidge of coconut oil, smidge of grass fed organic unsalted kerrygold butter and a 1/2 tablespoon 0rganic cacao . I’ve also been experimenting with the Savory Spice Shop’s Murray River Salt and Fleur de Sel salt to see which one I like better in my coffee. Every since our trip to Amelie’s in Charlotte, I neeeeed salt in my coffee.
What I read this month..
This has been a super busy month with our first Coastal family minis, a week at the beach, and then so many sweet newborns I’m still editing. I did mange to squeeze in two books, but I had hoped to read more this month. Reading is my favorites because it makes me relax + de stress, and totally love my kindle because I don’t have to wait for amazon to deliver them or try to plan a trip to the bookstore (not going to happen probably)
1.The One-in-a-Million Boy . This was such a great book and sweet story. I did cry a little bit because I’m a mama, but I loved that it was different then picking up a love story beach read that I read too many of in the Spring. (I needed light + happy when going through my surgery)
2.Before We Visit the Goddess This was another great story, and I read it so quickly. I loved how it told you about the grandma, daughter and granddaughter’s lives. There were so many different people telling the story, such a great read.

Holden Beach with Kids..It’s Turtle Time somewhere!
Article by Ericka of Little Apple Styles

I had to pleasure to style Becky’s Coastal Family Minis earlier this month. Coastal Sessions have a very special place in my heart – The Little Apple family just LOVES Holden Beach. Ironically, Becky introduced us to Holden when we were clients at her first Coastal Session four years ago. Back then, we did a day trip with an eleven month baby, a 4 year old and a 80 something grandma — what were we thinking! The adorable pictures made all “the wind is messing up my hair” comments and potty stops SO worth it!
We soon realized we needed more than one day. We now rent a house on good ole’ Ocean Boulevard and spend a whole week at my piece of North Carolina paradise. While on vacation, I am more of a lets just relax and “go with the flow” type of person. This attitude has not worked while vacationing with the kids in past years. This year I did my homework and had a PLAN! Like any normal person, I googled, stalked Facebook groups, and read tripadvisor.com reviews for days – maybe just one day, but still..I had a list of activities for the kids! yay me! haha
In preparation to our trip with visited the library right before we left to Holden. We got books about sea animals and sea life. Ethan, my 4 year old, favorite book is The Pout-Pout Fish . PS I secretly also love that book “BLUP, BLUUUP. BLUUUUUUUP” .
Eva’s favorite book was a joke book she found that taught her some sea animal jokes. Little miss comedian humored us with the jokes more times that we really wanted to…
Eva: How do you call a fish without an eye?
Me: I actually do not know
Eva: F-SHHHHHHH
Yes..you get the picture.
Eva also found a new interest in books about turtles – which made our Holden visit perfect. This beach has a Turtle Watch Program I was excited to bring her to!
During the Summer, Holden Beach offers a Children’s Turtle Time event on Wednesdays at 4pm at Holden Beach Town Hall. It lasts approximately one hour and is geared for kids from 3 to 6 years old. We arrived early as we heard town events are normally packed. We were happy to see Becky and her family there..what a small world! *wink wink* They split the kids into two groups: little kids and big kids. Both groups were read an age appropriate turtle book and they watch a short documentary that explains how they help turtles and their nests. The process is incredible and I had no idea turtle eggs are soft and shaped like a ping pong ball!
The little kids sang songs, worked on puzzles and made and adorable craft. The big kids were taken to find ‘pretend’ turtle eggs at the playground’s sand box. At the end they all received a bracelet to remind them they were turtle friends. This event made a huge impact to the kiddos – they made sure they filled in their “sand castle” holes every time we left the beach. They did not want any turtles falling into them – and Eva knows more about turtles than me. Turtle Time is also offered to grown ups at 7pm. I am not sure if they will include the adorable craft – but I am sure it will be as informative – ha! This event is free. If you want to help fund the program you can buy an adorable turtle shirt.
Our week at Holden was amazing. The kids also loved the Dolphin Tour at Calabash. The old fashion candy store at South Port (after our failed visit to the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher because the Ferry was packed!). The Museum of Coastal Carolina at Ocean Isle – and last by not least Pirates Voyage at Myrtle Beach. Holden Beach is so close to these other cities – we were able to have different adventures every day. More info on these later this week..stay tuned!

Oh, The Cuteness Is More Than I Can Bear
I always love when I show up to a newborn session, and there are grandparents there. It’s always great to have extra help those first days at home with a little one. We had so much help the day of their session, which was so awesome. Oh, and have you seen their nursery? So much love and thought went into decorating it – such a special place for this little one. (That I love you more than I can bear print – ADORABLE) I love photographing the nursery because their room can change so much so quickly, and it’s nice to have photos of the room where you rocked them, fed them in the middle of the night, sang bedtime songs, said prayers, changed diapers…read books. One thing I also love about newborn sessions is seeing all the books that have been picked out (So much fun!) And this little one already had tons of books waiting to be read. I also could not get over how sweet the last few images of him looked in black and white. I usually just love color so much, but had to share these.
This little one was just so snug and content with his Mommy and Daddy. He slept and dreamed and just loved being held. I was able to capture such a sweet morning at home for this family. I love, love, love the sweetness of newborn sessions at home. No stress of having to be somewhere or pack things up – just getting ready when you have a newborn is stress enough!

A Few Favorites in July
I am seriously amazed at these. Has anyone tried them? What did you think?
You know I’m not eating bread or sugar right now (hello, whole3o) but I think I’m going to have to make these for the kiddos for next year’s “tide dye tuesday.”
Love all of these great hair ideas for summer.
Holden Beach – of course, a summer favorite.
Who bought the Instant Pot on amazon this week when it was on sale? I bought one of these when it was on sale last time, and I’ll admit I’m still learning it, but a fave this month is definitely nom nom paleo’s live videos + she just posted one about the instapot.
A few things I want to read/tackle this month..
My skin is not so pale as it is in the winter (thank you days at the pool + beach) which I am not a huge fan of the sun + heat, so I am surprised I have even a little bit of a tan, but you know, I do take the kiddos out. Anyways, I need to pick a new foundation – let me know if you have something you love. Also, reading this.
Finding really good tea that I like. I’ve never been a huge la croix fan either but now that I’m a whole30 girl, I’ve been drinking one sometimes. What are your favorite flavors and what are your favorite teas? (without caffeine) And if you are a tea drinker, btw, this thing is awesome.
Just for fun..
A session around this time last year – the sweetest newborn session at home!
A session in July two years ago – love this six month family session with the prettiest light + sweetest family!
Pretty stuff
A favorite summer tank
crushing on this nail polish
