Downtown Raleigh Family Portraits – Rainy Morning Downtown

I was shocked when this family of five arrived to the session EARLY. Now, I love to arrive places early….it is very rare that I am late somewhere. Raleigh traffic and having a second child are both things that have humbled me of this. (Why does it take fifteen minutes to walk from the door to the car after you have the second child? I am still trying to figure this out.) Planning for newborn sessions on weekday mornings with traffic..whew. I really never know what to expect and the early bird in me gets a little stressed out. So, when this sweet family showed up early after getting five people ready, I was impressed! We had a fun morning downtown photographing their sweet family and celebrating their sweet baby girl’s first birthday. The weather was a little confusing. I think we had a little bit of sun, clouds, and rain during the session…but mostly just clouds This mama picked the first image for their artwork to be hung in their home, and I just love the way Mom & Dad are looking at each other! We got so many great photos of this sweet family, but I love how baby was the star of the show!

According to Mom….

Why did you choose this location and what was the weather like the day of your session? We chose it because we loved how pretty and green the park was, with the Raleigh skyline in the background. I had seen the location used for another family session on the blog, and loved the city skyline view! The weather was hot (but not as hot as it could have been, thankfully!), and the day was slightly overcast.

What is your favorite family activity? Being outside together!

Who are the members of your family and a quick fact about each one.

Allison – loves to read
Geoff- avid outdoorsman
Rylan- comedian!
Piper- sweet and sassy
Quinn- she is always smiling

What was your favorite part of the session? I loved that the session was so natural. It was more like we were hanging out together at the park, rather than “posing” for pictures. There was lots of laughs during the session!

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the shoot. I began wardrobe planning with Quinn’s outfit, as she was the birthday girl (turning 1!). I loved her colorful tutu (a gift from grandma), and I knew it would allow me to coordinate outfits using few different colors. I chose blue for our son and myself, bright green for Geoff, and pink for Piper. I love that we are wearing bright, coordinating colors, but not being too “matchy”

What props did you bring and why? We brought a small rocking chair to capture some pics of Quinn sitting in it. Her older sister had her 1 yr portraits taken using the same chair

What are some words of wisdom you have for other families preparing for a family session? Try to stay relaxed and roll with things. For sure, it will not go perfect with kids all the time, so all you can do it keep smiling! Becky always gets great photos no matter what. Our middle daughter began the session tearful and refusing to participate, but you would never know it from looking at all the images Becky captured!

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand? I was worried about 1) getting all of us up, dressed, and fed on time for our early session time (8:00), 2) the weather! There was a major heat wave the week of our session, but thankfully temps were a bit cooler on our day! and 3) that the baby would be happy and easy going for the session. She was! Whew!
